Employee pleads guilty to stealing $400 from NCCU

A 24-year-old employee of the National Co-Operative Credit Union (NCCU) Roseau branch, arrested over the weekend for stealing from  that financial institution, has pleaded guilty to the offence.

Nick Nicholas today (March 5, 2012) appeared before chief magistrate Evelina Baptiste where the charge was read to him.

The court heard that he stole EC$400.00 from the account of Catherine Robinson.

The matter was discovered when Robinson, who had $400.29 on her account came in to transact business.

She was told that she did not have sufficient funds in her account.

Robinson however insisted that she had enough money to transact the business she required and requested to see the supervisor.

Before handing down sentence,  Chief Magistrate Baptiste told Nicholas she was very disappointed at what happened.

She said stealing was becoming a “plague or epidemic in Dominica” and action was required to stop it.

“What went into your head…..you have now lost your job and now have a bad police record, you now have to work twice as hard to get another job,” she said.

The Chief Magistrate told the young man she hoped that he had learnt a lesson from his actions.

He was fined EC$1,500.00 and told further that he would have to repay the EC$400.00 that he stole.

Nicholas was represented by attorney at law David Bruney.

common on ppl just saying why all these negative vibes.firstly i don’t know this young man personal but i really don’t think that this dude stole anything from this bank after working all these years from what i read why would he steal only that amount when he deals with cash everyday and for only that small sum the bank had to broadcast this young man like that i believe there’s more to this story than what DNO knows! i believe that this young man was forced and threatened to plead guilty.

ah ha now that kinda makes sense. Ok so it was getting late and he needed to go home . I imagine if he was short you would have stayed till midnight. Even so I’m sure NCCU gives tellers a day or two to look for an outage. Most overs in till are found the same day or two. If that is the case that dude was a delinquent employee and maybe needed to find a different area of work. I mean you can throw a few coins in a cup if it gonna make you above your threshold but pocketing is just silly. I believe this guy used to be out of balance very often and got a few letters so he tried to cover up this time. That’s just sad. These types of jobs are not for everybody, one can always quit and find something suitable. In my opinion these bank jobs are overrated to much long hours, ulcer, sinus and frigging slavery.

what happened was at the end of the day he couldn’t balance off because he had 400 dollars extra and be cause he didn’t want to check to see where the error went wrong he just took the money. he did not go to work intending to steal the money. sad to say but it’s true he was just too lazy to stay at work a bit longer to find out where the error occurred.

aha…that is called stealing, taking what does not belong to you. I’m sorry Nick! sad but true

    • Jayson
      March 6, 2012

That explanation seems very plausible. it happens to a lot of cashiers. They don’t know where they made the error so it’s more problems to figure it out where the issue is than to just ‘pocket’ the money and call it judge.

What I would have done differently, is place the money in an envelope and leave it somewhere on the company premises for at least 12 months in the event the source of the error is revealed within that time period.

Nick,I am honestly sorry that this has happened to you, repent from it, and ask God Almighty to clense you. Then move on. Use that opportnuity to get yourself further educated. I know of a young man who worked at that institution, and was involved along with two other members (male) who wiped out over $30,000. They too lost their jobs, I don’t know about the two others, but one has repented from the act, furthered his education, and now works. Yes. So don’t sit and hang your head in shame, it has happened, You should apologise to the lady, pay her and then move on with your future in a positive way.

This does not make any sense. There seems to be much more to this story than is being reported. It just seems a rather silly reason/amount of money to lose your job for. True. They should just that quietly without going to court.
I am sorry he embarassed himself for $400. He could have just sold something of his; even though it is a laptop. But on a whole, I do not think some youg people budget their money properly. They must not live above their means. I am sorry he has lost his job. The institution should put him to do something where he does not have to handle money be it security or messenger. It might take him a while before he gets a job.
      Then what? drugs!

True say. On this forum DNO is quick to publish names of individuals over petty things.. While one should not support illegal actions/ activities, the further dragging in the mud of fallen individuals is uncalled for. Want to publicize something? Why not talk about the ineffective politicians, police abuse and unproffesional conduct of these officers, the prostituting of our passports, lack of proper treatment for drug addicts and mentally disturbed. Stop saving your hides.

      Dear Domtodebone,

It is so-called friends like you who make folks like Nick believe that if others can do it and get away, then it is JUSTIFIED to do likewise!! There can be no excuse for robbing the finances of clients at which you are employed. Irrespective of how many other persons have committed similar acts, this must be condemned in the strongest possible manner! This is a most heinous crime as far as I am concerned.

Hope you have learnt your lesson though, Nick and do not become a REPEAT OFFENDER, please.

Many people steal and never get caught and then go on to be respectable people in society. Yes it was wrong and he will forever remember the embarrassment so let us not rub it in. He is still young and can become a great person if we will forgive his behavior and allow him to find peace. Some people may not steal but forget that there are 10 other commandments. How many do we keep in honor of obeying the laws of God and state. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.
