‘Love’ lands man in prison

A young man who launched a vicious attack on his girlfriend and ransacked her home following an argument has been sentenced to serve a total of six months in prison.

He appeared at the Roseau magistrate’s court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to battery, malicious damage, theft and threats before a Roseau magistrate.

The incident occurred on November 15th, 2011 at Shawford.

Information divulged in the court suggests that the defendant went to his ex-girlfriend’s home and an argument erupted which prompted her to ask him to leave. She then went upstairs.

When the complainant subsequently left for work at about 8am, the defendant followed  her arguing. “If I can’t have you, no one can. I will kill you first,” he told her.

A struggle eventually ensued and the defendant beat the complainant by squeezing her face, throwing her to the ground and slapping her several times to her face. Residents had to come to her rescue.

She later made a report to police and went to work. Upon returning home with her mother at 7:30 that night, the complainant noticed a strong smell of cooking gas from outside the building.

She entered and discovered that her gas was left open, and her house was ransacked. Her clothes were cut and soaked in bleach and two bottles of nail polish were smashed on a wall. She also noticed that her iron was damaged, mirror broken and her Dell laptop missing. She made another report to the police.

The defendant was later confronted on the matter and admitted to the crimes.

The laptop was safely recovered but the damage to the other items totaled $945.00.

During mitigation the defendant said that he was young and in love, and that he never expected things to go this far.

Magistrate Candia George, before passing sentence, urged the defendant to respect women. He was also told to control his anger and make it the last time something like this happens.

Previous offenses of a similar nature did not work in his favour. He was sentenced to serve six month jail on each charge, to run concurrently.

“Love” is blamed for many bad things

Studying this case and others like it will show us that many people do not know what love is. The world
mistakes lust for love. Also what is called love is often a form of neurosis.

True love is not something you “fall” into. It is a genuine care for another person. When you love somebody you want what is best for that person and are willing to sacrifice for that individual’s good.

A man does not hurt or kill a woman because he “loves” her. It is not the woman he loves. He loves what he gets from her be it sex or other favors. He loves the selfish feelings she fulfills in his life or the envious glances he receives from other men when he walks by with her on his arm.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

Melissa, that is the crust of the matter: you “fell”in love. I have always said to my children that they should not “fall in live”, but rather “stand in love” and “grow in love”. Once you fall in love, then you know Dominioca is a mountainous country with lots of rocks and you will eventuyally “break” once you “fall”.

Parents, guardians and ALL authoritative figures, convey this message to the young ones and tell me their story afterwards!!!

He told the magistrate “he in love and he never thought it would go so far”? This guy is a potential murderer since he left the gas on. He is neither a MAN as he slapped the woman. A real man “discusses “issues/troublesome situations.

You see, he was not brought up properly by his parents so when this happens, some one else brings them up (the children)for you. In this case it was his former “lover”.

In Triniodad we have a saying that goes thus: he playing smart with stupidness.

If you are not able to express yourself better than this your comments should not be posted. There are respectable people – even professionals – visiting DNO and this is an insult to them.

    “Young and in love”?

I hope that one of those days, someone will come to know the wrath of God that will cause the rest, to stop and know His Love, which should be their attitude and conduct–as in Jesus Christ, for them to start showing that Love to their loved ones.

“Young and in love” And you treating your loved one with such harsh manner. You should rot in prison!

WHO THE HELL ARE THE PEOPLE DNO ? CASE DONE MAN GOIN JAIL ITS NOT LONGER A SECRET. IS IT UR MALE FRIEND DNO OR UR FEMALE SECRET LOVER? DNO I SUSPECT U GET PAID UNDER D TABLE FOR NOT PUBLISHING THE PERSONS NAME……

ADMIN: For whatever reasons, in certain cases the judge orders that names not be published in the media. This was such a case. So instead of coming with such stupid outburst, why don’t you ask a question first. If you want their names, go to the judge or go to the court house in Roseau. They might give you the names. Otherwise just shut up.

    December 2, 2011

This article is misleading about the actual time to be served. In the first paragraph it states “A young man who launched a vicious attack on his girlfriend and ransacked her home following an argument has been sentenced to serve a total of six months in prison”. In the final paragraph it states “He was sentenced to serve six month jail on each charge, to run concurrently”. The latter statement clearly implies that the man will be serving a lot more than six months as each charge was taken into account in the sentencing. If that is the case and not a miss print I would think it was a fair punishment for the crime.

    • eye la
      December 2, 2011

to run concurrently. Means he only serving 6months

      • Man in Dominica
        December 2, 2011

Yes, concurrently means the sentences all occur at the same time together, so he serves six months and that works for all charges. Consecutively would mean that he’d serve six months for the first charge, AND THEN another six months for the second charge, and so on. So I wonder if DNO made a mistake and meant to say consecutive, or if it really is concurrent this man will only serve six months of time.

      December 2, 2011

It depends on the case…when there is domestic violence involved both names are usually withheld to protect the victim. I think it is in the domestic violence act or some recent legislation dealing with domestic violence.

    December 2, 2011

Previous offenses and he was sentenced to 6 months only? Beat his ex viciously and Left the gas open and he was given 6 months only? 4 counts and 6 months! Not even community service also? Thanks to the Magistrate, life is good for criminals! He deliberately left the gas on.. one wrong move and the lady and her mother could have been blown sky high…”He was told to control his anger, urged to respect women?” That’s it? A slap on the wrist.. And his name is yet to be published? Why? Please DNO, he is after all a convicted criminal.
The public and especially, women need to know about this man who is obviously going to maim or kill someone one day if he is not properly punished, counselled and more corrective measure are not taken! Do we have anger management for violent criminals?
What is it with our justice system? Must we wait until he kills somebody? Where is the justice for his victim? She must be traumatized and living in fear of when the 6 months is over. OR is it 3 months? Prison time can be short. Oh Justice, where art thou? O lahw yai?

SOMEONE COULD BE SMOKING ,OR COOKING .WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT,THERE WOULD BE AN EXPLOSION KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE.THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THAT BUILDING SHOULD ALSO TAKE HIM TO COURT FOR PUTTING THEIR LIVES EXPOSED TO SUCH A RISK

    • Man in Dominica
      December 2, 2011

Or maybe the writer made a mistake and meant consecutive sentences? If the sentences run concurrently, that means he serves just one six month term together for all of the charges. If the sentences run consecutively, that means six months for one charge, followed by six months for another charge… Particularly since it says he had committed this type of offense before–for him to only serve six months seems like weak minded justice to me; he’ll be back out and doing the same thing in no time. This girl should keep a cutlass on her, and her father or brother or new boyfriend should beat the hell out of this guy if he comes back around.

      • August 14, 2014

        What have we here?

        1) Attempted murder.

        2) Illegal entry.

        3) Extensive damage to personal property.

        4) Physical assault and battery resulting in injury.

        5) Death threat.

I grew up in a culture where womanhood is respected. Sorry, I just cannot help being emotional about this type of thing.

In Canada I expect upon conviction any one of these things could have brought more than six months in jail, that is unless the judge was high on something. And I don’t mean to run concurrently (which has to be the sickest thing in the justice system).

Added to this AFTER jail there should be some time for house arrest and then probation. And make sure there is a restraining order if you have that in Dominica. If not the rest is up to the male members of the woman’s family.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.
