EXCLUSIVE: “It was not a robbery, it was an ambush” – Alicia Davison speaks out

Alicia Davison, one of the the victims of the brutal Pagua Guest House attack, is contradicting police reports that the incident was a robbery.

“This was a complete ambush,” she said in an exclusive interview with Dominica News Online. “They didn’t come for anything.”

Her husband Rick Davison is presently in Miami receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack while Joe Costello, an Irish national who worked at a nearby hotel, was killed.

According to Davison they were attacked as soon as they got to their room. “As we got to the deck, two guys came out with machetes swinging. It was an ambush, a flash attack. The third guy came up from behind with a hatchet. These guys didn’t come to rob, they came for a fight. So while Rick and I were fighting with the two guys with machetes, Joe heard the noise and came out. As he came around, the guy with the hatchet hit him. One shot and he was down. He was dead within minutes,” she said.

She continued, “One of them took me to a room, tied my legs and hands, then he dragged Joe’s body in there too. The other one took Rick into another room and tied him up too. Rick remembered that he had some pepper spray in the room so he grabbed it when the guy had left the room. When he returned, he asked Rick to give him what was in hand, so Rick turned around and pepper sprayed him. He was masked, but it got him.”

The effect of the pepper spray was instant. “So he started screaming and swinging the cutlass frantically, and then ran off. The other guy with the machete went in there and Rick pepper sprayed him too, and he ran off. The third guy followed them,” she related.

Davison said that the robbers refused money and insisted on attacking them. “We offered them money at the end, so they would leave us alone, but they didn’t take it. They didn’t ask us for anything. If they wanted something, they could have had it. They came for a fight,” she stated.

She believes that more people are involved in the incident and is haunted by the real motive behind the attack. “I also believe there are more people involved. I’m continually asked what I think the motive is. I can only tell you what happened; if I knew a motive I would have tried to prevent such an outcome prior to the incident. I think the police need to find out what the motive was and who else was involved. I don’t mean the men wielding the weapons, I mean the people behind the scenes. Don’t stop with the three thugs, look at the bigger picture. Are there others behind this?” she pointed out.

Davison stated that she thinks Costello was not the target of the attack. “I believe that Joe was not the target. Joe checked into his room around 4:00 p.m. Our other guests that were staying with us were gone for the day and we were at the restaurant. We did not return to our room until 9:00 p.m. that evening. If Joe was the target, then why not take care of your sick business during the five hours they were alone?” she asked.

She lambasted those who choose to concentrate on Costello’s character. “As for Joe’s character, shame on anyone who says he may have deserved this; no family deserves to receive any family member or loved one brutally murdered and delivered in a body bag. Joe was a very nice man, he always made us laugh. He may have had some people who didn’t like him, but who doesn’t? Even if you didn’t like someone, would you brutally murder them with an axe in the back of the head?” she said.

how long will it take for these people to be brought to justice. we need another press interview to know what has progressed. i hate to say but this situation looks like another wash out and if it does the police force should be shaken, i mean shaken up. the head should pay the first price. its becoming a game with these cvriminal investigation. announce a reward. lots of money are played with why not put it in use. its just time for real action mr commissioner.

I was one of the first to comment on this when Skerrit addressed the incident and my opinion was that it was murder and is about competition. Everyone else was talking about robbery and drugs. I was contradicted for my comment by a few people. Now Alicia has come out with her story and most people are agreeing with my opinion. Let’s get to the bottom of this and take care of the real culprit. Until that person is dealt with hopefully no one else will open another establishement in Concord, lest they be murdered too.

Straight after the crime, when the Police stated they were looking for the assailants and asked for anyone who knew anything to come forward, why didn’t they tell the public the men had been sprayed with pepper gas, and so may have irritated eyes? Would have been a bit of a clue.

Judging from the interview with Alicia.

I think It’s reasonable to presume that this assault was meant to deter foreign investors, and planned by someone xenophobic, bearing a hatred for foreigners.

She’s right about looking at the bigger picture. Just WHAT the hell is going on here?

If said people are so afraid of foreign investors taking investment opportunities from locals, then STEP UP YOUR GAME, whoever those “people” are.

And if not, then stop hating for no reason.

