A man, who stole a laptop and demanded sex to have it returned, was fined $1,000 when he appeared before a Roseau magistrate.
Ricky Panthier of Savanne Paille, has to pay the fine by March 31, 2014, or in default, will spend four months in jail.
According to court documents, Panthier was a friend of the complainant, Annie Dubois, who possessed a laptop valued at $1,500.
On January 18, Dubois secured her home and went to Portsmouth. Upon her return the following day, she realized her house was burglarized and the laptop missing.
She went to Panthier’s home and told him of the incident and he told her he knew who stole the computer.
He went on to say that he could reveal the culprit but Dubois must pay him “not in cash but sex.”
However, she told Panthier that they were friends and she was not going to give in to his demands but needs assistance to retrieve her laptop.
Later that day Panthier came to Dubois’ home with the laptop but the memory card, which contained her photos, was missing.
She pleaded for the card and she eventually called the police, who arrested Panthier.
He denied breaking into the house and stealing the laptop.
“I just helping the woman to get the laptop, I did not break her house,” he told the police.
He later admitted to stealing the computer saying that he was returning home from a party at 3:00 am and he entered the house and simply took it.
He subsequently apologized for his actions.
“You fully co-operated with the police. The laptop is OK and it was recovered but you need to respect people’s property and after you took it, you asking her for sex, that’s very, very bad,” chief magistrate, Candia Carette-George, told Panthier.
I learn something very important today about the human race and our rush to judge people we have never met or interact with on any level. The magistrate rule on what was before her, but if she new the kid am sure she would have rendered her verdict differently, this is a kid I happen to know personally, he needs help he is not all there in his head, and while am not blaming any one or condoning his action, am still saying we as a nation must research and investigate properly before we give our tongue liberty.
There are thieves and criminals all over the island. THERE is a gang of female bandits who is escorting money from their boyfriend.
The magistrate sound like a kinder garden teacher she should be a social worker not a magistrate, come on put your foot down .

So what if he cooperated with the police or the Court for that matter. He committed a crime by breaking and entering home with the intention of stealing. This was premeditated. Then he stole her laptop and lied about it. On top of that he demanded sex from her. Some friend. Note how many crimes he committed and could have been charged for.
He is something else and bold on it to ask the woman to perform such an act in order to return her laptop to her. Shame on him.
What happened to her memory card? The fine of $1,000 is insufficient. These are serious crimes.
If he broke and entered once (i.e., if this is his first time) what prevents him from not doing so a second time or more? He should also be imprisoned for a year or more. Let him learn a lesson by being incarcerated for a period of time. Hopefully, this should make him genuinely remorseful and change his attitude.

After a few times, it is too bad you did not place a trap to catch the perpetrator(s) in the act – on the spot which would have made it impossible to escape. The police would have caught whoever it was red handed.
We have criminals in the north who have a pony scheme going on extorting money from their boyfriend in the states.

If as you stated, he may have felt that way, what a way to get her attention and anything from her. Only stupid people as he would do and say such a thing. He failed tremendously. He has lost a friend, no doubt for life. It was not worth it.
I do think he thought she would never have considered that he would have done such a thing. He thought he would get away with it. Foolish enough he would have told her someone else stole it and he would find the laptop.

Artfield if you hear my story about a 38 year old thief in the nothern part of the island, you will say that boy is an angel. That thief and I had a very close relationship and she used that relationship to rob me of thousands of dollars. That 38 year old is working with a group of well respected citizens in the community. She is well connected with a lawyer that help her cover her tracts. Artfield that person is young and strong and should be working like all of us. Instead she decide not to work but steal money from men using deceiption. This is very, very sad. I never thought things like that would have ever happened on our island. Man if I show you that person you’ll never believe me . I hope she makes a mistake so that the law can get hold of her. What a piety for such a young person to be involved in such activities instead of working to get honest wages.

Interesting, that thief has risen to another level in Dominica in that men are now demanding sex in return for the stolen property. I guess in lieu of gun violence and these constant killings why not resort to sex? Perhaps that may advance to the accused going to court and request of the magistrates (male and/or female) sex? A reasonable punishment would be sending the man to prison for a week so he can get some sex there (both ways). That would be a good form of rehabilitation for him.

Listen there are so many hideous things going on within the communities all in the name of “money”. People of all works of life are involved. I know of one who is deeply involved in the church choir,(no bad feeling about church people) but that angel is involve”money” is all we know. What a sad state of affair.
