Man gets second chance for theft

courtMagistrate Bernard Pacquette on Monday gave a second chance to a 27-year-old ‘handy boy’ of Bath Road after he was found guilty of theft.

“Do not commit another offence, go and be careful, do not come back,” was the advice given to Niah Kirton.

According to a police report, Kirton broke into his uncle’s (Anselm Prince) bedroom and stole one gold ring valued EC$ 267 and a red polo shirt valued EC$ 85.

It is reported that Prince had secured his home on December 13 and on his return, the following day, saw that his door was broken. Upon investigation, he noticed the ring and shirt were missing.

A report and arrest was subsequently made and Kirton was quoted as saying, “well what I have to say I wrong, I wrong wii.”

He said that the door to the bedroom was unlocked and he usually uses the bedroom to shower and change.

He said that day the padlock was not on so he gave it a little pull which resulted in the wood splitting. He said he did not intend to steal the ring, but put in on his finger and one thing led to another, and he ended up selling the ring for $50 to a male college student.

The magistrate said that he took into consideration that he had no prior offence, he did not waste the court’s time and plead guilty and genuinely seemed remorseful.

As a result, he gave Kirton a six month suspended sentence for one year and cautioned him to keep away from trouble with the law.

On his way out, Kirton shook hands with the arresting officer and thanked the court.

He walked out with a pleased expression on his face.

How sweet of the court! I believe in second chances. Let’s hope he does well with the court’s mercy. We all need a second chance sometime.

Great work by the magistrate.. She used her discretion, understood the story then handing down the sentence. The shaking of the police officers hand made a huge difference in the character of this young boy. the magistrate read him well.
