Grand Bay man reprimanded; attorney says he acted as a ‘good samaritan’

Augustus Liverpool of Grand Bay, who disconnected the wires to a system during an address by Parliamentary representative for the area Justina Charles at a public meeting in that community, was reprimanded by a Roseau magistrate today.

Liverpool pleaded guilty to two charges relating to his obstruction and prevention of a public meeting by disconnecting the wires to the speakers.

The facts of the case states that Liverpool had also shouted profanities during and after the disconnection.

The incident occurred on February 5, 2012 at the opening of Grand Bay’s carnival. Liverpool was dressed in a sensay costume with no mask on at the time.

According to the details of the case, Liverpool told police that he was angry at the organisors of the event because they did not provided his youth sensay band members with the water they promised.

His lawyer, Ronald Charles, during mitigation said that his client’s intentions were good as he was only attempting to get the organisors to provide his band with water. He said that his 43-year-old client should be considered as a good Samaritan as he did all in his power to ensure that his band was well taken care of.

Charles asked the court not to impose a custodial sentence on his client and pleaded for leniency.

Before passing sentence, magistrate Candia George told the defendant to consider consequences before he acts.

“You seem to be very repentant,” she stated.

few years back it was that same woman that had tears in her eyes free liverpool now she sending that same cousin to jail. instead of giving the families of the late mouse, alvin, migel, etc. justice to these unsolved murders in grandbay and these killers are still on the street of grandbay instead of sending ppl to jail for unplugging a mic.

This guy is just a troublemaker. The magistrate should have gone through his criminal record and see why he went to prison a few years ago. He should still be inside there so he could make some reflection, his stay was too short. Grandbay people are too hypocrite, they are behaving as if he is a saint, stay in all you mess that’s what you all like.

The magistrate should find out whether he has a criminal record related to carnival. If he had any previous incident relateted to carnival I would reccomend councelling in anger management in addition to report to the prison every Friday before the opening of carnival until Ash Wednesday for at least the next 3 to five years. We need to set the example with Trouble makers during the carnival season in Dominica.

It is sad that we find time to encourage devient behaviours in our society. I suppose it would also be quite fine for him to have set fire to the stage too so that he could get his water for his band? Maybe it would also be fine for him to go rub a supermarket because he needs to feed his family or something like that…let’s stop making excuses for people who choose to break the laws…whether we consider their acts as trivial..it is such behaviors, if left uncorrected and untamed, will transfoem to much bigger crimes.

when you fall off the edge they always say you BAD, tony montana “the bad guy” all the time we politely try to get their attention, all we are is ignored….but let JUST ONE politician catch a bullet or get kidnapped and we will see how fast the rest will start to point fingers and dayparley about all the purposeful deceit going on…..such is the case when peoples lives are taken for granted by those whose bread is well buttered.

It’s only a mike, just give de man a warning. Only Justina’s feelings that were hurt. When Groovers had a big blocko show in Roseau for DBS, mega crowd on de street, a fella stop de show on stage fighting, no arrest….Oh yeh, same ting.

If she so hurt the Grandbay people are more hurt by weak representation. Where are the projects other ministers are getting because they threaten not to behave? Where’s the Call center? Where’s the medical school? Oh sorry….the Grandbay people are more deserving of a big ole 3 million dollar jail instead.

I am not condoning pulling a mike cord when a minister speaks. Carnival organizers have done the same to Sakis and Montin band. Having them play on the streets and not providing basics like water or anything in hot sun, and the organizers are nowhere in sight.

The man felt insulted on behalf of his crew of Sensay that made the opening look more authentic than anything else, so he snapped momentarily, and he should have known better. Agustus has been well behaved, that’s a minor ting…. de same judge that sends hardened criminals home, slap on wrist(except marijuana users)…just gi de man a warning and move on. Like I said earlier, only de minister’s feelings dat were hurt! But he stopped a nice sewo eh:cry:

Of course,, what Augustus did was not right but if this court action was designed to engender sympathy for Ma Charles it was also short-sighted. Magnanimity would have nurtured more support for her in this case.