Job, these fellas have no investigative skills, you a right it is just a job and a paycheck for them, not a devotion. can you name any successful murder investigation by these fellas, and even if, they go free, because you dumb ^&%$# Dominicans feel sorry for them when they about to give them the axe or when they go to prison and say they found god and they change…good luck. So sad I feel safer in America, every house in DA and the other island have prisons bars on windows and doors, don’t even have a burglar alarm on my house in Yankee country.

My heart goes out to all who have been affected by these heinous crimes with injuries and a loss of life.
All those who were at the hotel, who experienced this trauma and were injured of all know what primarily transpired that night.
Alicia said it was an ambush and that the men were offered money (in the hope that they came to rob) but they refused the money. They had other motives. They were obviously looking for someone or some people to harm.
In a previous article I responded that someone was envious or others were envious and arranged to commit these crimes and murder. It was premeditated.
Alicia stated that there may be more people involved, the head of this massacre, crime and theft. I tend to believe her.
The Police, paid by taxpayers need to be more serious about those investigations. In addition the Police Station should never be without phone service and a free line to receive emergency calls and to promptly answer them.
I urge the Government and the Commissioner to set a plan to further train the Police Force to take their positions seriously. They are not playing a game and with toys. Lives are precious and they must do all in their power to save lives and prevent crimes.
The Police must immediately respond to residents’ urgent calls and pleas. For what other reason does Dominica have a Police Force? I hope that a lesson is learned from this sad situation.
As for those who committed the crimes/ murder, you will never rest in peace in this life or in the next. Mark my words. I urge you to be honest, while God gives you the time. Repent and turn yourself in that you may experience a certain degree of happiness and peace of mind and yes, even though you will be incarcerated.
It is imperative to make restitution in order for God to forgive you.
Granted, a life taken cannot be restored. If you have a heart, you should have remorse for what you have done. However, if you turn yourself in and admit your atrocities with a humble and contrite heart, it may be that God will forgive you. I pray that you will do this for your continued earthly life and immortal life.
Keep in mind that you may be young but those days fly and soon enough you will grow old. The day will come when you will be faced with your eternal judgment for the evil deeds that you have done. What will happen to your soul then if you do not make restitution in this world? Restitution also means turning yourselves in.
    Never commit a crime/murder again. Live a law-abiding life.
You are in dire need of the blessing and graces of God with worship, prayers, penance and doing good to all.
I am a positive person who speak the truth without watering it down and who wants peace, happiness and safety for all.
We are all human beings. Do not harm your fellow people no more.
God is love, compassion, mercy and forgiveness. Do what is right in the world and in the sight of God who takes note and counts our actions and who nobody can deceive. This is the be all and end all of it all. There is no other way to the heart of God and for eternal salvation. May God assist you.

This is a sad day for what we all know to have been a peaceful nature Island. Are these thugs inviting execution style killings? They better know who they attack, because if the Police cannot solve crime, I hope they will not solve the crime either when people begin to take the law into their hands & eliminate those criminals who commit those heinous crimes before they do more! Shame also on those citizens who know who the criminals are & remain quite: The blood of the victims will be upon their hands!

    August 8, 2011

Now that I have read Alicia’s interview with DNO, I am now wondering what this means for anyone with a plan to invest in Dominica, not just foreigners, but Dominican nationals. Does this mean that if you are successfull then some envious person(s) will stop at nothing to get what is yours.

So this was not a straight forward robbery, and IF the attackers were hired by someone else, then when all the evidence comes to light the one that hired them is just as guilty of murder/robbery (and any other charges that can stick) and should also be on trial and given the same sentence.

I’m not going to dwell on the statement by Mr Carrette calling this a robbery, as its obvious that he made that statement before he was aware of the facts(foolish move).

Question is what is at present happening to both businesses. I urge the owners not to keep them closed, because that could be what is expected.

Thank you DNO for at last giving us the full story. Although I am sure most people had already worked out that the motive was not robbery, as money was offered and refused.
It really does sound like Joe was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and simply came out to help his friends, otherwise, surely he would have been attacked earlier, while he was alone.
Thank God that Rick had pepper spray and managed to fight off the assailants and save his and Alicia’s lives. I really cannot bear to think what the outcome of this event would have been otherwise.
I am sure that if Alicia knew who was behind this, then she would tell the police. If they are ever to return to Dominica, where they have invested so much of their own money, then the person behind this crime also has to be behind bars.
The only people who know for certain why the vicious attack took place, and who was behind it are the assailants, and the police need to get these guys to talk.
The obvious reason seems to be jealousy/removing the competition.
I hope Rick is receiving the best medical attention, and making a good recovery. Alicia must be so proud of her husband, and rightly so – he saved their lives.
Take care, Rick and Alicia – my heart goes out to you both.

