Grand Bay woman gets lucky break at court

One Grand Bay woman held in contempt of court earlier Tuesday can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Annie Dowe had earlier been detained and placed in a cell at the courthouse.

The Grandbay woman came to court to assist in the bail of a family member.

However she got angry after he was refused bail because his surety did not meet the  conditions.

A very annoyed Dowe proceeded to storm out of the courtroom, uttering some unpleasant comments.

This prompted Magistrate Ossie Lewis to order her arrested.

She was brought to court about half an hour later and asked if she had ever been to court before.

Dowe told the magistrate that she hadn’t.

“Sir, I am sorry….and won’t let this happen to me again,”she told the court.

She was then informed that court was “a serious matter.”

“I won’t impose a custodial sentence or fine on you, but people must know that they can’t come to court and behave in such a manner, I won’t tolerate this in my court, take this as a warning to you and others,” magistrate Lewis told Dowe.

He also informed her that she could have been jailed for seven days for being in contempt of court.

He then reprimanded and discharged her.

In Court of all, the following should apply: “Speak when you are spoken to. Answer when you are called.”
Strange that this thought crossed my mind. No, it was never said to me but I heard about the statement. It must have originated from a Dominican elderly disciplinarian in those days when I was a child.

the rage she displayed in court, she should use it in her strictness in raising her son so he would not fall on the wayside. she just prove to the court why her child has bad behaviour. Like mother Like son.

I have to disagree with you on a level. We do our best to raise our kids but at some point they make up their own minds and decided to do or say the wrong things. You can’t always blame the parents for the kids mistakes.

The woman should at least have some common sense to know that she is in Court and not outdoors and to conduct herself accordingly. Does she not know those words, “Order in Court?”
She was extremely fortunate that she was not arrested. If she were in a big country she would not be exonerated and would take some jail time or pay a fine for contempt of Court.

Then again morals and discipline has gone down the drain because of the way some of our parents behave..just take a good look at the kids behaviour these days..can you remember the days gone bye, when kids had respect and discipline was the order of the day.it’s really sad to see how it is today..where are the times we enjoyed each others company and fighting was excitement. It’s a shame to see the behaviour of our seniors today..shame aloud..

Lee it’s people like you who make bad parents. When someone breaks the law they know there is something to pay .I like the magistrate’s decision we need to enforce the laws they are there for a reason not for good looks

This is why it is said: “Order in the Court and all stand” when the judge or magistrate come in to Court. Is this not done in Dominica?
There is a price to pay for contempt of Court. Whatever her feelings, she should have kept her mouth shut. Some people appear not to know better. She was fortunate Magistrate Lewis exercised leniency towards her.
Magistrate Lewis and other magistrates, if this occurs in the future, arrest the perpetrators, jail them and make them pay a fine. They must learn respect and practice it when in Court and towards Judges and Magistrates. May no one object to this.

I believe the Judge did give her a break…I guess you were not reading or understanding what you are reading…
The law is what it is. You don’t disrespect the Court and Judge and exspect a slap on the wrist!
Magistrate Lewis is alright in my book, if it was another Judge, she would’ve been serving her seven days..””
“”He then reprimanded and discharged her””.So she did get her freaking break.

      @ Lee

Encouraging lack of discipline and disrespect? Consider if everyone were do act as she did what type of Courtroom it would be? As the saying goes, she got off scott free. It appears to me that you too are in dire need of discipline and respect for others especially authority.
