Findings of investigation into alleged police assault to be released – police PRO

Inspector Claude Weekes.

The findings of an internal investigation against a police officer accused of assaulting a young woman of Grand Bay could be made public in five to seven days.

According to police spokesman Claude Weekes in an interview this morning, the office of the police commissioner will honour its commitment to the highest degree.

He said no individual, including police officers are above the law and a thorough investigation is underway.

“I’m sure that at the conclusion of the matter something will come out of it,” Weekes said.

He assured that if any merit was attributed to the allegations the officer assigned to the Grand Bay Police Station would be made to answer accordingly.

Weekes said that the Dominica Police Force would not allow its image to be tarnished. He says he understands the public’s notion that “police officers investigating police officers could never yield notable results,” but assures that confidence and trust could be placed in the department.

“The office of the police commissioner has the responsibility to make sure that justice is served,” he said.

Last Friday, Deputy Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette announced that internal investigations against the officer had commenced following a formal complaint made to his office by the female victim.

Carrette said, “The woman has made a report to my office and I’m conducting internal investigations.”

A resident of Grand Bay area described the complainant as a sweet person.

Hi, This is a simple investigation that can be carried out by the Police Department Internal Affairs Bureau or Office of Professional Responsibilities. If an Officer assaults a citizen or a prisoner and the internal investigation finds probable cause to make an arrest then the case be forwarded to the Attorney General/Prosecutor for trial. The best way to gain the public,s confidence is to show that they can conduct an unbias investigation and one that is free of politics. So Mr Weekes please let the chips fall where they may.

I have worked in Grand bay for many years, and I know for a fact that there are a lot of rouges and vagabonds in that village who do not obey the law, therefore, the police must carry out the law accordingly. The people of that village are not supportive of the police, that I know. So Inspector Weekes you need to support the police as best as U can. ( My little 2 sense, be upset as U wish. God bless)

As a sign of maturity as a nation, I think it is time Parliament create an oversight to govern the misconduct of police officers.A Police complaints commission should be establish, an independent body; that body should be able to investigate and recomend to the government what action to take after a thorough investigation of any kind that is brought forward by the public. It must have teeth, arms length away from the Government, and their recomendation must be final.

Mr Weeks,i hope that you are not saying that the officer is culpable of anything even before a hearing… A man is innocent until he is proven guilty.

Folks we all love Mr. Weeks due to his honesty and integrity. Left to me, he would be commissioner and magistrate Benhazin his deputy.

Now, the office of the commissioner is investigating and so Mr. Weeks is only informing us accordingly. He never said that he is the one carrying out the investigations. Obviously, as PRO he will be involved in letting the public know what’s happening but the investigations or its results thereof is not determined by him.

It would be nice for all of us to stop accusing the police and await the results. You and I know quite well that regardless of the outcome of the investigations everyone will not be happy especially if the officer is exonerated. Good job Mr. Weeks and I pray that you will have the courage and fortitude to hang in there because your position at the helm is guaranteed. Man can only hold you down for so long

@Honeyman: I’m glad you know the world is small and that the police officers in canada are watching…you better go and hide because they are coming for your illegal behind. The young lady can come and go as she pleases but can you? Mr. Weeks from what I gather you are a well respected and fair man and I really do hope that the Justice will be served at the end fo the investigation. If my friend was wrong then she better be ready to appoligize not only to the Officer but to the Dominica people. If she is a victim then I hope Mr. Weeks and the powers that be do something about that police officer. We need our policemen and I having known the young lady and friends in the police force would hate for one bad apple to spoil the bunch.

I am very proud of you all<< the police force of dominica for taking a stand off once for all to make the very law enforcers know that they r not above the laws of our own country, Mr Weekes is R very honest police officer from the very first time he got selected and then recruited, So can assure you all that someone for sure will deffinitely face justice. Come un my fellow Dominicans< lets stop the wrong doings and work together as one people to build are beter Dominica for our next coming generation. Simple maters as this one should have never been so huge as how it is right now. This could be delt with more un a professional scale and tp the benafit of both the Police office and the young woman. So, in that case, wheather or not the police officer is wrong then i don't think he should be victimize because everyone makes mistake and remember!! we all are humans and we are not perfect. So please let these two parties reconsile to each other poblicly and move un with our striving country..

only police could investigate police…..it is not like civil or matters…..the force have somting they call a tribunal where they charge and deal with matters which are reported against police so thats not wrong thats the procedure…so dont feel like because is police doin it…it wrong…awa thats how they deal with thier matters that was the system put in place for the force so learn more before we start to just say tings out of the blue u check….i would like the facts of the story when this is made public at least her side and the officer side….let us see how u officers discern ur discretion in making a fairr judgement as to who is right and wrong…. we just want the facts to give us a clear idea of what really happened we dont want to be left hanging around with ideas in our head as to what happen so please be kind enought to give the facts of the circumstances in this matter

  13. August 17, 2010

The police have to do their job we all agree, but we cannot jump to ahead just because every body is calling for the head of this officer let the investigations continue in the end this fine young lady will realized that she will be better served to remain in Canada and continue to be a Nurse rather than wanting to burst a police officer “BALLS” she know she could never get away with her behaviour in Canada. I want to remind this young lady the world is small and news travels quickly our Police officer in Canada will be watching. Good luck.

I LOVE INSPECTOR WEEKS,INFACT I CONSIDER HIM TO BE THE MOST HONEST POLICEMAN IN THE FORCE TODAY,BUT I CANNOT AGREE WITH A POLICEMAN INVESTIGATING ANOTHER POLICEMAN .MR. WEEKS LET US HAVE AN INDEPENDANT PERSON LIKE A REITRED JUDGE FROM OUT OF DOMINICA, THEN I WILL CONSIDER THE INVESTIGATION HONEST.LIKE THE SAYING GOES,WHO IS GUARDING THE GUARD.