I had the same thoughts as Alicia from reading the police report. It did not sound like robbery was the motive to me. Robbers come steal and leave. They mainly run if they are interrupted, but in this case the sequence was different this was an ambush and i have the feeling that these people were hired thugs, who sent them? and why is what we need to know.I think Joes’ death was an accident,he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is alarming that people would go to such lengths to destroy the image of our beautiful Dominica.

What’s happening to this beautiful Island of ours, the once sleepy unknown Island of the Caribbean, our country is getting in the news for all the wrong reasons, lax criminal enforcers give the criminals element an upper hand over the police, and that has to be worrying, the present danger to our efforts to promote Dominica as a tourism destination have been severely damaged by the action of those criminals who have committed this evil crime that goes beyond understanding, people is going to stop coming to Dominica. Our criminal justice system of most heinous and horrendous crimes has to send a clear message to the perpetrators, there is only one reply capital punishment. If you don’t want to do the time or punishment don’t do the crime no more carnival at the so called state prison (Stock Farm) which in reality is a holiday camp, how does one explain the criminals that has been incarcerated there, as soon as they are released they do their outmost best to reoffend in order to return. It appears life is too sweet at Stock Farm Prison.

    • August 8, 2011

I think that the lady may well have a point. What happened is disgusting, distressing and a downright negative for ti Dominique. Like it or not we don’t need this type of publicity or criminality. If there is a ringleader targetting, they need to know that their days are numbered and that the same sentiment will be shown to them and their kin when they least expect it!

Thank you Alicia, you have just made Dominica safer for all of us by coming out and telling the truth. People were scared of robbery with such violence. Yes, if someone comes to rob give them what they want and hope that they do not hurt you physically. Joe was a good man and liked by many people. Poor Joe it was a very, very, sad day for him, his friends and his family. Alicia and Rick I wish you both a speedy recovery. I admire your bravery and I am so terribly sorry that you had to endure such a terrifying brutal attack. It was so lucky that Rick was able to spray the people with pepper spray. You are very brave and yes, the police have to do a thorough investigation. It was very odd that they issued the statement they did which was totally incorrect. It was not good for this statement made by the police to go out world wide as I have said earlier it makes it safer for everyone in Dominica that it was not a robbery.

My guess is Alicia and Rick must have at least 2 or 3 different suspicions why they were attacked in that way, and out of those, there is one that they think is most likely. So there is more to this than meets the eye, I just hope the police can use that information wisely and quickly…

My point exactly. Even before an investgation is completed, the police had already concluded it was robbery. Basic investigation, speak to the victim!! They offered them money. COCOSEC, I could not agree with you more. I have said this already that this does not look like robbery, or at least more than robbery. And now that I heard it from the most reliable witness to the incident, I am convinced that there is more behind this. I hope that the police keep their minds open, and I hope that at least if they don’t have forming investigative training that at least they take the time to educate themselves looking at investigative films. I hope that they solve this case and solve it quickly.

How on earth can the commissioner of police conclude the motive was a robbery when Alicia presumably gave a statement to this effect to the police already ? Either Dominica’s police force are incompetent beyond measure and should all be replaced immediately or there is a cover-up of the real motive. If the motive turns out to be racist or against foreigners generally then everyone in authority in this country should hang their heads in shame. The truth, proper policing and crime prevention are more important than protecting the tourism industry. Get your priorities right, get your act together and get professional !

So, is Alicia saying that Dominica is no longer safe for expats? Will the ‘wider ring’ behind these 3 already caught now be targeting other expats/businesses/vacationers on the island?
When will more information be available from the police? When will the PM tell us what is really happening in his own country?

It goes to say that you have not travelled.

All police investigations commences from the crime scene: evidence collection, fingerprints, photographs, DNA swabs, statements from victims, camera footages, independent eye witness statements and from there springs outwards where suspects are picked up and interrogated.

Do bear in mind that the culprits were masked at the time of the incident. The only thing that will link them to the seen is DNA, as even if he culprits’s voices would have been identified as being that of persons whom they’ve known for years, there still leaves a notion of doubt hanging in the jury’s mind, and a case can never be solve solely on voice recognition.

