Five admitted to bar

The new lawyers from left Fernillia Felix, Vincia Auguiste, Saeed Trotter, Jo-Anne Cuffy and Saudia Cyrus

Five persons were on November 2 admitted by Justice Bernie Stephenson to practice as barristers and solicitors in Dominica.

The five, four women and one man, took their oaths before family and friends to “uphold” the ethics of the “noble profession.”

They are former school teacher, Jo-Anne Xavier Cuffy the wife of Val Cuffy, Vincia Auguiste from the Kalinago Territory, Fernillia Felix of Pointe Michel, Saeed Trotter and Saudia Cyrus.

In admitting them, Justice Stephenson cautioned about the profession and work ethics. “You need to come ready and prepared and always come with your notes,” she said.

She told them that this was just the beginning of their career and “you have many years ahead of you to practice and instead of seeking for pleasures and riches be sober and vigilant in your careers.”

They all promised to be true to their oaths and hold the dignity of the profession.

Congratulations to all of these young people. Lawyers have been taking a lot of blows but Saeed said it best. A good lawyer must first be a good person. A person doesn’t enter the legal profession and instantly become a good and honourable person. A person who enters the legal profession is only as good as the person he was just before he or she entered the profession. Many persons have unreasonable expectations of lawyers. Remember, if you want to find a lawyer with integrity look first for the good person who became a lawyer. Again, congratulations to these young people. As they enter the profession I hope that they keep God right next to them every step of the way.

Congratulations to all, I would like to see some new areas graduating in the area of neurology, cardilogy, oncology, sociology, nutrition social behaviour etc over the next ten years to handle the many cases that over-whelm our health sector. I am too old now to go into those areas, did not have the opportunity that the young people have now, so I am toiling the soil and providing the food, this is where I have my Phd. but thank God I can read and write now, and can even use the computer that’s as far as I am. So please the aforementioned fields need a few. The market is becoming saturated with lawyers just defending criminals and have them escape with murder, wait and see what will happen to the person(s)who bruttally assaulted the 70 year old lady from Giraudel. Everyone said she worked hard for whatever she achieved and yet someone thought the best thing to do was to kill her mercilessly to take it from her. I am warning anyone who tries that at my home the police will come and pick the body because they will not have the first chance on me. This nonsense must stop now!!!. Good Luck to the new Lawyers.

I commensd and welcome these noble Honourable gentlemen to do service to Dominica and Dominicans. Justice Stephenson comments is right and appropriate and I quote her:
“you have many years ahead of you to practice and instead of seeking for pleasures and riches be sober and vigilant in your careers.”
Please remember that in every profession there are rotten eggs ansd likely to corrupt the entire bs=askets….please the watchdogs of your profession and protect it highly and service with honour…..God bless you all…
