UPDATE: No arrests in Portsmouth stabbing death; victim identified

The Indian River Bridge where the murder took place.

Police have still not made any arrests in the murder of Clement  ‘Johnson’ James, but according to police spokesman Inspector Claude Weekes, someone is assisting the authorities with the investigations.

James is the latest murder victim in Dominica, bringing the number to four over the past six days. He was fatally stabbed on Monday afternoon at about 3:40pm at the Indian River Bridge in Portsmouth, following a confrontation with another man.

He was initially taken to the Portsmouth Hospital and later transferred to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he died.

“He was stabbed and succumbed to his injuries,” Weekes said.

Meanwhile, 32-year-old Goodwill resident Omara Smalls (formerly Mwanga Freeman) was gunned down on High Street in Roseau at about 9:30 p.m last Wednesday. No one has been arrested for his killing.

A few hours later the following day, a mother was taken into custody for allegedly killing her two daughters, a five-year-old girl and a two-month-old baby. They were allegedly stabbed to death.

Well, at the end of all of this, this mans’ life style is still not tolerated on this island, i don’t think that this man should have lost his life like this, we can’t be judge but of ourselves
but yes this life style shouldn’t be tolerated or excused at any level that is if we are still embrace this island as a God fearing country and if we are still considering ourselves as a God fearing peoples
We are becoming too tolerant of these kinds of behavior because of some of these elites in society who choose to go against nature.
Where is our identity as Dominicans ,one of the pollutants (Americanization) with all these soap opera and the break down in social standards and moral ethics
We really need to get back to basics

    Reply To KarKabef:

I am taken by the level of your hypocricy.

How do you know about the location and patron of this so-called ‘House of Obeah’?

Yes, I know, someone told you about it.

    Different View Point:
All these violence, I think it’s because we are human. We are evolving. We are able to survive on this because of our natural ability to adapt.

The strong prey on the weak. It has been happening from the begining.

This is nothing new to Dominica. Can anyone remember what happen to Ted Honnychurch, Police Officer Lugay and many others? Do you know about Gallaway, or Pokosion?

    Follow my lead and read.

The difference is time. This is 2010, hence we are more informed. We can sit behind our computers and critize, even when its progressive. We can also participate it cordial and informative disccussions with the click of a mouse.

So, lets use time (2010) to give the Police Department a chance to conduct a proper investigation. They’re quite capable. I really do trust our Police Force. They always get their man!

Come on Dominicans!!! Come on!! Stand up for something!! Stand up for justice! Please police please do your job bring this killer before the court. And don’t forgot the many other unsolved cases. No case is too old! Don’t let another murderer escape just like that. Indian river bridge? Are you serious? I know there are many witnesses. Please don’t let this killer escape. It could just be you, your child, your relative, a friend of yours next. Don’t be intimidated. Dominicans will be behind you! If you saw this crime, be a witness against this heinous scum that is destroying our Country, and our Country’s reputation. These murders have a lot of implications and can very well affect your livelihood. Remember, Dominica revenue is much more dependent on tourism than ever before – banana is no more what it use to be.

For the people who want to cover-up crime to protect Dominica’s reputation, I don’t believe in that. Decrease the murder rate, decrease crime. I will not advise my non-Dominicans friends to visit Dominica, when innocent people are being killed, assaulted etc, and get away so often (I know this case is very young and I hope that someone will be arrested and charged, hopefully as I write this). We better open our eyes and see that for a country as small as Dominica with a small population, the crime rate is extremely high. For what I hear going on, I feel safer her in America. I was just looking at this website (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur-crime-murders) and Dominica is listed among the top 100 most recent murders by country! When you think they are not looking? They are. What can you hide in this communication age? Just clean up your acts and nothing to worry about.

