One Grand Bay woman held in contempt of court earlier Tuesday can now breathe a sigh of relief.
Annie Dowe had earlier been detained and placed in a cell at the courthouse.
The Grandbay woman came to court to assist in the bail of a family member.
However she got angry after he was refused bail because his surety did not meet the conditions.
A very annoyed Dowe proceeded to storm out of the courtroom, uttering some unpleasant comments.
This prompted Magistrate Ossie Lewis to order her arrested.
She was brought to court about half an hour later and asked if she had ever been to court before.
Dowe told the magistrate that she hadn’t.
“Sir, I am sorry….and won’t let this happen to me again,”she told the court.
She was then informed that court was “a serious matter.”
“I won’t impose a custodial sentence or fine on you, but people must know that they can’t come to court and behave in such a manner, I won’t tolerate this in my court, take this as a warning to you and others,” magistrate Lewis told Dowe.
He also informed her that she could have been jailed for seven days for being in contempt of court.
He then reprimanded and discharged her.
In Court of all, the following should apply: “Speak when you are spoken to. Answer when you are called.”
Strange that this thought crossed my mind. No, it was never said to me but I heard about the statement. It must have originated from a Dominican elderly disciplinarian in those days when I was a child.
the rage she displayed in court, she should use it in her strictness in raising her son so he would not fall on the wayside. she just prove to the court why her child has bad behaviour. Like mother Like son.
I have to disagree with you on a level. We do our best to raise our kids but at some point they make up their own minds and decided to do or say the wrong things. You can’t always blame the parents for the kids mistakes.
i WANT 2 SHAKE UR BIG TOE..AGREE WITH U 100000%
the police out dere selling guns that criminals can use to commit serious crimes with…he get bail, and the poor young man no bail so what u expect the mother to do.you should the police get bail im sure he gonna run.”watch”
@ i want to come home
The woman should at least have some common sense to know that she is in Court and not outdoors and to conduct herself accordingly. Does she not know those words, “Order in Court?”
She was extremely fortunate that she was not arrested. If she were in a big country she would not be exonerated and would take some jail time or pay a fine for contempt of Court.
Wow. This is a good lesson for others.
Then again morals and discipline has gone down the drain because of the way some of our parents behave..just take a good look at the kids behaviour these days..can you remember the days gone bye, when kids had respect and discipline was the order of the day.it’s really sad to see how it is today..where are the times we enjoyed each others company and fighting was excitement. It’s a shame to see the behaviour of our seniors today..shame aloud..
Lee it’s people like you who make bad parents. When someone breaks the law they know there is something to pay .I like the magistrate’s decision we need to enforce the laws they are there for a reason not for good looks
she said good bye to the cop in the cell
If she can behave so, what do you expect her “blood” to do.
AND WE ARE WONDERING WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR CHILDREN,CHILDREN LIVE WHAT THEY LEARN, PARENTS ARE THEIR FIRST TEACHER, WHAT THEY LEARN AT HOME, THAT’S WHAT THEY EXPRESS AT SCHOOL OR ON THE STREETS, SO BE AN EXAMPLE TO THEM.TEACH THEM RESPECT!
I wonder where you people get your information from. Who died and made you experts. What that lady did was wrong but do you know how many kids out there doing bad know darn well their parents taught them better?
lee you sound like a foul.
This is why it is said: “Order in the Court and all stand” when the judge or magistrate come in to Court. Is this not done in Dominica?
There is a price to pay for contempt of Court. Whatever her feelings, she should have kept her mouth shut. Some people appear not to know better. She was fortunate Magistrate Lewis exercised leniency towards her.
Magistrate Lewis and other magistrates, if this occurs in the future, arrest the perpetrators, jail them and make them pay a fine. They must learn respect and practice it when in Court and towards Judges and Magistrates. May no one object to this.
she should learn to keep a cool head .
and for what nah? her son threaten the principal of the school, neither she or her son yet to apologize but she upset he not getting bail, these young kids to restless for my liking and parents like her allowing them to act so when they know their parents willing to go hell and back to pay for their sins.
GIVE D WOMAN A BREAK………
I believe the Judge did give her a break…I guess you were not reading or understanding what you are reading…
The law is what it is. You don’t disrespect the Court and Judge and exspect a slap on the wrist!
Magistrate Lewis is alright in my book, if it was another Judge, she would’ve been serving her seven days..””
“”He then reprimanded and discharged her””.So she did get her freaking break.
He’s referring to you the readers who can do so much better than her.
you sure right , go easy on the woman ,ayo got more serious crime than that,,, only the poor man ah feel it !!!!
@ Lee
Encouraging lack of discipline and disrespect? Consider if everyone were do act as she did what type of Courtroom it would be? As the saying goes, she got off scott free. It appears to me that you too are in dire need of discipline and respect for others especially authority.
