Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he remains optimistic that a government initiative to deal with crime in Dominica will bear fruit.

The government has launched the Community Outreach Programme on crime and violence allowing for meetings with various stakeholders.

“What we are trying to do is embrace everybody is who is prepared to make a meaningful contribution. That charge is being led by the Attorney General and the Minister of National Security who are going around the communities…to curb any violence or criminal behaviour within our society,” he said.

Sure Mr PM we will try to take you serious…  You address a nation saying that you are above the law.Dominicans are afraid to say which party they are supporting, schools kids are worst behaved now,the firebomb happened, crimes in high places, the parliament is a mess and you want to talk crime? what is your definition of crime? To me crime doesn’t always mean assault or theft etc.Crimes are wide scale..so what now? you have foreigners flourishing bcuz they have money, you have local people being worried about selling a loaf of bread or something by the street bcuz they don’t have a vendors license, but yet you have so many young men and women in Dominica driving around without drivers permit, helmets, insurance, and no respect for human lives…Go back to the drawing board enforce laws for all not just for one set of people!Tired of premature speeches.worthless.Politicians I tell you will say and do anything for ,money and power..Practice what you preach or don’t preach at all!

I just hope that the seeds fall into good soil and take root. This is not a complete solution. I think you will have to combine that with harsh punishment.

Just imagine if all Dominicans took responsibility for the safety of every tourist.
Imagine if they were all given friendly, courteous, generous, and warm welcomes.
This reputation could spread virally around the world on social media and we would all gain from expanding tourism spending in restaurants, hotels, tours, arts and crafts. We would stand out in the Caribbean.
More than this Community Outreach Programme.
We need an emergency, non-partisan summit that all can rally around. We need all community leaders including all political parties, the media, religious leaders, business leaders, calypsonians, etc. to rally around a multi-faceted action plan.
It will take time to turn attitudes around and for our reputation to spread. But it would bring long term jobs, economic gains, more social cohesion, and greater security for everyone.

King Dice in his calypso “send me” made mention to “even if am guilty to send me”. Which am sure we all know what he mean, he Dice is now the only man to be a five time holder of the crown. In my view he was saying don’t blame the messanger but did you get the message. I believe in taking the message to better my own personal life from whoever the message comes from because at the end of the day who not living up to what is right will be dealt with accordingly but I will be safe.

I once called the police when my neighbor and his stepson were threatening to go at each other with a knife and a cricket bat in the middle of the road. Luckily they were just drunk and talking big, but we didn’t know it wouldn’t get serious, and they were still at it a half hour later and the police hadn’t shown up yet.

I called the police back and they said they were waiting for someone to pick them up in a vehicle; they didn’t have a car.

Then we hear the story that during the murder at Pagua Bay awhile back, the Marigot police station had broken phones and so couldn’t be reached during the attack. I can’t take any “crime strategy” seriously unless it will fix these easily fixable problems, and put more trained officers on the street. People do whatever they think they can get away with.

Dominica will be almost crime free when corrupt politicians and corrupt police officers, are weeded out of the system. Presently there seem to be too many of both, no wonder this crime issue is escalating.

It’s hard to tell people to do this or do that when they see something different from you. People are not going to listen to folks that are not an example to them. When young people hear those in authority talk and act lawlessly, they will more likely do what you do instead of what you tell them to do.

To fight/combat crime we need people who themselves respect the law to talk to the people. In other words we need law abiding examples, not people who are themselves rogues.

It is truly amazing what the D/can population tolerates. It is an obvious observation that the popluation generally are pro corruption as they allow it to exist.I guess it emanates from the profound poverty hence no one on the island is immune nor desire to create the conditions for immunity to set in let alone take root. It can be considered pie in the sky. good luck onthat Mr. initiator or willful participant.

this is a very good move on the part of the government, but i think that this meeting needs to be taken to the public meaning,,,to the street where u can meet everybody, there are people that will not enter any building to listen to any meeting at any point in time but if the meeting is held on the streets people will stop and listen.cause you don’t want to talk to a selected few you want everybody on board…

3rd Paragraph of Letter from the Cabinet Secretary RE: Community Meetings Addressing Crime, Violence and Anti-Social Behavior – March 22, 2012

“Each meeting will be attended by a panel comprised of some or all of the Attorney General, the Minister for National Security( or his representative), one other member of the Cabinet: The Chief Of Police (or his representative); a representative of the Dominica Association/Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DAIC/DHTA); a representative of the Welfare Division and representative of the National Youth Council”

Why an opposition representative is not included on the Panel? How are you going to achieve that goal when you showing division from the beginning?

This is an opportunity to show genuine and pro-active leadership by including an Opposition Representative on the panel as you move around the country. The Fight against Criminal Activities in Everybody’s business.

Don’t turn your optimism into disappointments

MR SKERRIT FIGHTING CRIME IS ONE OF THE BEST POLICY IN ANY SOCIETY BECAUSE IT IS NOT ONLY FOR A PARTICULAR GROUP OF PEOPLE IT IS FOR EVERY ONE.
THE MAIN REASON WHY PEOPLE BLAME THE GOV’T FOR CRIMES IS SIMPLY BECAUSE GOV’T HAVE NEVER ALLOW THE POPULATION TO KNOW IN WHAT MANNER THEY WILL BE PROTECTED AFTER THEY REPORT A CRIME….SOME PEOPLE WANT TO REPORT CRIME BUT THEY WANT TO BE PAID BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY JOB NOR ANY FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM GOV’T WHICH I PERSONALLY THINK THAT IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO GET PAID TO REPORT CRIME.
I TAKE MY RESPONSIBILITY TO SAY THAT I AM WILLING TO CONDONE CRIME ACCORDING TO WHY AND TO WHO THE CRIME WAS COMMITTED AGAINST.YOU HAVE MADE A LAW TO PROTECT POLITICIANS WHY NOT MAKE A LAW TO PROTECT THOSE WHO REPORT CRIMES?

Community involvement is important but not enough. We may not have the money immediately but you need to speak to a broader strategy which will involve reviewed laws, forensic investigation capacities, more mobility and enhanced police presence, an emergency system including a national number that works,a new prison (too many prisoners go off lightly partly out of consideration of capacity); encouragement of business security enhancements (duty free for security devices)

  35. April 14, 2012

Oh Realy!!!! New Strategy huh!! How bout starting off by creating jobs for these people, have more day and night recreational facilities. Many of these violent crimes are commited by persons who are unemployed and having nothing better to do. People stealing cheese because they hungry. If they go to the red clinic you give them $500 and no job…when that money finish they broke…maybe they return to the red clinic but you gave him last month..I dont think you will give every hungry/unemployed person a monthly allowance from the clinic because this is not a job…these are just hand outs…then what happen? They go back and thief.

Please provide us with jobs so we can have our own daily bread. Bring in serious investors…dont run them off as we have been doing in the past
