Just days after publicly calling on individuals to look out for counterfeit Eastern Caribbean $100 and $50 bills, police have prosecuted a Louisville man for using counterfeit US currency.
Troy Samuel pleaded guilty to fraudulently converting a US $100 bill and was sentenced to six months in prison when he appeared before Magistrate Candia George yesterday, Police Spokesman Claude Weekes told Dominica News Online.
The incident occurred at a Texaco gas station on Goodwill Road recently. Weekes said Samuel had presented the gas attendant with the illegal bill to purchase $20 worth of gas. He was then given his change.
Subsequently, the money was deposited in the bank and identified as fake. Samuel was later arrested and brought before the court.
Though attorney Peter Alleyne mitigated on his behalf, it was not enough to convince the court not to impose a custodial sentence as he had several previous offenses and was on bail when he committed this crime, Weekes said.
Meanwhile, Weekes applauded the public for their efforts and further advised them to be on their guard. He said that Samuel’s sentence should send a strong signal to perpetrators.
“Christmas is coming, be on the alert,” he further advised citizens.
i would suggest that business owners/anyone, take a car tag, drivers license # or passport # with suspected bills. this would deter most from using them.
Great idea!

This looks like my computer. Well, I note that you are making it easy for your users’ typing comments. This is just great!
It is easy to make typographical errors. Always trying to be a perfectionist which you could call self-pride in this case, I do try to proofread my writing and eliminate all errors. One reason being that many people will be reading the blogs.
Good consideration DON!
boy wey hey sottt!!! lol papa met…. the thing is that they didnt understand convert…. convert means to change into…whether it is 100 or 0.25…. it can be converted… i am embarassed for u ..wey hey u stated your point with such confidence… ridiculous….hahahaha…atleast u can use the computer or did some one do it for u and u were jus lookin on
so molesting/ attempting to molest or rape gets you 6 months and counterfeit gets you six months? me alone that seeing the problem here?
The pen test does not work with the new counterfeit bills that are being circulated. The attendant should not be fired or anything like that because she was very helpful in remembering who gave her the money (US). It could happen to anyone receiving money to mistaken a counterfeit note for a real note. Even a bank teller!
Even the supervisors and managers in the banks are not able to tell the difference sometimes (speaking from personal experience). Some before we go doing our usual thing and criticize people we should pray it never happens to us. Because I sure is you brokes and you change your last $100 for the month and you get $60 and the fifty bill is fake, you pwee. Because no business will take back the fake bill from you if you accept it. And you can go to the police but they will deny is they that give it to you. You word vs. theirs’.
As much as the police are excited about this arrest, the persons who are manufacturing the money is still out there. This man may be innocent, just as more persons may be caught up in innocent spending.
Admin
I’ll publish as a commentary tomorrow.
Thx
@wey-hey…: Dominica has lots of such foolish people like you!!!
Thank God for people like you that these reponses can be made anonymously because your comment just does not may any sense. Stop rambling and stop teaching kids to make issues when there is none.
@Admin please fix my typo by removing the man from my last sentence
love the site but wish it could have an official registration and the ability to edit your own posts

We have a feature that will enable you to do that soon – part of our new design.
thanks d.n.o
@alas:
They also said that the man was on bail at the time of the offence
@mouth of the south:
If mr. read DNO your thing won’t work again eh but he probably have ways to check that by now anyway.
@wey-hey…:
One thing you smart
somebody give the man this man a prize so he can go back to pre-k
they did not give him enough jail time cause if it was in the U S A he would be injail for a long long time good job judge next time more jail
@weh-hey, what is so confusing about the story? it makes complete sense.
@alas, the story clearly stated the guy was on bail when he committed the offense and has a history of previous offenses. No court, anywhere, would have let him off or even put him on bail.
Business places and their employees should be more vigilant. Buying $EC20 gas on a US$100 note is enough to raise suspicion.
@wey-hey…: lol now that person jus down right ridiculous
@Mudd: how u mean,,,all money is legal tender,,,there is no law saying u can’t cash e.c $20 on a u.s $100,,, but for commonsense sake u have to be vigilant,,,,but the manager must also slap dem self in the face cause if the employee had the pen to mark the bill then it would have been used,,,,n the man is foolish cause he supposedly cash that in a gas station where he is known lol,,,,and using a u.s $100 bill,,,,commonsense is really not so common eh,,,,,but again gimme a dumb criminal than a smart one all d time!!!!
The story not making sense…what did he convert a US$100 to??? Isn’t the $100 dollar bill the largest denomination in this particular currency??? why would one convert one denomination to a smaller one???!!! DNO probably needs to look at the word choice here…
ADMIN
Oh my God (sorry for saying OMG).. The man used the $100 USD to buy $20 EC worth of gas. $100 USD in EC currency is approximately $267 EC… so he should’ve gotten back $247 in change… which was the objective (getting rid of the counterfeit currency in exchange for legitimate currency change)… I just asked my 11-year-old cousin to read the article and tell me what it means and he explained it just as I did. There is no confusion.
papamet admin u killin me wit laughter
u do rite , mr doin like he hve no common sense…stupes
any child cud figure dat out
my boy that is a dumb move n the clerk should be fired lol,,,, no the manager should slap himself in the face,,,cuz the pens should be made available to trace on the u.s bill,,,,,,how did the lawyer not successfully defend that case,,,,,so u mean that was the only u.s bill they had in the draw,,,,i glad they catch u but i see that problem will continue cause u r not one of the smart ones,,,,,dats why i say gimme a dumb criminal than a smart one,,,,how can u do that with a $100 bill thats why is u.s $20 bill peeps must look out for cuz if u smart this is the one u’ll use,,,,,,first of all the dumbest rum shop clerk wont accept ur u.s $100 bill cuz they’ll simply say no change,,,,so ur only choice is to go to a bank which is a dumb move,,,or go to a place that have money like a gas station,,,,n still they would catch u,,,,,but it u have the u.s $20 bill u can buy 5 beers for u n ur boys n u’ll get change my friend lol,,,or u can go by J.B’s n by 3 large banana juices,,,j.b touching u.s every day he won’t mind dat lol
but i glad they catch ur skin,,,although i think ur case could have been successfully defended,,,but dat 6 months not rite,,,its obvious u was used as an example n thats just wrong of the system
dey send d man jail one time for a fake money
but some ppl killing and dey outside
oh lord i dunno wat happening in dominica.
wats next????
SORRY, but I was the employer of the employee, I would have made her pay me my money because you cannot be so stupid to cash EC$20 on a US$100 bill.
