Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin to host Peace Conference in Wesley

Behanzin

In response to an upsurge in criminal activity and a spate of shootings in the communities of Wesley and Woodfordhill in recent months, His Worship, Tiyani Behanzin, Magistrate for District ‘G’, has decided to host a Peace Conference on Sunday, January 23 at the Wesley Roman Catholic Church from 3 pm.

Behanzin has explained that persons and agencies have been voicing their concerns and fears to him about an increase in criminal activity in Wesley, Woodfordhill and Calibishie. As a result of those discussions over several weeks, the idea of a peace conference was born.

The peace conference is intended to employ a multi-disciplinary approach and will involve participation from the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, other government agencies, village councils, community organisations and representatives of religious denominations.

Adult and juvenile offenders and members of the various local factions will be invited to participate in private and confidential plenary sessions focusing on conflict resolution and mediation.

The ultimate objective of this peace conference is to bring about sustainable peace to the communities of Wesley, Woodfordhill and Calibishie. For several months those communities had seen a reduction in criminal activity. But the last several weeks have seen a slow increase in violent crime.

In the last eighteen months, Behanzin has embarked upon an extensive public education campaign in various communities, particularly in District ‘G’ seeking to educate and inform persons especially the youth on anti-social behaviour, crime and the law. In those sessions, Magistrate Behanzin frequently encouraged villagers “to take back their streets”.

Although Dominica is known as a peaceful country, there are pockets of crime in some communities which must be addressed as a matter of urgency.

Behanzin sees the peace conference as a first step.

Mr. Behanzin, thanx for being a real patriot. The Parl Rep has a lot to learn instead of passing blame. Continue to stand tall and do not get distracted by the corrupt lawyers and politians who have made it a point of duty to fleece and divide the country.

Mr Behanzin, you have the qualities that the Parl Rep of Wesley does not and may never have. Show her what real patriots can do to help the communities, and continue to stand tall above the corrupt politicians and lawyers in the land.

A truly Noble gesture. Rising above the commonality of the day, even if you are not from Wesley but as a citizen of Dominica you find it necessary to lead the way in taking a bite out of crime and for that Sir, I commend you.

If only your qualities in this regard could be emulated by our Dear Parl Representative who instead of addressing the issue she feels more comfortable denying its existence and spewing rubbish from her lips.

    I salute you sir.

I am thankful for the efforts of Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin. He has always been supporting our community. But the article said that he considers this a first step in our community. Thank you, Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin.

But I want to set the record straight that we have already began a movement for peace in our community. I was part of the Peace Development Workshop that Dr. Peter K. B. St. Jean and the wonderful and dynamic Ms. Athenia Benjamin conducted in a local church last April. Dr. St. Jean headed the workshop as part of the beginning of the Peaceful World Movement in Dominica, and he was calling the islandwide events the Peaceful Dominica Initiative. He has a website on it. He also did workshops in my high school and at my little causin’s school in Woodford Hill, and other parts of Dominica.

Soon after Dr. Jean left, Ms. Benjamin headed a Radical Jam for Peace that was very successful. Dr. St. Jean and Ms. Benjamin were also filming the work for a movie. Dr. St. Jean said that he would be coming back this year, around April because he was doing similar work in other places and had to analyse the information for a book and a movie. He said that would take some time.

I hope that Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin invites Dr. St. Jean and Mr. Benjamin to work with him for the Peace Conference that he is planning. Dr. St. Jean is also the one who worked with Minister Blackmoore in 2003 or so with the Crime Symposium in Roseau so he has experience with these things. We should really get him to help us because the young peole, including myself, have a very good impression of him and he was able to get us to open up and learn a lot about how to really live a more peaceful life. He also showed us a powerfil movie called Lessons from Homicides that he did in Buffalo, NY. The movie touched all of us and some of the young people are still talking about it and how it made them think and change their behavior.

We need to build on things that already started and support the people doing them instead of doing things fresh from start over and over again. I believe we will be more successful in the long run. So get the people who are already helping us to further help Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin.

this is not the first Peace Forum in Wesley or Woodfordhill. Last year there were the peace forum in Woodfordhill at the Woodfordhill catholic church and the Primary school. there was also one peace forum at the Wesley pentecostal church.

this is just a follow up on work that is ongoing.

Will you invite your friends at Q95 to renounce the hate and division speeches that come from them? As soon as you make a personal appeal to Q95, then and only then will I take you seriously and encourage my friend to attend.

I have my doubt and I have been personally asked/spoken to by the your good friend and US based lawyer Gabo to be part, but, again I await your appeal to Q95, without which your conference is just a farce and an other attempt to……………

    Waiting for that appeal. Thanks

Now, that is the job of a leader. Not those so called “leaders” we have who think they are governing Dominica. No examples can be emulated from their behavior or so called leadership.

Thumbs up to you Mr. Behanzi. You are wonderful.

This is an example of one who will not look for personal gains in return for his contribution in community building. He is educating the populace, using his God given profession, so as not to have them come before him to be sentenced and in return get criticized for doing his job. I applaud this innitiative by Tyanni, the Church, the community, and other stakeholders. Please do not politicise my people, we have no time for this! Be positive and pray for Nation healing. Give support and be each others keeper.

    Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin …………………………..

If you want to get on the political scene…………. then just do it!!!!

    That’s a good thing you’re doing but……………….

Don’t pretend you’re doing this only in the name of…. “it’s the right thing to do”. It’s just a matter of time till you decide to jump right into the political circle!! I mean you’ve been using the magistrate cover to attack the government………………. be brave and just come into the political light!!!
