NDFD robbery accused in custody for 9-mm pistol

Bruno during a court appearance in August 2010 for the alleged robbery of the NDFD in Roseau

A  man who is on bail for allegedly robbing the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD) in 2010 is in police custody after he was found with a 9-mm pistol.

The police have identified him as Laudrick Bruno and he was arrested in Woodfordhill on Wednesday.

He is now facing the charge of possession of an illegal firearm.

The police said he is expected to face a magistrate on Friday.

The police report that Bruno is on bail in connection for a robbery at NDFD in Roseau in broad daylight.

The incident occurred on Wednesday August 11, 2010 at about 3:30 pm when three men, which reportedly included Bruno, robbed the establishment of EC$3771.30 at gun point.

The matter is still before the courts.

  11. Who cares?
    May 18, 2012

Isn’t there too much hypocrisy around? Who pressured, chastised, and victimized Tiyani for acting within the laws of Dominica? As a Magistrate didn’t he try genuinely to make a serious dent into the increase in crimes and violence? Isn’t it true that a few culprits, who should not have been given bail by the court, however, while on bail got killed or involved in other criminal acts?

Tiyani was the villain, it seemed, for meeting culprits and communities to discuss and hopefully turn a few from involvement in criminal acts. He spoke against giving bail to those who engage in abominble criminal acts, e.g., killings, armed robberies and to deal with cases expeditiously.

He was prepared to exercise justice irrespective of whom committed the illegal acts. He was pressured by his own colleagues for being too harsh on criminals. The ECCA proved otherwise in the ‘Bubbles case’

What was the fate of the Tiyani, the Dominican brother advocating for peace and justice, advocating for obedience for the rule of law, concerned about the disrespect for our Constitution?

How many Dominicans, whom stood by Tiyani, even in his times of victimization, when all he was doing was trying to do his work as a Magistrate without fear or favour and to the best of his ability?

The UWI doctor forewarned us about the increase in criminal behaviours of all kinds and the negative social impacts. He too was ridiculed.

Many other Dominicans face the same fate for speaking out against increases in criminal activities, ‘White Colour’ or what. But until and unless the crimes hit more directly, institutions, Dominicans in general prefer to sit by, watch with mouths padlocked by the system.

Amen. I feel the same way. This generation has not had to work as hard as we did. They want instant gratification. They have a right of entitlement. Truth be told, those of us who are abroad have contributed to this by sending them the things that they want. They realize how much we struggle to earn a living. Life is difficult everywhere. At the end of the day, it boils down to choices.

    May 18, 2012

The reasons why this will continue to happen is that the Magistrate did not insist on the alledged firearm used in the robbery to be in police custody before even listening to any bail application. Any offence committed with firearm, there should be no bail, especially an armed robbery!

Bail is a dangerous thing in this country!!!!

I believe that if someone has been charged with a serious offense, like armed robbery, and bail is granted (which i don’t think it should be), if that person ccommits even a minor infraction – that person should not be released again – he/she should be LOCKED the f..k up!

I advocate for rights – and i believe people are entitled to rights – because you commit a crime, it doesn’t connote that you should be denied bail… however, bail should be more discretionary since many of these criminals are repeat offenders.

Furthermore, because the judicial system seems to be so backlogged – it would be an injustice to jail someone for an undefined period of time if the person hasn’t been convicted but just charged. And i’m sure there is a law regarding undue justice – how long someone can be held or how long before the case gets dismissed, for lack of a trial

This guy is a repeat offender. As a school boy in fourth form at North East Comprehensive he was breaking into homes and also stole one of his teachers’ laptop.

Then he was in trouble with NDFD and a shop in Pottersville. And we talk about bail?

They claim that this Allah send them to kill, decapitate people, to wage a so-called holy war on them, creating lack of peace, harmony and division in the world. Not our God! He who is a God of love has taught us to love one another; do good to those who hate us and strive for peace among people and in the world. Mohammed laws and the Koran are his man-made laws. When you die you will see where the soul of Mohammed is; by no means in Heaven for his disobedient and rebellious ways and what he has left behind, an age of unloving people, the Shariah law, terrorism and more…

He should never have been out on bail. The case should have been called a long time ago. Out on bail and he was caught with a gun. The fact he had a gun should reveal much.
Dominica is a small country and generally a peaceful one with the majority, law-abiding people and do not go around carrying guns. Why should he be carrying a gun unless he was up to no good. Was he about to commit another robbery with a gun? This man is a bad man. Thank God he was caught. We hope he will remain in prison for both those cases. He really needs the blessing and grace of God.

Are we serious? How can someone be out on bail for an alleged army robbery that occurred over 1 1/2 yrs. ago with the case still not having been tried? Now he is caught, again in possession of an illegal firearm. I doubt this would have happened if the case had been heard as expeditiously, as it should have been. We critisize our police but maybe the judiciary, and the legal profession have even more to answer for!
For goodness sake, we are awash with lawyers in this country. We have more of them than we have docotors and one wonders sometimes if they are more of a hindrance than a help in the administration of justice

Them lawyers will do what it takes to get them going free…..because they see only money, they will do crime again steal money from poor people and then use to pay them over and over again, so the more they out doing crime the more the lawyers can make off them so they will ensure they get them to be on the streets to make money….not thinking of the betterment of society or the country. Maybe when it hits home one day(God forbid)they may operate differently. and these crimes shouldn’t have bail to them…..our laws need revision!!!!! God help us!