Do we have a DNA bank where samples from every citizen is kept?

Let the law men do their work please, as a trong case takes many hour to build.

      • Jespen
        August 9, 2011

PATIENCE….. please learn to read and understand what you have read. I simply said that in such a case where the culprits, murderers, robbers (or what ever they are referred to) were masked and gloved at the time of the incident and therefore could not be identified by face, the police has no choice other than to rely heavily on scientific evidence in solving this case and ensuring a successful conviction in the court of law. Nothing about CSI or television. I am speaking from within.

The fact that the police haven’t been forthcoming with the progress that they are making every step of the way, shouldn’t be translated to mean that their investigations are not progressing. The law men can’t just dish out information on the progress that they are making in this case, as such practice only stands to jeopardize their investigations and future arrests.

Oh PATIENCE …., other than DNA matching, Fingerprint hits, Eye witness accounts of what transpired, Voice recognition, Video footage, do you wish to share with us how you would build on a case such as this ????

      • CSI anyone?

They would still be suffering from the pepper spray burns when arrested. That gives you two good suspects. I agree, from that the case against those that committed crime 1 will be built. Know doubt they claimed “robbery” as the motive which is why the Commissioner stated this (bad mistake).

What was their real motive? I would suggest “paid hit”. The investigation should NOT stop at these 3 being charged. Why paid them and why? Only when the people behind this are brought to justice should this case be closed.

I would suggest that with a robbery where a man was killed the perpetrators would get 3-5 years in prison. If they are walking out to a pay cheque then that is not so bad. However, if it was a paid hit then that is premeditated murder with life imprisonment – why do you think they are claiming “robbery”?

These guys had an agenda which didn’t include money, not the regular straight-forward type of investigation the authorities are used to carrying out.

The police definitely have their work cut out for them this time…

A reward might help loosen some local lips…

wow, sounds like a scene from a movie! 8-O
she’s got a point though; if it was a robbery, why didn’t they take any money?

As I said in a prior post, I was indeed surprised that the commissioner chose to conclude on a motive so early in an investigation. Now if the statements made by Alicia are infact accurate, the commissioner was dead wrong. That would be embarrassing.
Thanks DNO for trying to get us the info.

Well, Alicia is an eye witness, the police chief made a conclusion before the investigation began, i believe Alicia and not the police.
      So damn careless in Dominica.
I believe that we deserve a SMART police chief

    Hmmm interesting,

I take it from what she is infering that this was a pure racist attack.

In any case that is not good exposure for Dominica, not good at all.

She has every right to be bitter, every right, however….

    I watchin’ still!

She isn’t inferring anything, she explicitly stated she didn’t know what the motive was, only what it wasn’t.

      @ A Voice.

Are you an idiot? Do you know these people? We from the village of Marigot will definitely disagree with YOUR racist statements. She says it was assult not robbery so those who committed the crime came with the sole purpose in mind of attacking them.

You are an idiot voicing the ignorance that shames our country.

      August 8, 2011

I see nowhere in her statement that she says that the crime was racially motivated. She is simply saying(unlike the chief of police) that it was not just a robbery and that this crime has more people involved than the ones who did the act.

I dont read racism in her comment, waht I think is infered here is that there are people, possible people they compete with for business, who might be involved in this

Hopefully as the investigation unfolds the motive and those behind the attack can become clearer. In the meantime we still have some murders to take care of, I say send them all to the gallows. No arguement that you cannot kill three for one murder, but if we choose to hang the murderer with the hatchet, let us sentence the other two to a life (real life, i.e till death) of hard labour.

There use to be a calypso in Wesley in the late 70’s (do the research about whom the song was written), Interalia, “the man is a gunman, the woman is a hatchet woman”. Like Marley would say, “Me just throw me corn, me no call no fowl”

RAB B, I am from Wesley and I remember that song. That song has been striking something especially when I heard about hatchet and one of the alleged criminals in that case. And I think that that song was in the early 80s after an incident with a hatchet to a man’s head.

Hmmmm…. I wonder why was Joe staying at your place? was he running from something? Could it be that they came for Joe and the lady, and mistook you and Rick for them. We really need help ti investigate this matter.

I have attempted to make several comments regarding the lady that was supposedly with Joe, but DNO will not post them. Is it possible that the police are not the only corrupt people protecting a native..?
