Former NBD employee, charged with forgery, gets $50,000 bail

Affordable-Bail-BondsMatthew Peter Burton, of Warner, has received bail in the sum $50,000 after his parents swore to comply with special terms and conditions mandated by the court.

Burton, who is a former employee of the National Bank of Dominica (NBD), was charged with two counts of forgery, and was not required to plea when he appeared in court on Friday, because the alleged offense is an indictable one.

He was charged with forging NBD saving withdrawal slips in the amount of EC$ 3,000 on September 23 and EC$ 7,000 on October 3.

When bail was brought up by the defense attorney, Heather Felix—Evans, it was first objected to by Prosecutor Sergeant Innocent Toussaint who argued that the accused could leave island and may not appear for trial.

He also said that two weeks were needed for further investigations. The Magistrate then agreed to grant Warner bail with special conditions, which include reporting to the Mahaut Police station between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm, five days a week.

He is also prohibited from making contact with the prosecution’s witnesses.

The trial date has been set for March 27, 2014.

Burton’s parents, who stood as surety, are expected to be responsible for him and were cautioned that they must ensure that he stays in line as failure to do so resulting in any breach of the bail conditions would result in them paying the $50,000 or going to jail.

    To Admin:
The young man’s last name is Burton from Warner, so why would the judge grant bail to Warner. The community is not on trial. The judge granted bail to Burton not Warner.

    Admin: already corrected thank you.

Nonesense! What do you then say for the so called developed countries where people still commit these crimes? No one should make excuses for stealing or crime in general. Maybe you should make an excuse for politicians to steal the tax payers money because things hard.

very good point. i believe that rules are for the rich, poor, fortunate and unfortunate alike. when we as a community decide and agree to rules it should work and be the same for us all.

Such stupid excuse. Nonsensical talk. “de economy is dead what you expect..”

This man had a good job. He was better off than most, and “de economy is dead” for all of us all over the world.

From the time I know myself calypsonians have been singing about the bad economy: “I have something on y mind, the dollars too hard to find” remember?
And why de blasted milk so dear. No, Doctor, No!” Remember?
“De prices too high – too high. People can’t afford to buy – to buy. No clothes, no food cause no money.” Remember?

The money NEVER enough but 99.9% of the world’s population manage to survive on a poor purse from the time money was invented. My old parents use to say “doh mek you eyes burn you on other people’s things.” That is the lesson we have to remember.

The young man had a good paying Job and the salaries would increase every year. We must be content and pray to God for what we need. The word of God says be anxious for nothing but thru pray and supplication let our request be made known to Him(God). Dominicans must stop these non-sense comments about who do dis and who do dat.

They give ordinary people so much trouble to get a loan, and show off on poor people children asking for the devil’s horn to surety a loan. They frustrate you, keep your stuff for how long, and in the end say “denied”; then they are stealing people money. My God, what a life.

I blame former headboy of DGS Roosevelt skerrit from vielle case. What u expect young people to do when they see what u doing and getting away with it?
You should be an example to young people instead u dissapoint them, do the right thing and give back ill gains to the poor, lead by example, before more of our young people continue on your path.

I have suffered unauthorized use of my debit and credit card, my friends have also complained of this dilemma. When this cards are shipped bank employees loosely place them in FEDEX envelopes, with ought the cards being machine sealed. THIS SIMPLY MEAN THAT BANKERS COULD HAVE HAD ACCESS TO OUR CREDIT AND DEBIT CARD INFO.

    December 22, 2013

Those who are stealing from the state, and have stolen from the state, because of their position, need to have their day in court as well. A country or institution cannot enjoy true prosperity when those in charge of steering the ship are grossly dishonest.
A fundamental contributing factor for the poor state of Dominica today is dishonesty and greediness.
