Man tells court presence of daughter forced him to steal

Michael Charles of Bath Estate was sentenced to a six-month term of imprisonment after he admitted to a charge of burglary before Magistrate Candia George earlier this week.

According to the facts of the case, the incident took place on July 29 when a burglar bar at the house of Noreen Smolanoff was cut to gain entry into the house. A black digital camera, a pair of headphones, a white Playstation Portable and £750 in cash were stolen. The total value of the goods and cash stolen have been estimated at £1,198 or EC$4,466.

In his statement to the police, Charles said, “Officer, my daughter was around for the summer from New York and things were tight with me. I get the courage and I go by Noreen home and I took the camera and some English money. I took a white PSP too. When my daughter was going, I give her some in the money and I keep the rest.”

He continued, “Officer, I don’t know what got into my head. Tell [Noreen] I sorry.”

None of the money was recovered during the police investigation, but Charles was arrested on the September 19.

Acting on his own behalf, Charles pleaded with the court not to be sent back to Stockfarm Prison stating that he was sorry. Despite his pleading, Magistrate George sentenced him to six months imprisonment.

Why put the burden of your crime on your daughter’s presence? What kind of father are you? Did the camera and PSP and headphones feed your daughter? If she was the reason you stole, why didn’t you give her all the money when she was leaving? MAN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if I have to say myself, dude is beyond rehab. Some of us seating here making excuses for this repeat offender. Anyone who knows of the situation knows that this man is a good for nothing person who feels the need to steal from everyone to make his living. A young able bodied man who would steal from his own dam family wouldn’t go and steal from Noreen? He’s stolen from all jobs he’s had. Ask him if he knows his kid’s favorite color. Went to court for child support and told the judge he can’t take care of his son because he taking care of his daughter in NY. What???? That poor kid and her mother. Luckily for the kid she doesn’t need a dime from this man. Did he spend quality time with her when she was in Dominica? Did he really send a dime back with the child? The mother tries to keep him involved in his kid’s life, not even a phone call on her birthday? Yet things hard for this man? Please… a kid does not need material things more than she needs to know her parents really love her. What about his first son? Poor child. He’s stuck in Dominica with a stigma – his father is a dam tief. At least the little girl is away from him in NY. So all of you who want to just seat there and run you all mouth about things hard in DA, go tief nuh to take care of your kids. That man can not be rehabilitated. No one can change you if you don’t want to change your dam self.

You really brand him as a good-for-nothing. He may be a thief. What was his upbringing like?
Keep in mind he is a human being as yourself. He could be rehabilitated if he so wishes and if there is a proper department and worker(s) who possess relevant credentials.
There are some people who did not receive the proper nurturing and education. This may be the reason why they resort to unlawful deeds.
Our Lord said: “Everything is impossible for human beings but nothing is impossible for God.”
This man also needs the blessing and grace of God. If you know him, try to help him in those respects. There are times by the actions of some people they are crying for help but others do not recognize it and as such.

My dear Justice and Truth nuff people try to help him. I do understand your point about not giving up. You cant help a single soul if they not willing to help themselves. I know him personally that’s why I’m giving my 2 cents. I commend Kalmwee for not giving up. Hopefully his daughter won’t give up when she finds out she was blamed for his wrongdoings. What about his son? Smdh.

        @ Justice

We like to blame society and our upbringing for all our issues. But there comes a point in one’s life when they have to take responsibility as adults for their actions. I know way too many people who’s been straight to hell and back and they still manage to be decent people. Not blaming the workd for their issues. This man had people who were there for him to support him knowing his history. Chhhhhhh! I’m sorry I’m not God. Even he gets fedup with the human race and their nonsense.

He did the crime, he should do the time.

it dnt matter if the child is nine or twenty nine dats no reason to steal.wat he should have done is to explain to her that he havent got anyting to give, but he loves her n he is happy to spend the summer wit her.that child is going to be scarred mentally hope is short term.

St Joe, kids these days are not dumb. She knows exactly what kind of father she has. By the grace of God and with support of her family she’ll be just fine. She’ll put him in his place at some point in her life I’m sure.

I disagree with you. Think positive. When she grows up and since she resides in the U.S. hopefully she will be broadminded and intelligent enough to forgive her father and to delve into his past life from since his childhood and the manner in which he was nurtured.
Everyone deserves a second chance be it more chances. God gives us a second chance and more then we must be willing to give them that chance. We must never give up.
If he is alive, she may feel sorry for him and assist him to the extent that he will be remorseful and never steal again. I hope she will not turn her back on him for what she (everyone) reaps, she (they) will surely sow in the long run and in the end. What goes around comes around in time.
Do you know the saying, “There but for the grace of God go I?” Think about it. Food for thought.

@ Justice that’s up to that little girl. It’s her decision wether or not she wants any type of relationship with him. Yup everyone deserves a second chance. Let’s see if her father will earn it.

He most likely took the other items to sell. He should be made to make restitution plus the jail time, then maybe he would think twice about taking what is not his.

        @ SOTTE

Surely the daughter was living with someone as her mother who should have known her father’s circumstances.
Who paid her airfare to travel to Dominica? She must be living better off than her father in N.Y. When she arrived in DA was she residing with him?
On the other hand “Thou Shalt Not Steal”. He was wrong to steal another’s property. He should have known that he stood a good chance of being caught.
He is to be pitied. Pride caused him to steal. He did not want his daughter to know that he is poor.
If the father is young enough and healthy he should have tried to get a job especially if he was aware in advance that his daughter would be visiting. Could he also not try to borrow some money? I hope after he completes the imprisoned time he will be rehabilitated and become a useful citizen.
Parents, the government, churches and schools must assist those people when young. If per chance they get in trouble with the law as in this case they should be rehabilitated as petty criminals although what the man stole was not “petty, E.C. $4,466. It is referred to as under $5,000. I hope that this man is not beyond rehabilitation and that he will seek employment or someone will offer him some sort of employment. Let us be compassionate and forgiving as Our Lord Jesus Christ has taught us and expects of us.
