FIU officers search premises of prominent businessman

Some of the officers at the scene

Officers of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) along with Customs and local police spent the major part of the day searching the premises of a well known local businessman in Fond Cole on July 2, 2010.

Several curious onlookers gathered outside the gates of the businessman’s firm as officers of the FIU along with armed police officers conducted the search while others stood guard.

Employees were seen within the compound but it appeared that business had been halted for a major part of the day as lawyers representing the businessman tried to gain access in order to speak to him.

Information reaching Dominica News Online indicates that the search was part of an anti-money laundering operation conducted by the FIU which has so far resulted in two persons being charged and brought before the court, while several others have been detained for questioning.

Reports are that charges may be laid against the businessman.

The Money Laundering Prevention Act Number 20, the related law, was passed in 2000. Parliament also recently passed a Proceeds of Crime Act this year.

As an ex cop, I commend the brave personnel of the CDPF. However, part of what made me leave the force was that my “third” eye had been opened. In every law enforcement org. through out the World, there are well intended, but almost niave officers and agents who have no clue what’s really going on (what the real agenda is). You want to know what’s really going on? Hint: look into pyramidial chain of command.

According to a script from an old movie, “This thing is bigger than Nino Brown. This is big business.”

i commend you my brother, either we get true justice or no justice at all….i literally cry when i see how our people being fooled, i cry for my children when i see my sweet dominica at the mercy of these people. i cry when i see the policemen who swear to protect us, looking at us in hatred and disgust, refusing to look upward and see where true injustice lies… i have done wrong, we all have. but i am older and wiser now and i feel so hopeless and powerless here.

@Jepter: they are protecting DNO from being charged. One needs to understand as much as we might want to believe they not putting out the high ranking indivuduals names it’s really not that. They can only give the names of the persons who were actually charged of the crime the business on the other hand though arrested and questioned were not charged there fore if their names happen to be put out by the DNO … come tomorrow there would be no DNO cause the would charge their azz and you would not be getting the news you are enjoying right now

It’s Amazing how we dominicans suffer from short term memory loss. We never remember the good that people do for us or our relatives, when it’s time to stand firm for Truth & Justice. FYI, when no one was petitioning Tarina’s Cause for Digicel’s rising star, it was this very same businessman who rallied, used all his business’s resources, called in favours from friends, and begged other businessmen to come forward and put together this huge concert in just one day! to ensure that Tarina got the support that she need for the Final Show!!.
His Security company was one of very first to offer benifits, and proper training to it’s officers, He’s company is the same one, that when hurricane season, or when “shit hits the fan ” for most companies in Dominica, everyone wants officers!! they bitch about rates, {which have not be raised in the 11 years of business} but they dont want to give this man the respect he deserves for being there when no one else is! Most of the other companies out there today are ex-employees who after receiving all the training and money invested in them by this employer. They felt the best way to repay him is by starting their own. The sad thing about it is that even now , after they’ve done the jobs, stolen clients, their quality of work is poor, and their customers are coming back to the original for quality service!! any fool can stand guard, it takes training and decipline to become a security officer!
Right now Dominicans are bending over backwards to condemn this man for something that they are not even sure of. There has been no charges brought against this man. yet we Dominican have already tried and past judgement on him! We dominicans are always ready to accept the worst of our fellow men, for basic reasons like Jealousy, Greed, Envy, hatred to name a few. we never see when this man works beyound the regular hours just to make a dollar to survive and to keep his employees with food on their tables and roofs over their heads! Just because his surname is the same as the others does not mean that he was born “King”{ according to some of you} and giving everything for free! he had bills and taxes to pay like everyone else!!
Our Police force/ CID heart is in the right place , but their direction is wrong! they spend so much time chasing thier own tails, that the fail to see what is right in front of them!! they are so obsessed with bringing down a hard working man, who has done nothing wrong to them or the public personally or other wise, that they will exhaust all resources just to try and embarass and humiliate this man so they can satisfy their pet peeves!! Why aren’t they focusing within their organisation? there is so much shit to clean up there, that it would take forever and a day! if they are truely determined to eradicate Money laundering and Drugs they should start with the Drugs Squad officers, the patrolling officers, Immigration unit to name a few. Why is it that whenever valid complaints are logged during Inspector week’s Programe, “Police on the Beat” that he can never answer, and these issues just brushed aside? We see the drug unit makeing raids and confiscating Drugs, yet when it’s time for the case to be called, they cant find the evidence anymore!! We see prison offiers using these convicted drug dealers to push drugs for them within the prison, yet nothing is being done about that!
There are so many other more pressing issues to be delt with within this country, like the infestation of chiness and Haitian nationals. Every other building on King George V street, Great George street, Kennedy Avenue and so many more street, is a chinese store, prettty soon we will be renaming the capital city from Roseau to “China Town”. They pay no VAT and they don’t give receipts among other things. Yet we are turning a blind eye to that and focusing on tarnishing a good man’s name simply because, we do not understand how in this hard and economic times, he is making ends meet. We dominican fear what we don’t understand. if someone not crying to all dog and cat, they have money, if you purchase a new ride,{ they don’t car if is the bank that own it} you dealing drugs, if you build a house,{ don’t care how long u work and save up for it, and still have to take loan to build it} is drugs! it’s obvious that to Dominican’s there’s no such thing as hard work, anymore, they never record your hardships, struggles, or difficulties that u encounter before u get to the level that you are presently, all they see is the end result and jump to their own assesments!

Word to the wise,”The Heights by great men reached and kept, were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept were toiling upwards thru the night!”

