Dominicans urged to adhere to safety rules during carnival

The Dominica Police Force is urging Dominicans to adhere to safety rules to ensure a safe and secure carnival.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Police Superintendent, David Andrew, said that vehicles in Roseau during the two days of street jump should be locked securely.

“Vehicle owners, coming to the revelry, we are asking you to ensure that when you are leaving your vehicle they are properly locked and secured,” he cautioned. “Do not leave any valuables exposed … it can provide an opportunity for would-be thieves; or a temptation for who would not be of a criminal mind but seeing the opportunity and takes it.”

He said electronics should not be exposed in vehicles.

“Don’t leave them exposed, and those important things on your seats that they can be seen,” he stated.

Andrew also addressed homeowners, advising them to refrain from leaving their homes without informing neighbors, as they can be good guards who will send an alert if something is amiss.

“Tell them when you are going to return and tell them in what condition that you are leaving the house,” he stated. “Are you going to leave a window open, are you going to leave a light on, are you going to leave the washing machine working ….so the neighbour can know the usual from the unusual.”

Andrew said homeowners should take necessary steps such as putting keys in safe, secure areas, not underneath mats or flower pots. “The criminals are getting very, very wise, so do not take that chance,” he said.

He pointed out that the police will be taking a robust enforcement approach to criminality.

“A quick response team is going to be there 24 hours and they will be ready to rock and roll, to disrupt and diffuse any possibility or likeness of a breach of the peace,” he stated.

Persons are also urged to avoid walking in isolated areas and limit the use of excessive jewellery and cash.

Meantime, Police Inspector Claude Weekes said the Police will be doing “mopping up” operations of people who disrupt the peace of mind of the citizenry, especially the elderly, after the street jump up is over.

“ I am concerned about our elderly citizens as well, including the Roseau catchment area, where after the carnival has ended that’s when they have their parties, that’s when they are knocking tins, they are doing all kinds of things,” he stated. “I am telling you we will be doing our mop up as well…”

Sound advise as required by the Police Force. Remember the police will not and cannot be every where at the same time, so be the eyes, of the police Force. Safety starts with us. If we leave ourselves open the criminal will break a wood up our #ss. The police will come after the fact, but the damage will already done. Enjoy and have a crime free Carnival to all.

the police should be vigilant , and patrol especially the villages of pt Michel where home invasion is rampant, the police stay in the station , they don’t patrol at nights, watching T.V is there favorite past time until you bring them a complaint, and then they have to scramble for a piece of paper to write your report down, don’t ask me about there follow ups, cus I have never heard, back from them back from them.

“Temptation for who would not be of criminal mind but seeing the opportunity and takes it”? What the F—-.? Unless the thief is 5 years of age or a Jing Bong they are of criminal minds! A person with a good mind and a clean heart wouldn’t even be tempted.

Dominicans please have fun and stay out of trouble. Remember we have tourists in this celebration and we want them to spend their monies, spread the good news to other and come again.

Always be alert, when you are high and drunk, most of the time if something happens to you, you cannot describe what happened or give any description of who did it. Stay safe and hope to see another day. “Blessed are the peace makers.”

You need to take a chill pill this carnival season and let your locks down. Or spend the weekend with a prayer group or some such. Do something, anything legal, to purge that hate and venom from your system.

If by evidence, you are referring to the vehicle in question, you would do well to investigate WHO disposed of it. There’s none so blind as will not see. There’s none so deaf as will not hear.
