Allan Felix of Roseau is to pay $180 forthwith as compensation for a pail of pig snout which he stole from Malcolm Stevens and Sons on Friday or he will spend one month in jail.
He is also to pay a fine of $700 by March 31, 2010 or spend six months in prison for the theft.
Felix, a River Street resident, pleaded guilty to theft before magistrate Ossie Lewis today and blamed his predicament on his girlfriend whom he said is a cocaine addict.
“I use to be a strong user but I stopped in 2006… What happen is that I fall in love with a woman that smoking cocaine…”
According to him, he happened to go home with $180 that someone had given him to purchase a pail of pig snout, but his girlfriend had lifted the money from his pocket while he was asleep and bought cocaine with it.
He said that when he woke up only $21 was left in his pocket.
“My girlfriend smoke all the money… I just go and take a pail of pig snout by Stevens. The man (bus driver) was after me with an iron ready to beat me. …I was so ashamed…but I know to myself I stop taking drugs… I have a coal pit burning coal in Cochrane…,” Felix said.
Felix pleaded with the magistrate not to send him to prison and promised that he would pay a fine of any amount.
“Even if I have to pay $ 500,000 I will pay it cause I stop smoking drugs,” Felix said.
Meanwhile, the complainant, Malcolm Stevens who was present in court, requested that the magistrate warn the defendant not to interfere with him or his business.
“He’s always very suspicious. One time he came into my business, take a soft drink in my cooler, drink it and walk out,” Stevens said.
The defendant was formally warned by Magistrate Lewis .
