Man caught illegally in home says he is an electrician on duty

Henry Bazil

Henry Bazil of Newtown has been ordered to pay $300 forthwith or he will spend two months in prison for wandering the home of Joseph Lanford in Kingshill without permission to do so.

On the evening of August 2, 2010, Lanford and his wife came home to find Bazil in their master bedroom.

When asked what his was purpose for being there Bazil told the couple that he was an electrician and was checking out the place.

The complainant told police that he had first noticed that someone had tampered with his building-which is currently under construction-when he saw that the plywood which blocks the main entrance was shifted.

He said that he went up to the bedroom using a flashlight and met the defendant who later fled the area.

A report was made to the police.

When confronted by police, Bazil quickly admitted to being in the said home.  He told police, “I was coming from my sister house in Kingshill, going to my home…I was very tired…So I go inside the house to sleep.”

Magistrate George warned him before sentencing, “You cant just go and wander about a person’s place. It suggests that you want to steal … Stay away from people place…”

    @unknown:

    Dominica is a nation of handouts? While not denouncing this, in what way and how much? Have you ever considered Canada, the US and Europe? Have you been listening to the world news? These countries welcome refugees in the thousands and some who are bogus ones, even terrorists which the government is not aware of.
    Canada of all provides a provincial fund, Old Age Security Pension and Supplement Income for everyone who was sponsored by their relatives, including immigrants/refugees who never worked and contributed to the revenue of the country when they attain the age of 65.
    Prior to receiving this financial assistance, if they are younger than 65 and are in need of, they will receive social assistance – welfare benefits with medical and dental care.
    They have all heard of the generosity of those countries and they have migrated by the planeloads.
    Only last week approximately 450 Sri Lankans travelled by boat and landed in Canada.
    The United Nations has stipulated that Canada has to grant them asylum and process them as refugee status. I understood that there are two other boatloads on the way, awaiting to see how successful this boatload of people are.
    They receive financial assistance – free food, clothing, housing, medical care and education, at the expense of and burden on Canadian taxpayers. I am one of those taxpayers. We have no say in the matter and are obligated to grin and bear it. Would love to say more on this matter.
    Therefore, whatever little help Dominica provides for those in need, please do not deny them these few dollars all for love of neighbor who are in dire need of – daughers and sons of the soil, some of whom may have worked but due to a shortage of work and probably illness, they have no alternative but to expect and receive help that you call handouts.
    If only governments would ensure that everyone who is employable in their country is productively employed so as not to be a burden on taxpayers and those who are able to offer help to them. There are those who do not want handouts and would prefer working. People do not get rich or do not become well to do on handouts.

    I agree. Who looks after the unfortunate and lost? Who gives them shelter when the rain curses the ground? Who forgives them when they trespass into our lives? We are supposed to be our brothers’ keepers – so that they themselves become keepers of us. In DA, we have become so desensitive that we have lost all sense of forgiveness and compassion.

    @Kanpeche:
    I agree with you. …And to make him pay $300.00 fine or imprisonment, money he does not have and imprisonment for this unpaid fine which appears to be harsh. He trespassed on another’s property. Did he damage or steal anything?
    He may have been idle and was just curious to view the inside of the beautiful house being built. Thinking beyond, the thought just entered my mind, who knows he may have been wishing he had a house like that and could live in one like that? This man should be questioned further. When caught, the first thing that probably crossed his mind was to state that he is an electrician.
    An incomplete house has building materials unless the owners decided to live in it and would have their other personal property in it.
    The man obviously did not give it a thought that the owners would visit their incomplete home or that they may be residing in it while it is being completed.
    How was he able to enter an incomplete house in the first case? Did he break and enter or did he just walk in? It should have been secure with barricades to deter unauthorized people from entering and easily at that.
    I recognize that the Law has to be applied in such cases. However, the Dominican Law – Judge – Magistrate should weigh out this man’s circumstances and sanity.
    People are sent to prison for the most minute cause, not only in Dominica but elsewhere in the world, as Canada which is the reason some of them, if not, most of them when they are released from prison become worst.
    Really, the norm should be compassion and understanding in this case. A warning should be appropriate and relevant help, if he has a mental impediment. Who is this Judge/Magistrate anyway?
    God inspires. What are material possessions in the sight of the Lord? We do not “think God” be it in our daily duties. If we do, we do not “think God” enough, specifically where the downtrodden are concerned.
    What would Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ say and do (WWJS & D) in this respect? I bet he would forgive this man and offer help of whatever nature he needs it, be it spiritual, moral and financial.
    He forgave his persecutors, those who jeered at Him, scorned Him, spat upon Him, kicked Him, condemned Him to death and crucified Him. He bore these insults and pain all for the love of us.
    It is timely that judges and magistrates consider this and, in such a petty case, be compassionate and provide help for this man. God will bless and grace you for this godly gesture.
    I am also of the opinion that the homeowners could have been compassionate. I recognize that they were surprised and shocked to see him in their house. They could have spoken to him “in a loving manner”. After all, the man did not have a weapon. Did he?
    Some people must also remember their humble beginnings and that of their ancestors. The latter is one of the problems with some people of today, no exception right here in Toronto. They fail to remember this. There are some who have relatives in jail or have had failings with the Law.

