Gyptian involved in deadly argument

Gyptian

Gyptian, one of the artistes slated to perform at the upcoming World Creole Music Festival, has been reportedly involved in an argument during which shots were fired leaving one man dead.

According to the Jamaica Observer newspaper the incident occurred on Monday night at Steven ‘Supa Hype’ Davis’ studio in Kingston, Jamaica when an argument developed between Gyptian and producer DJ Frass.

According to the Observer the two were engaged in an argument over a song Gyptian had voiced on one of Frass’ “riddim” while at the studio.

The argument became heated and DJ Frass left the studio and returned some minutes later with about six men, according to the Observer.

The Observer reported that Frass ‘draped’ Gyptian and a member of his entourage made a move towards the singer.

It was then someone allegedly pulled a gun, probably one of Gyptian’s friends who thought the singer was going to be attacked, an alleged eyewitness told the Observer. The Observer reported that the alleged eyewitness said the first attempt to pull the trigger failed as the gun stuck but two shots were eventually fired, hitting one man.

The official report given by the Jamaican police said that Davion Bailey was killed by unknown assailants who entered the studio and opened fire hitting him several times. The police said the men then escaped in a white Honda motorcar. Bailey was pronounced dead at hospital.

Among Gyptian’s better known releases are Hold You, Serious Times, Mama Don’t Cry and Nah Let Go.

It is not known whether this incident will affect Gyptian’s attendance and performance at the creole festival.

why is that so many of u people have such negative vibes towards you island and it culture SHAME on you people i thnk the festival is a great way letting the outside world know about the island.having a foreign band or artist performing at the festival why should it be a problem from what i understand it is called WORLD creole music festival i see it as a great way of letting people come together in unity to celebrate on this big event so instead of complaining why not come together put your ideas with theirs and try make it a top of the line event.

It’s sickening to hear Dominicans post comments about Creole Festival being about Creole Music! Creole means a mix of everything and if there was only Creole music playing, there would not be a Creole Festival because people would not pay to come see the same thing over and over every year! We go to hear different music, see different performances, mingle and interact with friends and family that come down every year. It’s a socializing event, it’s to allow people to listen to the different genres of music out there! So please, stop talking like Creole Festival is only for the Creole Music you all mention; it’s a mix of EVERYTHING!!!

The name of the festival should be changed to reflect the type of stars invited. Because ‘Creole’ is merely used as a cover

the question is what was the original intension of the creole festival, i thought it was to promote kadans or french related music where does reggae fit in there i do not see kadans bands going to sunsplash in jamaica,we keep living in the shadows of these so called big countries to much i hate that, for heaven sake we are an independent country which need to make independent decisions.

You are so right. I went to the creole music festival for the first 4 years….that was creole music festival. now it is a music festival without the creole.

  15. September 14, 2011

the man wasnt directly involve we dominicans like to say what we want and nothing wrong with him coming to perform at the festival, without reggae artist at the festival we will lose attendance, they should even have more jamaican artist cause they attract people to come especially the young people which is the majority that go to the festival

Its always sad to read of a pointless death.

My choice of music is Reggae and I’ve got a few of Gyptian’s CD’s. If his music glorified violence/slackness then I certainly wouldn’t listen to him.

Some say that Reggae should not be part of the WCMF, I’m asking them why not. The name Creole is used to describe descendants of European or Negro settlers in the West Indies. So ALL music from the West Indies should be part of the WCMF.

For those who are saying that there are too many reggae acts at the WCMF, are you also trying to assert that we would attract similar crowds without these artists/bands? Will a lineup containing only creole performers fill the stands like Morgan Heritage or Jah Cure?

he should not be allowed to play period. we need to portray positivity in Dominica and bringing in an artist that has a direct or indirect involvement in crime is definitely sending out the wrong signals

Wow, so your comment means that there will be many artists (be they singer/song writers, actors etc.) who would never leave their country of birth, as there are many indirectly involved in wrong doings.

If they are directly involved, then they should be locked up.

Piper, the saint, I hope this talk is also being thrown for the Dominicans who haven’t learn to resolve an issue without resorting to violence too. Probably Jamaica is the only island where people get murdered. Dominica’s crime rate is zero. Congrats!

Don’t get too defensive about people who carry guns and shooting people over an argument. This was not an indictment of Jamaican people. Nowhere in my comment did you see me mention anything about his nationality.

I thought this festival was based on francofonie and creole music based on our frence and creole culture and connections. they have lmismanaged it so badly that itis now based on the money that can be made and of couse who can push hand in the cookie jar. Tell me whan last if ever midnight groovers or kassav played at a soca festival in Trinidad or a reggae song splash in Jamaica? So how comes the festival people are not wise enought to revisit our annual calendar and see if they can come up with a caribbean different musics festival so there we will have soca reggae booyon and other carribean music or annually invite a few reggae artists plus local reggae artists and have a festival.WHAT THAT HURST ME MORE IS THAT THEY BROUGHT OUR OWN NASIO FONTAINE ONCE IN 15 YEARS WHAT A SHAME.Every year now is reggae and soca. Anyway thanks to lime for taking the lead in bringing Nasio at creol in the park.FINALLY CHANGE THE NAME OF THIS FESTIVAL OR GET OTHER FESTIVALS TO AUGMENT CREOL MUSIC FESTIVAL AND HAVE THESE FESTIVALS SOME OTHER TIME IN THE YEAR IF IS ACTION SEWO OR MONEY THE FESTIVAL PEOPLE INTERESTED IN AND STOP INSULTING OUR CREOL HERITAGE. WHY DON T THEY NEGOCIATE WITH THE OTHER FESTIVALS IN jAMAICA and TRINIDAD to invite groovers and other Dominican bands to these festivaln?
