Man’s mitigation plea falls on deaf ears

“I didn’t do nothing wrong, I just had something illegal in my pocket,” are the words first time offender Akim Smith told a Roseau magistrate as a plea of mitigation after telling the court that he was guilty of entering a restricted area and possessing a quantity of cannabis.

Smith, of Canefield, appeared before a Roseau magistrate’s court on Monday where he was fined $500 which is to be paid by December 2011 and $500 for the second charge by January 31, 2012 or he spends anther month in prison.

The facts of the case which were presented by the police prosecutor states that Smith had entered the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard, a restricted area, while the MV Emerald Princess was in port. When confronted he began quarrelling and was arrested. During a routine search police found a small bag with a “joint” in his pant pocket.

When questioned on his whereabouts on the boulevard, Smith told the magistrate that he had not entered the Bayfront, as it is widely known, but was just passing there.

I happen to know Akim Smith. His behaviour does not surprise me. As a matter of fact, anyone who knows Akim will not be surprised by the fact that he was arrested and taken to Court and charged. This young man has been trouble from day 1. Let’s all hope that this little incident will give him occasion to make a 180 degree turn in his young life.