    St. Vincent de Paul said: “Be kind! Be kind! And you will be a saint.

    Common, wisdom. You need to have some compassion for your fellow downtrodden native son. Education has nothing to do with a lapse in judgement. As a matter of fact, the most educated sometimes have the biggest lapse in judgement. Show some heart, mate.

    This really made my day. Funny as hell. I am an electrician checking your wires without your permission. That guy does not belong in prison. He should be given a psych evalation, and sent on a retreat for some good rest. Common!!! A guy is tired…wonders off to an empty house for some rest, and you decide to send to the big house for two months. Common!!! Every turn of the clock, the poor wonderer is always taking a ticking. Sad, indeed.

    Compassion, my Dominican counterpart. If you do not know him may be you could go out of your way all for the love of God and neighbor and offer him some assistance, if you are in a position to do so. God will bless you for this loving gesture to one of His other children. Otherwise, make no negative comment. This man is a child of God. He would not have done what he did if he were in a better position. Financial desparation can cause people to do such things.

  18. Gene, Toronto
    August 22, 2010

    @McCoy Tyner:
    Yes! We must be compassionate towards the unfortunate as this man. In reality, it is not a laughing matter. Many of them are victims of circumstances who need help in many respects.
    If he does not have the financial means, where will he get the $300.00 to pay the Court? If this is his first infraction, he should be given a stern warning and a restraining order. If he violates it, then, he should be imprisoned and rehabilitated.
    The Lord loves him in the same manner He loves others, the rich, the poor, etc. It hurts His Most Sacred Heart that there are those who have more than others who are in dire need of.
    Those who are fortunate to have more than he does, as an example, should be thankful and assist those who are in need of, right in their own country. God will bless them for that.
    This reminds me of what I read some years ago in a Reader’s Digest monthly edition:
    There was the picture of this fat, rich man eating. He was the picture of success. Below him on the street, was a picture of a poor black boy who was looking up at him hungrily. The rich man said to him: “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps as I have done.” The little boy replied: “He is assuming I have a pair of bootstraps.”
    Christians know the Parable which Our Lord Jesus Christ told about the Rich man and Lazarus – Luke 19:31.

    Yes! Fools are educated. Everyone at some time or another are fools, one way or the other. Fools are not necessarily the ones who are uneducated. Worst yet, those whom you expect to be educated. I have found that those who are supposed to be intelligent and educated lack same in some respects. And Shakespeare said: “What fools mortals be.””

    Free money ceased? What type of free money? Are you referring to financial assistance from the government which will provide them with at least food? If it has ceased, then it should be restored. How are unemployed and who are unable to obtain a job able to sustain themselves? Is it any wonder that people will find other illegal means in order to provide for themselves? Granted, those who receive such benefits may resort to illegal activities for money. Should the government not provide for them? My heart goes out to the unemployed and those who are in dire need of namely, the unemployed and the poor. May God assist them, commencing with the government.

    To all Dominicans!!!

    What do you all really want? You all said that you want change/help for Dominica, but it’s seems that every time a crime is commited and a punishment is handed down,it’s not fear to you all, granted some of the punishments are much to severe for the crimes that were commited.

    So I asked the question again what do you all want?

    There are laws that govern every country and state in the world. And just because you know someone and they commited a crime does not give them the right to get away with it. Laws and rules are on the books to protect all of us.

    So to all Dominicans put up or shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. August 21, 2010

    As a former detective i must say with laughter that thou he was caught red handed his reason for being at that location is very cunning. First he did not waste the courts time secondly he did not acted in a violent manner towards the property owner. This is the type of case we would refer too as a cooked case. To my fellow officers a word of advise to my friends and the higher ranks of the Police Force pay closer attention to the manner you all are using the cuffs on those guys it is always risky to cuff just one hand of a prisoner and even more dangerous to have TWO PRISONERS cuffed and clearly each one has one hand free that`s a disater waiting to happen come on guys lets think ahead of those bad guys. The excuse they used to give is not enough cuffs to cuff each prisoner individualy that may be so but in the end it might be an accident waiting to happen not only to the prisoner but to others around them, or use plastic cuffs like the ones we use in ????????? BE safe and continue the good work of making Dominica as safe as possible.

    Well let us laugh while we can. King Solomon said, “a merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones”. Proverbs 17: 22
