Dominicans get life sentence in St. Maarten

The men, both Dominicans, being taken to court under heavy police guard. Photo credit: sxmislandtime.com

St. Maarten – The atmosphere in the downstairs courtroom at the courthouse in Philipsburg was heavy on Wednesday morning when Judge M. Keppels returned the heaviest possible sentence against Curtley Allison Richards and Sherwan Roberts: life imprisonment for three robberies that ended in manslaughter (the so-called Regatta-killings), a gang-rape, ill-treatment and several violent robberies.

Richards, 32, and Roberts, 20, entered the courtroom under heavy security from the police arrest team with their hands cuffed in a waist restraint. The two men underwent their sentencing in an apparent state of apathy, and they showed no emotion, anger or frustration at all when their life virtually ended with the life sentence.

it is jaw dropping to see boys that you know do things like this, especially when parents try to keep things together/. Fact is Cain killed his own blood brother, we were born sinners and the devil is always there to prey on our weaknesses , some of us go off the deep end and canot step back out in time.you know what, all it takes is one bad decision. in Dominica i’ll tell you we are very agressive, not so polite and even down right rude starting from the custom officers and to the boys on the block who think it is ok to get money at any cost.but we can be polite when we choose to, its just that we accept that behavior from each other and no one wants to set the standard. Mwe se jean qwatanse. Take a look, everybody is hustling to have property, nice cars and boast of their exploits.Nobdy is their brothers keeper. so what do we really expect? where are the real opportunities? when was the last time you heard adults have some meaningful debate, we basically quarrel and give each other maypwe, and you know what? there have always been potanse mal feteh repah aviolleh in da, we just shame that everybody know our secret. Fact is we are a people to blame there is something we did not do to stop that like it or not. da is still the hardest. Prayer for da and posee.

So sad….What a waste. The devil never said he was going to attack all other countrys and stay away from Dominica. However, I know for sure that prayer works. For those who know how to pray, let’s get busy and pray that God will put a fence around our families, neighbors, friends, and our property. Any nation that forget God is doomed. CHRISTIANS RISE UP AND TAKE DOMINICA BACK.

portsmouth seem to be breeding a lot of criminals, i guess what they see they learn. when you have men in government building those milti billion dollars empire in allu town it seem like it sends the idea to the youth of how allu will get the same so the best thing is rape, kill, steal, crime. crime… and the best thing is people in portsmouth always seem to condone this type of wrong doing, so if there is an air of criminality in the town then satan must make there his headquarters…

As usual we are failing to learn the lesson. I understand perfectly all the anger and rage. This was a grotesque crime and in no way excusable. However, playing the blame game and pointing fingers is not the way to go. As a nation this is quite a sad situation. It is indeed an embarrassment to us all. What have we learned? What led these young men to act out these vicious crimes? How are we going to help our young people? Instead of the mapwi let’s sit and think of the young ones in our homes and communities. I heard you all talk about the devil but what are we doing to protect our children from the devil. Are we raising them to fear God and make him the center of their lives? Dominicans blaming everything and everybody…. We need to STOP and use this situation as a time to reflect and pray. Pray for everyone who is affected directly and indirectly by this tradegy. Jesus came to save all….

I read the full story from the St.Martin news site and to say they were bad is an understatement. Some criminals is best to just eliminate them and ensure they get what they deserve. Now the system must feed and house these dirt bags until they die nonsense. The tax monies should be used for the ones that can be rehabilitated not the creatures that does the devil’s work.Jah knows if it was my peoples they did that too I wouldn’t care,I would go pure wu-tang clan on them.I support the death sentence 100%, to the pro life people go tell the victims family about your views.Governments send their people to kill for their countries every day and it’s fine but if the public wants to kill some sick killers it’s a problem. We live in such a hypocritical society it’s not even funny. To the families of the victims all I can say is lets hope for the best. They get raped, beaten and brutally murdered in prison.

  26. December 16, 2011

I know Curtley. He wasn’t my ‘friend’ but I guess you could say he was my ‘partner.’

One nite (years ago) I went down to this entertainment spot, and when I parked this paro dude rolled up on me and said that I had almost run him over, and if I didn’t give him some money he would smash my windshield.

I wasn’t fierce like I am now, back then. I was standing there wonderin if I should actually pay the paro (he was a well-built paro, ok) a couple bucks and save myself a couple grand on a windshield, when Curtley came around and asked what was goin on?

Paro dude immediately backed off and moved away. I turned to Curtley to thank him and I’ll nvr forget the expression on his face. He looked like a villain in a movie. Not angry but emotionless, like he would have just brutally stabbed paro dude to death without hesitation and not feel any semblance of remorse. Classic sociopath.

Since then I kept my interaction with him to ‘wha go’ ..maybe a tag. When I heard about his exploits in SXM I didn’t feel any surprise. Dude always had it in him.

that’s the kind of men Dominican black women like or are incline to like, in the main, that is. they like the criminals that sell drugs, kill people, act gangster, sag their pants, and bring in the fat blood money so they can buy fake hair to display for their friends therefore making their friends or female enemies get jealous of their low-lifestyle asininity. Having achieve this much sought after accolade, the coveted Dominican female gets back at the ostentatious, stupid, blackminded friend by copulating with there man, or boo as they call it now, and thus they fray and then a consequent brawl ensues.

Where dey from in DA? How long they have been out of Dominica? It might be interesting to do some research on these so-called Dominicans who are arrested and sent to jail for violation of laws in countries such as St. Marten, Guadeloupe, Martinique.
The research should focus on where they originate from, family background single mother home, who raised them Grandmother, aunty etc; did they leave as children or adults, what conditions did they go to socio-economic when they left s kids. This might throw up some interesting information for social policy makers.

    • Hurting
      December 16, 2011

Curtly I do not know but I do know Sherwan, he was single handed raised by his mother who walked the streets of Portsmouth selling breadnut, peanuts roasted plantains just so her children could survive. That mother walked up and down to see that Sherwan remained in college but he did not want that. A family member tried to help him by removing him in DA so that he could work to help his mother and other sibling and look what he went and do. His mother told him that all she wants him to do is work to take care of himself and don’t worry about her, she just wanted him to make a man out of himself. Sherwan had caused his mother alot of pain since his arrest in SM that lady have cried every single day, on buses, at home, on the road anywhere she is and she is speaking about the mess that Sherwan had gotten himself into. What hurts more is whilst in jail before the sentencing Sherwan still had the guts to be calling his mother asking her to send him money, I feel your pains Lina but place your situation in God’s hand and He will give you consolation. Be strong!
