A Crayfish River man will have to pay $800 by December 31 or spend six months in prison for threatening his 83-year-old mother over a disagreement involving a TV program.
McNeal Burton 41, pleaded guilty to the charge of threat before Magistrate Evalina Baptiste Friday morning at the Roseau Magistrate Court.
According to the facts of the case, on May 4 the defendant came home to see his mother (the complainant) watching television. He demanded that his mother change the channel so he could watch cricket and when his mother refused, he said, “I just feel like beating you and burn the house.”
He then proceeded to throw out a table and went on to burn its legs. Burton also wrestled and resisted arrest when the police were called that afternoon.
In handing down the sentence Magistrate Baptiste considered that the defendant had no previous offences in the last ten years, was sickly and did not waste the courts time by pleading guilty.
Burton was also ordered to pay $200 for resisting of arrest.

One thing that person called tiny does just make the most ridiculous comments on DNO eh. u sure u mentally there?
Actually, I think it is quite nice that he is living with his mother at HER age. I live in the Goodwill area and I know so many older persons who are living alone and longing to have someone especially a daughter/son living with them.
His reaction is however greatly over the edge. I hope he can get some counseling and anger management classes. He should also understand that older persons can be quite stubborn when they want a certain thing… he should just have gone to the closest neighbour watching cricket too and told them.. “Mammy watching a show there and she doesn’t want to change the channel. You know those old people already” – and the neighbour would have welcomed him.
Now.. .I don’t know how he going to pay that.. and he maybe still in the same house with his mother. I hope he stays with her too … until she dies….hate to see old people alone.
Zort toe aimer Judge trop. Now all you blaming the old lady. One can only talk when they have walked the road the other person have walked. Stop Judgement sala parce que when all you time come with all you own, then you say something else. Stop judging the old lady like as though you all know everything.
