Law professor at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cavehill campus Tracy Robinson has signaled to Dominica to make its laws, particularly family legislation, more accessible to the public.
“Isn’t it ironic in the small republic of Dominica where his Excellency attends to legislation, that you have to search through Her majesty’s law, to work out what your law is?” Robinson questioned, when she delivered the fourth distinguished lecture of the UWI Open Campus Dominica and the National Bank of Dominica titled: “Institutions in transition: rights, rhetoric, and reform.”
“I call this arrested legal development and it undermines the rule of law,” she continued.
Robinson underscored the need for clearer laws in Dominica.
“How are we to know what our duties are, what our rights are if we can’t discover what the law is?” she pointed out.
This is nonsense. Law cannot be written on a phamphlet or taught in elementary school. For making an own law book, Dominica would have to employ law professors, constitution professors, law comitees, comissions and the likes. Who want to pay for that?
And even when you have the Dominica Law Book, everyday folks still need a lawer to tell them if and how things work.
What could help would be a free or cheap public service ordinary folks can go to to get basic legal advice before they decide to press or drop their case.
It would be good to know what this lady is talking about, can the full text be published.
Thank you so much Lady, keep up the good works!!
“Arrested development hmmmm….”
Thank you Ms. Robinson, I have been saying the same thing. Our fundamental rights should be taught at our schools.
A pamplet should be printed and be given to all Dominicans…………
All Dominicans should know their government and it should be taught in the schools, starting in the 5 th grade and also have an ongoing public discussion/information class. Many govt.s don’t want their people to know anything about the Constitution or what their rights are or legislation that will affect them. When the people know nothing or very little about how their govt. should function, the people in charge can do whatever they like. And this goes for any govt. world wide.
