Dummy BlackBerry lands Giraudel man in jail

It appears that many Dominicans will do anything to own a BlackBerry phone.

Take Joseph Andrew, of Giraudel, for example.

He appeared in a Roseau court on Thursday after he was accused of stealing a dummy BlackBerry Curve at Depex.

Dummy phones are exact replicas of the real thing  but have no working electronics and are used for display purposes only.

But this was far from Joseph’s mind when he snatched the phone from the business place recently.

He now has six months in the lockup to think of his actions.

Reports are that he went to Depex, saw the dummy phone, snatched it and left with “prized possession.”

The police were contacted and Joseph was seen on Jeffers Lane in Goodwill offering the dummy phone for sale.

At first he denied stealing it saying that he had gotten it in the Botanic Gardens and was going to sell it for $20.00.

But after interrogation he admitted to stealing it because he was “broke.”

“I am sorry for the damaged that I have caused,” a contrite Joseph told the court.

But Magistrate Candia George would hear none of it. “You are not learning your lesson, you can’t seem to see people’s things and cross your eyes,” she told him. “You are a young man … go and work and get what you want legally … your rap sheet is full of offences of theft, theft, theft.”

Meantime, Dennis Pierre is now on bail of $5,000 after he pleaded not guilty to charges of battery of female, resisting arrest, battery on police and obstruction.

He is represented by lawyer David Bruney and the matter is set for hearing for September 5, 2013.

DNO, this is the best laugh of 2013 so far, stealing a dummy Blackberry. They would do anything to get a Blackberry. Little did he know that it was not the real one. I got a good laugh out of this one. Just imagine! What is worst it got him a six-month’s prison sentence. Will this man ever learn a lesson?
This is another one who needs the blessing and grace of God including rehabilitation.
What else can the Court do with these habitual criminals? They are in and out of prison only to re-offend. Since it appears that they may never change and with a long rap sheet, they should be considered a menace to society and incarcerated for a longer time, if not for life. Thieves could prove to be more dangerous people in the future, not only stealing but a hazard to the life of others.

Consider that it could also be due to the uproar of Dominicans, far and wide who comment on especially DNO about the Court System, how lax it is with criminals. Dominicans must let their voices be heard be it through the computer system. Those abroad could also assist. After all, we are all Dominicans and distant should be no problem in this era of the computer age. We are not exonerated from standing up for the truth and speaking up and writing for fairness. God expects that of us. If we still love our country and want what is best for Dominica and nationals and a safe and peaceful place to visit, then it is imperative that we let our views be known, trying to do so respectfully.

What are you stating? You did not use your common sense. It is quite appropriate. It is a replica of the real thing. It gives them an indication of the type of product. When they come in to buy one then they will see the real thing. How often people go window shopping and only look at the items and pass by.
Many stores do that. How about seeing mannequins advertising men and women’s clothing? You ever see a real person advertising them? They look so real as human beings that some people mistake them for humans and talk to them. Have you ever heard of this?
This thief saw that the blackberry looked real. He was tempted and stole it.

8-O WHy? It is true …they did say many…NOT all. That statement just goes with what’s going on in Dca right now.

Eeveryone brokes, but almost everyone- employed or not has how many phones, all kinds of phones..including BB.

I’m not saying that some do not come by it legitimately, however, many of us have heard about Dominica’s young prostitutes…you know..the professional “bum” makers in Dominica.
