Judge threatens to fine jurors for tardiness

High Court Judge Justice Brian Cottle today issued a stern warning  to persons selected to serve on the jury panel.

A roll call at the 9:00 a.m. sitting of court this morning revealed that a few jurors had not yet arrived. Justice Cottle admonished the tardy jurors, and noted that he had been too lenient with them in the past.

“I’ve been very lenient with people … and as of today if you miss the roll call I will be imposing a fine,” he warned.

A number of matters will be brought before Justice Cottle during the January Criminal Assizes which opened earlier this month.

I agree with the Judge in every way. Jurors should be held accoutanble for comming to Court. If the Judge is there on time why can not a Juror be there. There should be no excuses for the Jurors when they themselves have a job to do to serve on a Jury. If they are being treated lightly once they will takne advantage and the Justice system will not proceed as schedule. What he should do is issue a bench warrant in addition to the fine . If a Jurior was ion trial and they wanted a Jury trial they would want that Juror to appear on time. Do not do to others if you do not want to be done to yourself.

But that is a hell of a thing eh, giving criminals such lenient sentences, no wonder them jurors coming late, that court system is a papishow, after those people deliberate for hours and find a guilty verdict, only to hear the criminal getting slap on wrist.

I quite agree with the Judge. We need to pay more respect to time in Da. Everything always starts late and the the organizer really do not care. All the give is an apology and they think everything is good.
