Vybz Kartel was sentenced on Thursday

Jamaican dancehall artiste, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer, and his three co-accused have been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

The sentence was handed down on Thursday.

He must serve at least 35 years in prison before he is eligble for parole.

The artiste was found guilty of the crime on March 13, after a 65-day trial.

His defense team plans to appeal the matter.

Don’t drop your guards too much with the conviction and sentencing of Kartel and his friends; there is a bigger problem sitting there waiting. They were convicted for the killing of one man but think of how many persons have been murdered in the Caribbean in recent years, without the murders being caught! That means there are lots of killers in our once proud, safe and beautiful countries and the continued deportations will undoubtedly add to that.

So while one may breathe a sigh of relief – there is work to be done and there is a good chance it starts with helping the police, weather you like them or not.

Life in prison is a tough sentence for anyone. I believe the term of his incarceration was determined by the content of his music, personal activities and the negative influence on the youth of his nation and others. I hope this will open his eyes to his actions and the damage he’s done to himself and others.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well his talent gave him a way out of poverty but he just couldn’t get the streets out of him. The Criminal Justice System in Jamaica worked because he was given a trial and he had some of the best legal minds/ Defense attorney but the truth prevail. His lawyers just couldn’t fool the jury by distracting them from the facts of the case.

Dominica justice system must take a page from J.A book, you should not be able to get away with crime based on fame, amount of monies in the bank or the title of the job held. the last kick in our democracy was the win of Aaron, our magistrates and judges NEED to go back to the drawing board URGENTLY!!!!!!!!

I wasn’t there, but all I know, “Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” “If we live by the sword, we will die by the sword.” I know they are artist, but that does not mean, they cannot be criminals. I have family and friends in Jamaica, and even the policemen are involve in crimes, and sometimes they see the crime and turn the other way.

Dominica should treat Dominica youth when they commit a crime the same way. And most time those artist songs encourage crimes. Put the brakes on those criminals right now. They could be young or old, rich or poor. You do the crime do the time and go to God for he alone can help.

DNO I read it in a Toronto Caribbean paper last weekend. I said to myself, I have not seen this yet on DNO. :) He may appeal but may not be successful.
Look at his hands and his face. His hands are upsetting to look at. It looks like this man is possessed by the devil by his own doing and lifestyle.
During a phone conversation tonight, I mentioned Tommy Lee, his saga in D/ca with all other occurrences and also being arrested for a lottery scam and this man who was sentenced for murder. I said hese men are dance hall artistes, surely, they made a lot of money or ample to live on in also selling their music. Why would they resort to this type of life? The devil, the bad influence in them and bad associates I suppose.
Young people, fellow Dominicans, please pay heed! In reality, crime does not pay. Those who commit crimes and who are not yet caught, they cannot hide forever. Sooner or later they will be caught. It has occurred many times.
Live a busy and fruitful life. You may have to struggle and there may be obstacles. Who has not experienced this? The money may not be much but spend it wisely. In time, you will succeed. The saying, “Take time to do good.” Always with your effort and most of all the help of God, in time you will succeed. This is what pays in the end. Be satisfied with what you have as you strive to do better. Always persevere; never give up.
God bless Dominica’s youths to do good in life and to live a good, law abiding life.

True happiness is not found in the hording of things. It is not the fame and fortunes we amass in this life that’s really important. Having a genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ is what truly matters. It is possible to have all the fame and fortune and not be really happy; conversely, one may not have much of this world’s goods and be very happy. I hope that this man finds peace, freedom and God’s orgiveness even behind bars.

Some excellency you are. You must be one of those and his sympathizers. If people commit crimes they must pay for it on this earth. You do not deprive a man of his life and expect to live. In a non-democratic country, he would not be still alive.

What are you stating? Consider the victims’ families, most of whom, if not all of them have children. They are without a parent that murderers killed.
Who is rejoicing and condemning him? They are stating a fact of the matter. He deserves capital punishment for snuffing off a man’s life. As I read, over a gun or guns. Is this sufficient to take a person’s life? He had no right whatsoever to take a person’s life – under no circumstances. He and his counterparts played God. Let him take what he got based on Jamaica’s justice system.
If the democratic world brought back the death penalty and immediately execute them, there would be few murderers, if none at all in the world. We would all live in peace and safety and able to walk the streets at any time of the day or night in peace.

He is now a ward of the State; not a free man. The State controls him. Thirty five years in prison. When they decide to commit crimes, they should know, if caught what the end result will be.
God, the Creator and Ruler of the world and the Eternal Just Judge controls him in that he better repent, enough to appease God otherwise he is doomed for all eternity. His earthly incarceration is not sufficient to appease God and to be forgiven. This will be double punishment, one on earth and the other in eternity through his own doing.
Take note and pay heed all those Dominicans who have committed crimes and those who plan to do so. You may think you can escape from the Law of the land but you will not escape from our God who knows, sees and hears all things and whom nothing is hidden from. His eyes are on you. Therefore do good at all times.

How can you sit wherever you are hiding under an anonymous pseudonym and talking about crab in a barrel thing in Jamaica when you obviously know nothing about Jamaica and it’s culture.

First and foremost Jamaicans supports their artists 100% and that’s one of the reason why they succeed both locally and internationally. In addition, the majority of the artists get along very well. They work and collaborate an many projects and hang out together at studios on a daily basis. It’s a natural thing for the seasoned entertainers to nurture and mentor upcoming artists. They see it as a role they have to play in the business.

That is what Bounty Killa did for Kartel and many other artists. Kartel is the artists that has made the most enemies in the business because he was not humble and let the fame and hype got to his head and started to think that he was larger than life. As his fan base began to increase he dissed Bounty and made feuds with several other artists including Mavado, Popcaan.

In addition, he failed to separate himself from the ghetto lifestyle and lead a different life when he launched his career. Almost all the artists from the ghetto. That is where reggae and dance hall music are born and that’s where they live. However, once the artist launches their career they usually move away from certain lifestyles because they have a brand and reputation to protect. Kartel did not do that and that’s what led to his demise.

It’s sad what happened to him and no one is rejoicing because they hated him. They hate the lifestyle that he led, the derogatory lyrics of some of his music and the bad imagine it paints of Jamaica on the international scene. There are 2.9 million people in Jamaican and 99.99999% are hard working, decent, law abiding citizens.

The unfortunate thing is that when people read these negatives stories abroad they tend to believe that the majority of Jamaicans are criminals and murders. The sad thing too is that the uneducated ones with shady characters are often the most vociferous. So their character is shown around the world faster than decent citizens who have no time for non sense.

Similarly, when the international press visits Jamaica they only visit the ghetto and never the affluent areas. Jamaica is a very beautiful and peaceful country with a very rich culture and people despite what you see in the news. Millions of tourists come here every year and walk around free and enjoy themselves.

Kartel has his many fans in Jamaica who are grieving but the majority of the population agrees that if he did the crime he should do the time. It has nothing to do with crab in a barrel thing. It’s just a population that is fed up of the few criminal elements that is ruining our country.

He got a fair trial that lasted 65 days and he also had the best legal representation his money could buy. While there were some hiccups in the prosecution’s case, a jury of his peers found him and 3 of his accomplices guilty. People just have to respect the democracy of the Justice system and move on. Reggae and dance hall music will live on long after Kartel is gone. No one man is bigger than the music.