I don’t live in Dominica anymore, but I knew Johnson – this guy was always quiet and never a trouble-maker, and I am confident that he was innocent, and that this murderer just killed him over some nonsense!

it is evident that we are nearing the end of time. the bible makes it clear that the love of many has waxed cold (Matthew 24:10-12) nation need to turn to God. God is calling a people back to Him. Pray and repentance is what the nation needs. as citizens of our country let us join together in prayer for our Government and nation.
God will hear us if we pray. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 say, if my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, i will hear from heaven and heal their land. we serve a forgiven God who wants to hear from us. as Christians let us make it our duty to spend some time in prayer for our families and love ones. God bless Dominica the land that i adore

My condolences to the family of Johnson

This island has turned away from God. We elect Godless men. We are in bed with Godless nations- nations who do not serve our God. We receive gifts and we do not know where they came from. Read the Old Testament my people. We need to reevaluate our lives, our homes, our leaders and our country. We have to humble ourselves, pray and turn from our wicked ways. We can fool men, but we can not fool God. Corruption and crime go hand in hand. Take the cover from off your eyes. Open your eyes and see… a corrupt government is elected by a corrupt people! A corrupt people do not know God. Wake up Dominica! Wake up!

@Dude: Dominicans crime rate is by far the lowest in the caribbean. I think the police are doing a very good jjob at solving crimes. Dominicas crime issue should have no bearing on tourist arrivals. If that be the case no one would even Fly over JA,TT St. Lucia to name a few. When the peolice said that someone is assisting it means that they have a suspect or a person of question and at following the process. Before charges can be laid they have to enjure that the cover the reasonable doubt issue so that they do not loose their case over procedures. Have this been the case with the freeman guy and the webb guy (two persons eitheir killed or were killers recently) would not have been out of jail. So get your straight ..

Dominicans listen, I live on an island in the caribean, and just a few years ago there was a mass murder of several tourist. Nowadays tourist a looking at the history of an island before they pack their clothes and travel for vacation. on this particular island where i live has an international airport, but you must also remember it also has bad history of murdering visitors. Now if this kind of foolishnes is happening in D.A. with murders of local people and no one is arrested within days that say to the visitors that law enforcement is ineffective and need training. Mr. P.M. if you read this comment take into consideration advertisement of a country is most effective by word of mouth, friend telling friend and that is european telling their european friends etc.So Dominicans support youer local police. Police work at developing the peoples trust and they will help you solve crimes and the history of our lovely Dominica wil be inviting to people around the world. There are alot of people that want to come to Dominica to visit, please give them more of a reason to come.

Imagine Dominicans out of comments. Alas, are we getting immunized or we just confused how a country like ours can move from a couple killings per year to 4 in one week. Dominica needs Jesus, we need to repent on behalf of our country before it gets worse. Someone said we will soon be like Jamaica, lets rebuke that and pray for deliverance.

People overseas respected Dominica for its law and no nonesense handling of criminals. I’ve heard foreigners applaud Dominica for its serious law enforcement. What has happened? I was in Dominica in 2007-2008 and was outraged to see murders walking out of the court house after being given a slap on the wrist. If our authorities do not begin to crack down on criminals, I am afraid that the PM’s threat to the Melvin Hall staff will be unnecessary, because visitors will not approach our shores. The PM will have to fire himself, the entire ministry of legal affairs, and all those who are supposed to execute the laws of our Country.

Six murders in four days? Are we serious?

We Need an up to date homicide unit in Dominica…The government should hire personnel to come in and train these officers on how to properly solve homicide cases. These murders should not be going unsolved! Enforce the Death penalty as well!…TSK TSK, why are we as dominican men so infatuated with gangster lifestyle? Go to school and give back to your community…Stop being foolish!

The story goes that the victim just came from roseau and was going into portsmouth to pay his bill
This young troublemaker meets the man and tells him all ‘batty man must die”
hits him with a stick, when the man tries to defend himself, the troublemaker stabbed him

    This is just really upsetting
I know the man they killed, a quiet man. not even a young man. a sick tired man. killed over nothing.
just because the young man find he staring at him.

The devil has gotten a hold of this land. Too much poverty, corruption, obeah, black magic, frustration, selfishness, greed, envy, jealousy etc etc going on in the land. Although it is against the law, prostitution is legal and rampant. Man fighting man for spanish that is not even theirs. The house of obeah on the stretch in Castle Bruce is the one of the few businesses booming right now. You have to make an appointment just to get to see the witch doctor. People does not understand that this man does not have the answer to their problems. On the other hands, even police and other high ranking people in society going there under the cover of darkness.
