Family charged after alleged fracas with police

A total of nine charges have been leveled against a Kings Lane family as a result of an alleged incident between them and police on Wednesday.

Egbert (father), Nola (mother) and Mc Garvin Peters (son) appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste this morning where they pleaded not guilty to majority of the charges.

It is alleged that police officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) came to the defendants home to carry out an arrest on Mc Garvin when a fight ensued.

A number of onlookers were said to have gathered in the said area and witnessed the alleged incident.

The mother, Nola Peters, appeared in court with a bandage to her forehead. She was seen repeatedly applying pressure to her left eye brow area using what appeared to be tissue paper. Mc Garvin also had visible swelling to his face.

Apart from an obstruction charge which Nola pleaded guilty to, all other charges received not guilty pleas. They were; two battery, two assault, two resisting arrest, threats and another obstruction charge. The threats charge was only brought against Mc Garvin while the latter charge of obstruction was brought against Mc Garvin and his mother.

The three were bailed by another one of the defendants’ sons in the sum of $7,500 each. They are to reappear on March 23, 2012 for trial. Conditions of their bail are that they report to the Roseau Police Station every Wednesdays and not interfere with any witnesses in the matter. They are also not to commit any other offense while on bail.

They were unrepresented.

it is so sad when these things happen. there are officers who like beating up on people, but when three people beating up on one man, he must let them kill him? you mean the police is so darft to beat up the young man infront his family? come on people. The young man is a trouble child and whether the police had come and talk nicely he would get on. Sometimes to parents harbor the wrong there children do and still want to be wrong and strong. when send to arrest this troubled children you send men and not the young officers that just came out from training, they will make mense meat of them and trained them how to deal with anger people and how to approach them.

I understand that no one want to be arrested. why is it when a police come to arrest someone they have to do it in such a way to humiliate the person, even hit persons, sometimes even give them bittings that leaves visible markings. But when persons react to what the officers are doing they call it BATTERY ON POICE. What is the name to be given to when a police go beyound the law on someone and bet them sometimes sending them to the hospital or killing them? Look at what happen to those that kill the guy in the carib territory. When for the police to do the real work, they do not. Look at the amount of break ins that are going on around the island. Just remember GOD IS WATCHING YOUR EVERY MOVE, even though you hid and lie about what you are doing to us.

IT sad.No citizen should hit an officer, but no officer should beat up citizen, They allow to put pressure if they refusing an arest. that story strange no hit police and go on bail, this people would have been dead meat. I can’t believe that story. 90% police are always wrony they carry the laws to a different direction.I hope this family walk behind the law. this is a serious matter.Any way let us not judge wrong.

I must say i was present in my office and ran downstairs and witness the whole fracas. The police came to pick up the lady child, she jump on the police and started beating him, then her husband joined in. The two little police officers had their hands full with the lady and her family. I saw for myself what happened and what i can say is that the people were obstructing and beating the police

You`re sure winner, as a true citizen i hope you already gave a written statement to the police as an eye witness and stand ready to show up in court and testifie if needed, during their trial for as we know they are presumed innocent untill proven guilty by our written laws. Ipray you do not change your mind regardless of what comes your way to the contary. Dominica will be a better place with people like you. Thanks in advance and hope there are others like you.

Fighting with an officer often is considered a felony. Often results in time in the pen. The reasonable thing would have been to let the police carry out their arrest and file your complaint or pursue a lawsuit for wrong doing against your son or family. Unless the family has solid evidence this does not bode well for them. Here in lies a moment to reflect on the saying “sometimes you got to take two steps back before you can make one step forward.”

The thing with you people is that you think that all police officers are bad or wicked or evil but when their do they jobs like in the situation above and the people fight them what else they can do but use force. All of you too bias and hypocrite. If it was not for the police who works long hard hours you think Dominica we be as it is today? Go overseas and tell me how you like it. If you go to Sm.martin you know of the amount of killing and how police not doing anything. Antigua is the same to the point that you as a civilian have to walk with your own form of protection. Over this year Antigua police got over 150 different types of guns during a traffic check. Educate your self and don’t act like an @$$ over the world wide web!! Some of you know you are prostitutes for drug dealers and all kind of criminals so you talk for your deadly bread and some just uneducated and want to be noticed. I would send all of you all Jamaica let me see how you all would like it. Bad mind all you bad mind but when the time comes and you meet someone is a badder mind you will see. I will hear about all you. Police are here to protect us yes it have bad ones but not all bad. Are you any bed???

People in Dominica do not respect the law. We must stop interfering when the police is caring out their duties . The parents should be charges of obstucting the course of justice. Only in Da this rubbish happens

If the parent is not happy they should report the officer to the police complains commission (if Dominica) has one.
Dominican police is noted for police brutality.. The officers can be very heavy handed when carring out arrest.

People must also have video evidence when police are to heavy handed on individuals.
None in Dominica should be above the law

And nobody is putting what the police did under question?

Did they have a court order to search the premises?
Did they have a warrant for the son?

I don’t know the people involved but I do know the police service does not have the right to act like that, and if I was them I would be filing a lawsuit.
