January Criminal Assizes culminate today

Six matters have been traversed to the May Criminal Assizes, while one matter has been discontinued against a Grand Bay man as the January Criminal Assizes concluded this morning.

A case against Dexter Jno Baptiste who had been indicted on a grievous bodily harm charge, was transferred to the May Assizes. According to Director of Public Prosecutions Gene Pestaina, the accused man is currently incarcerated in Guadeloupe and a warrant continues to be issued for his arrest in Dominica.

Additionally, a matter against Fitzgerald Winston is also expected to come up in the May Criminal Assizes. Winston is charged with four counts of false accounting and theft from J. Astaphan and Company Limited. He is currently on bail.

Meanwhile, a man who was accused of impersonating Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will wait until May for his matter to be heard before the courts. Kurt ‘Shabba’ James, who is now on remand at the Dominica State Prison, was charged with conspiracy, attempted theft, attempting to obtain property by deception, theft and obtaining property by deception.

James, who made a motion for his case to be dismissed, was denied by Justice Birnie Brooks this morning. She also denied his request for bail on his own recognition. She stated however, that bail was and would remain open to the defendant with a proper surety.

Carlon Nicholas, 19, of Grand Bay, who was charged with grievous bodily harm for an incident which allegedly occurred in 2004, was discontinued by the prosecution. Nicholas is currently on remand for the alleged murder of another Grand Bay man.

Two indecent assault cases have also been transferred to May’s Assizes.
