Man fined for beating girlfriend

31-year-old Kenny Laurent of Glasgow, Fond Cole will hopefully learn that he ought to control his temper and emotions after he was fined for beating up his girlfriend.

He faced charges of battery and threats on a female to which he pleaded guilty.

He will now have to find $600 to pay for his trangressions. He was further placed on a one-year bond to keep the peace or in default pay $1,000.

According to reports, Laurent confronted his girlfriend, Louise Africa, last week at the Roseau New Market and when she refused to listen to him, he slapped her a few times across her face.

“When I meet you by yourself I will kill you,” he said to her.

But when he appeared in court on Friday, Laurent was a different man. “I was mad that she ignored me when I tried to talk to her about our child. I was vex and really sorry for what happened,” he told the court.

He was warned about his behaviour and asked to keep the peace with Africa who told that court that she has taken his threats seriously and is “fearful of him.”

“I live in fear of him since he says he will kill me and then kill his-self,” Africa told the court.

But Laurent stated that he had no intention of committing such an act.

This case takes place in Dominica, but the script has also been written and refined and played out in many countries, regionally and internationally. Something is happening in the world that makes many young men believe that it is acceptable to physically abuse women. Note, i do stress “young men” because based on what i know most of the culprits are “young” – 18 to 40. Try a Google search and see what you come up with on the topic!

Something is happening to feed this socio-cultural transformation. A research topic, anyone?

Why is the “Victims’ name in the public domain?

Peeping I agree with you the Margistrate should impose a restraining order, at least he/she would know this is not tolerated even though what’s in a mans’ heart is his desire. But you know what sadly so often these women return to these men like a revolving door and the cycle continues.

Is there a history of this guy beating his woman?

Sounds like a spur of the moment slap to me. Not a severe beating. But whatever the case he has no right and maybe the fine should be little stiffer.

On the other hand if what he says is true, why is it that she ignores him, if he is attempting to talk to her about his child? Again, no excuse to slap her but are we missing something here and doesn’t a man has a right to know about his child?

Some women are just like the Black Sigatoka, they use and abuse men and move to the next. Real materialistic.

Right now its better man just don’t fall in love with women. love them but don’t fall in love. women take advantage of men that love them. She knows the guy is in love with her but she is using him. If she was in love with you brother she would have thought about it before making you make this portion of the news. take hid.

It is dishearting that in 2013 our country still has not gotten serious about domestic violence. So many women (men too but to a lesser extent) are being beaten, threatened, harassed, etc. and we have no system in place to help them. we are invariably creating a culture where domestic violence is accepted. As a people we need to do much better than that. It’s only once a year we hear all kinds of nice speaches when we commemorate domestic violence awareness or something akin to that. Shame om us!

    • still
      January 14, 2013

why do we just focus on “domestic violence”? We should be focused on all types of violence and eradicating them all. is it ok for a man to slap another man or a woman to slap another woman. why dont we hear about “human violence”? if it is wrong it is wrong whether it is done to a man or woman. persons involved in “domestic violence” already have violent tendencies whether to other men or women.

If some American men knew that the only consequence to beating their girlfriend/wife was a fine, American municipalities would never have to worry about revenues! Dominica has struck gold!

    • Whatever
      January 14, 2013

Tim is that what you got out of the article, that beating women consequences is simply a fine in Dominica? In the very America you speak of,where I live and pay taxes women are brutalised daily even after men have been imprisoned. They are ordered to pay fines too, sent to anger management classes, face imprisonment and that still doesn’t deter the majority. Most times this is a sad cycle with the women constantly going back to these men so even America and it’s municipalities are not immune to this.

Ok, i understand the fine, but the magistrate ought to have been empowered to impose a restraint order on this guy. As it currently stands, the lady has to file a separate request for such an order (please correct me if i am wrong). I think in cases where it is proven that the lady’s life is at risk, as in this case, the magistrate or judge should have the power to impose certain mandatory restraints on contact between the guilty and the victim. Let’s face it, what is now standing between that lady and that man’s threat to kill her? The court should do more to protect the victims, especially women (in light of the current rise in physical abuse by men of their women).

While I agree with your argument…….I bet you those people leave the court together……she fearfull she say but when court finish she going home with him…..This is the hypocracy that i cannot stand

      January 14, 2013

No offense, but does a retraining order create some sort of magical defense? If the guy really want to kill her, he will do so even with a restraining order.

      • Tri-State Beauty
        January 14, 2013

You have a point Tim however at least on the surface the court will have a legitimate claim that it did all it could to protect her. He hitting her in the public, I guarantee you it’s not his first strike. These things begin behind closed doors and slowly the offenders feel empowered to strike out anytime, anyhow.

      • Peeping Tom
        January 14, 2013

You are correct, Tim, the restraint will not protect her from his wrath. In fact, we can also say that once someone wants to kill you, the only way the State can protect you is to lock you up in solitary confinement. Well, the fact is, the restraining order has more teeth than a mere fine and “go in peace and sin no more.” Armed with this order, anyone who sees this guy near the victim can inform the police and, in theory, help save her life. So, although it is no death-proof vest, the restraining order says and does more than a mere fine and rebuke.
