Heavy fine for wounding

court newsGoodwill resident, Andy Alexander Cassell, is now facing a huge fine of $37,500 after he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.

The fine was slapped on him when he appeared in court on Monday.

$30,000 of the fine will go towards compensation to the victim, Brent Blaize.

Cassell has until March 25 to pay the compensation package or he will spend nine months in jail.

The remaining $7,500 has to be paid in six months or Cassell will be sent to jail for two years.

In mitigating attorney, David Bruney, said his client has had a turn around in his life shows “remorse” and wants to walk the “straight and narrow path of the law.”

But his plea fell on deaf ears and the fines were imposed.

Ain’t nobody paying fines, the first thing these young guys say is ”I just doin you something and go Stocky and sit down!” What a joke our justice system is when people know before hand that their actions will remain unchecked.

Andy we went to Primary School together, but no longer talk. we pass each other straight on the road like we are enemies, we had no problems. saw you pleaded guilty, that’s good in taking responsibility for your actions, do what you have to do to pay your fine and move on. Ask God for forgiveness and stay close to him because the devil is a lair .

The average person makes $20,000,00 a year in Dominica. Why would I pay $30,000.00 when I only have to do 9 months in jail. No justice in Dominica

      March 25, 2013

I would really like to know what is the rational or benchmark they use to come up with those fines and confines. $30000- 9 months jail but for $7500, 3 yrs jail!!!! I am not legally minded but this does not seem to me as a proper administration of justice.

He ought to use his common sense. I for sure would check-in in stocky and eat red beans and provision for the nine months and leave my lord savings in place.

      Don’t do the crime then.

      March 26, 2013

When he “wounded with intent” obviously he was not thinking of the repercussions. If the judges in Dominica handed out tougher punishment, then maybe these individuals would think twice before committing crimes of any nature. You’re concerned about the perp, what about the victim?
