Martinican accused of smuggling Cubans from Dominica

arrestedA man from Martinique has been detained in St. Martin after he was accused of planning to transport 27 Cuban migrants from Dominica to the British Virgin Islands, the Associated Press (AP) is reporting.

The AP, quoting St. Martin government spokesman Eric Corbaux, said the 52-year-old Martinique man, who has not been identified, rented a catamaran and left Dominica with the migrants but stopped in St. Martin when he thought he was spotted by a plane.

Corbaux said $41,000 in cash was also found in the boat, according to the AP.

The AP reported that the police said on Tuesday they suspect the man to be part of a larger human trafficking ring that operates in the Caribbean and is believed to target migrants seeking to enter the US illegally.

I was wondering how many Cubans are in Dominica and was it a mistake.
Is this our bad luck that we were named Dominica? The name “Sunday Island” or “Trinity Island” should not have been changed. These are great names. I would have named it “Trinity Island”. If it were, this mix-up would never happen.
Those people hardly ever say Dominican Republic. They usually say, Dominicans. We should inform them about that.

DNO please verify info before placing it on your site. The trafficking in question happens between Cuba and THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC! Not THe Commonwealth of Dominica. I would humbly suggest that you remove the story before more people catch wind of it and give us an even worse rep than we already have.

Is Martinique also close to the Dominican Republic and Cuba?

Not at all! Do you not know? Martinique is situated near Dominica. Dominica is situated between Guadeloupe and Martinique. Martinique is the French West Indies as Guadeloupe.
Cuba is situated near the US as also Florida. Cubans are always trying to escape to the US. Sadly, some in overcrowded boats die on the way trying to flee Cuba.

@ One-of-the-smartest-Dcans, Asterix. Is Dominica close to Cuba and the Dominican republic? Can I rent a catamaran in Dominica? Do we speak spanish in Dominica? Wouldn’t it be easier to conceal a boat (many spanish-speaking people) of Cubans in DR than in DA?

All I have is questions since you feel that the martinican cannot be venturing far away from his tethered chain which can only reach in Dominica.

DNO its Dominican Republic which is referred to as “DOminica” not the Commonwealth of DOminica. And that should make more sense as Cuba is so close to Dominican Republic. Please verify stories before posting it and giving DA a bad image…smh

Border patrol and coast guard patrol in Puerto Rico is top notch. Only a fool would pass anywhere near P.R knowing that their activities are illegal .

Genius and your friends that gave you 2 thumbs up, please don’t make the rest of us look bad. Can’t you read and understand?

Go look up the meaning of these words and phrases; smuggle, detection, human trafficking ring, spotted by a plane, and you probably need to look up ‘targeting illegal migrants’ while you at it.

Then come back and read this article. However, just in case you still don’t comprehend, read this too; If someone is travelling to the BVI (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, anegada, Jost Van Dyke or anyone of the thirty-something islands) and they are spotted by a plane, maybe or just maybe it could be possible to discard the original plan and go straight to St. martin. The nearest island which has a freeport and is not a US territory.

Oh! and by the way, look up the words, comprehend and discard too, this home work should also include, island of the caribbean that are US territories and their location.

Dominica? Do we have that many cubans? Whilst you are at it…can you speak of the issue of Haitians coming in and sending for others to join them? This is frightening! We need better border control.

Why you all making a fuss about Haitians coming to Dominica and sending for thier family.. Is that not what most Dominicans do when they leave Dominica???

This is a serious matter. The Immigration Minister should be informed and should control this. These Haitians should go through the immigration process and be investigated. There should be an age limitation.
If they are allowed to bring all their relatives and no doubt friends to Dominica, it will not be long before they take over Dominica. It will become a Haitian State. God help Dominica that the criminal elements will not be increased.