DNO, i do not live on the island, for that matter, i have been away for quite a number of years. you are my only means of knowing what’s taking place on the island. the picture sure looks like a boat that i know rather very well. By withholding the name of this individual who i strongly suspect to have a brother who is in the catering business, what exactly are you protecting? Is it not a fact the the man’s premises was visited by law enforcement officers? By making mention of the man or his firm’s name, i do not see any harm being done, as your story or reporting will only be based on facts.

I hope they start and the top with their housekeeping. Who received a couple hundred thousand dollars fro creole festival last year? Where/whom did the money come from?

I hope with the assistance of external forces, our FIU has the fortitude to tackle the real men running this show. Watch out for the Venezuelans, diplomatic cover, protections. Somebody up high must be instrumental in providing so much cover.

Do we have what it takes too eradicate them too… Maybe not, and then we become another little scamming, scheming, corrupt country, peddling drugs and prostitution, money laundering with one set rising to the top while others are dredging the bottom ot the barrel

Come on REDs, lets take it to the next level. You’d think that is a country where, everything is “so great” we would not have such levels of criminal activity ongoing, but that’s the truth, so something is wrong with this party.

    Anyways, …Time will tell…..

@Blank: AM BLANK TOO, I GUESS I MISSED THE NEWS EARLIER. Well corruption has to be erradicated in our unspoilt land so the clean up got to stand somewhere. GENERALLY I FIND WE DOMINICANS HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THE LAWS OF THE LAND AND 2) THERE IS A GENERAL FEAR OR RELUCTANCE TO IMPLEMENT THE LAWS. TELL ME HOW DO YOU THINK RICH COUNTRIES REMAIN RICH? THEY IMPLEMENT LAWS AND SEIZE PROPERTIES ON THE STATE BEHALF. WE MUST FIRM UP AND DO WHAT WE GOT TO DO.

@holahola: You sound like you’re singing for your supper. By the way please do us all a favor and take your time to type properly so we won’t have to read your post so many times to understand what you’re saying. The police behaves like that with everyone when conducting searches, so I don’t see the need for giving him any special treatment. You talk about underaged children being present, well it’s not like the police officers were holding a gun to the gentleman’s head, or being physical with him. It’s double standards individuals like you who prevent progress in the country, talking about politicians. If you knew anything about life or if you had any common sense, you would know that when it comes to certain things you have sto start from the bottom and work your way to the top, so the politician’s turn will come. The fact that a politician is corrupt is no excuse for the rest of society to behave like him. People think it’s alright to do bad things just because somebody else is doing it, but why won’t we apply the same reasoning when it comes to doing the right thing?

Come off it people, no one is saying don’t go after drug dealers and law breakers, I say throw their butts in jail, its our bros n sis lives they are destroying. But the police and the law enforcement need to stop wasting our hard earned tax payers money on humiliating hard working citizens like our so called big surname business man. The man has worked hard regardless of his family name, he employs many persons, pays his taxes and at least worths a %#( on the earth, DO YOU? But all Dominican want is to see him fall for reasons they themselves don’t even know. Ppl stop being groupies, learn to form you own opinions, don’t dislike someone bcuz ppl say u should, ask yourself what has this man ever done to you personally, and the answer will be NOTHING, but maybe he has employed your relative or friend, maybe he has done something good for someone you know, use the good in ppl to elevate them, and stop dwelling on the negative. This is just the police doing their jobs, which we applaud them for, do they use discretion and tact NO, but not all of us were blessed with that gift. In the end you will be happy to hear that the business man will not be charged or arrested, contrary to the rumors that he was, just bcuz someone is questioned or investigated does not mean they r under arrest even if they are taken to the police station ppl, empower n educate yourselves and stop spreading ridiculous rumors like wild fire. I am willing to bet that he is not involved in any wrong doing but is merely under suspicion simply by association. The lesson here is to make wise decisions as each one has consequences, don’t glory in other peoples misfortune, yours may be around the corner.

If memory serves me right, in science class at SMA I learnt that an ELEMENT comprises of atoms and ultimately will form part of a compound.

While we investigate the ELEMENT we must never forget the Atoms that are involved and hence the compound which comprises everything. In other words, there are little and VERY BIG Fishes involved in this one. I smell a lot of rats will get caught up in this investigation which is good for our country. Clean out the corruption before its too late. The names myself hear calling is troubling to say the least so I hope the IPO Commission will take heed and do their work in support of the police.

I applaud the investigating officers for having the testicular fortitude in defying popular beliefs and doing the job they were sworn to do. Regardless of the outcome (the case may disappear due to interference) you guys should be promoted because you have at least shown your readiness to uphold the laws of the land even when the so called GWO-BOUG are involved. Good job Mr. Commissioner. Now bring on the commission of inquiry to clean from within.

Only this year this Act was passed. This should have been in place decades ago. No wonder these Drug King Pings flurishing in Da like that. Da is their safe haven. They say better late than never but i find this one extreemly late. The power that be need to find the resourses to double the size of the police Dept. to match up to the increase in criminal activity which comes with development. The strength of the police force is the same as it was 20 years ago. The govt. need to clamp down on the surge of Drugs and guns that is taking over the nation slowly but surely. We need to act and act now to avert a repeat of wat happened in Jamaica last month form happen in Da. I see all the signs looming on the horizin. IF we don’t take a stand and insist that our govt. take action our children and grand children will be left to count the cost. This is a warning to all law abiding citizens just don’t stand idle by and allow things to happen. Lobby the powers that be and insist that they take action against these criminal elements thats taking over this island for our sake and for the sake of our children. Thank you.
