Massacre man fined for theft

court2Twenty-year-old Nigel George of Massacre will have to find $1,500.00 by June 30, 2013 or he will go to jail for six months.

George was arrested by police after it was reported that he stole a gold chain, a watch and a Lacoste hat from his Haitian friend, Jascam Fidelia.

He pleaded guilty to the offences although he denied stealing the watch and hat.

“Officer I saw it (the chain) by the step and I take it and so I tried to sell it,” George told the police.

He also maintained that position in court.

The magistrate admonished him and told him, “you should have returned it…that is dishonesty on your part.”

George was also called upon to “get off that old habit” since he has previous offences of a similar nature.

If he was honest he would have returned the chain. He wanted money and so he stole it in exchange for money. It appears that stealing is habitual with him.
Some people who are employed do not have that kind of money. Consider those who are unemployed. Where will they get the money to pay the Court? They should be imprisoned. If this is specifically their first time, it may rehabilitate them to shrug off their thievery habit or other criminal activities, likewise if they are not first-time offenders. They may have to serve a longer period of time. The Court should find out if they can afford to pay the fine. If they can’t, then imprison them for a certain amount of time, as deemed by the Court.
