Man charged for allegedly breaking into sales bus

One individual has been charged while another is being sought for allegedly breaking into and stealing over $4,000 worth of items from a Starrin and Sons Co. Ltd. sales bus at St Joseph.

Edward Wallace of that community pleaded guilty to the theft before Magistrate Ossie Lewis on Friday.

According to one of the two charges leveled against him, Wallace stole over four cartons of corn beef and several other cartons of oil, mixed vegetables, Sex Drive energy drink, green tea, canned tuna, ketchup, vinegar, green seasoning, peanuts, cheese, cans of corn kernel and many more items, valued at $4,129.43.

He was also charged with causing malicious damage to the front door of the bus between January 8-9, 2012, when the incident occured.

The damage  to the vehicle was valued at $2,270.69.

The facts of the case and sentencing have been adjourned for Monday.

A charge of receiving stolen goods was withdrawn.

Wallace, who is a fisherman by profession, was said to have moved the items using a boat.

The investigating officer revealed in court that the other individual being pursued had fled the scene upon seeing the police.

Wallace was released on a $5,000 self bail. This is his first offense.  He was represented by Attorney Bernard Wiltshire.

The case was dealt with on Monday 16 January and I was right there in the court room and it was very interesting. I could not believe that the defendant told the police who the real thieves were and instead of trying to apprehend the real culprit(s) who broke the bus they wanted to pin all the blame on the young man. Even after he told them who were the other person(s) involved, and was cooperating fully with them. Was this guy not represented by a lawyer he would have been in jail or would have to pay the value of all the goods recovered or both. As it is the police some time to find the real perpetrator(s). So “1979 laughs out loud” the police have been given a second opportunity to see that REAL JUSTICE is served. And in the same breath let me say that I am very concerned with the way the police go about investigating crimes. I have observed them over s period of time and realize that because of their gross incompetence citizens of this country get a real watered down sense of justice. LORD HELP US IN THIS LAND!!!!

It is unbelievable (yet believable) that a fisherman would steal grocery items. Is business slow? If it is, ask for financial help and also groceries but you should not steal from your fellow people. If caught you will have a criminal record and now you have one for life.
There are people who own stores and small ones at that who are barely making ends meet. Did you ever consider that? When you steal from them what do they have left? You could harm their livelihood. Have a heart.
I hope the store owner has a business insurance policy. If the stolen goods are not found, the thieves may never be able to make financial restitution. Who will repay him? Will the DA government recompense him?

I’m hearing loads of arrests when it comes to petty crimes. Although every crime is to be punished. I’m still waiting to hear about the prosecution of the drug dealers (because let’s face it, dca seem to have millionaires from drug dealing) in dca. Prosecution of the murderers and violent attacks. We need a serious shake up pronto, because it’s not like the authorities don’t know who these people are. One cannot accumulate millions in Dominica without having established any form of business or company. And even with having a business, it is still hard to accumulate that kind of wealth. I am fed up with leniency in this country now

All you can give all thumbs down it have, but as long as people taking people fish or goods on credit and doh paying them, as long as they head rotten then people will do what they have to do one way or the other to get their money back from the person. Why the court doh make them paying what they owing him for his fish first? Sometimes people do things and only half the story is told. Mr/Mrs Magistrate, Dominicans what is the reason that this man did this? Some people will get what they looking for because it seem the court giving them right even when they wrong and you take matters in your own hands. DNO investigate the root of that issue and bring balance to this story, that man doing too many things in Dominica and have heart to even take people to court, but tanto tanto

If he was infront as a magistrate I wouldn’t charge him a dime! The owner has no moral authority to charge or complain about theft!

Are you making any sense? Why does the owner not have a right to complain?

      January 15, 2012

      @ Amazing

You need to clarify what you have stated. Why should he not complain to the police? Is he not the owner of the bus and store? Some of the items were stolen from the store. Do you know something that others do not know? The magistrate should subpoena you to testify to your comments.

In that same community of St. Joseph, a culprit confessed tp have broken into the place of ‘sicko’ ‘Seco’ on two occasions. Up to now no complaints, no arrests, no investigation. No court case. Nada. Nothing. That incident was news all over the community. Villagers and Many a Dominican wonder why no complain was made to police about those thefts.

      January 15, 2012

Sound bites, the answer is easy.
      1. The police, police commissioner, and certain politicians do not want to open the forbidden can of worms

2.As a result, anything that has to do with ‘seco’ may cause some unwanted questions and as a result, tottaly ignoring Seco related incidents is their best way of keeping the can of worms which they have sealed, from being opened.
