Point Michel man punished for raiding bar

Tony Mitchel of Point Michel has been fined for stealing a number of beverages from a popular bar in that area on Carnival Monday.

Mitchel, who appeared before Magistrate Candia George yesterday, said that he was guilty of stealing a bottle of Red Label whiskey, Absolute Vodka, several bottles of Sprite and Fruta along with packets of Benson and Hedges and Dunhill cigarettes from the establishment while the owners were away.

The defendant had also taken over $100 cash. The total cost of stolen items went well over $500.

He also pleaded guilty to causing malicious damage to a wooden panel door and PVC pipe in the building.

The incident occurred between 5 a.m. and noon after the proprietors Vincent and Melvina Boyer had secured and left the bar.

Upon returning at noon they noticed the top of the wooden panel door and a pipe which brought water into the bar were damaged.

The defendant was found at  Champagne after someone had reported seeing him walking up the road with a bag.

“Ok I will bring all you where the bag is,” he told police after first denying the crime.

All the items were recovered.

Michel was fined $800 which is to be paid by May 30, 2011 or he will face three months in jail. He will also pay $425 Compensation to the proprietors of the bar for the broken door and pipe. He will make this payment by March 31 or face three months in prison.

“This appears to be your first offense, that is the only reason why I am not sending you to Stockfarm,” the magistrate told Mitchel.

i understand persons should be punsihed but i know this young man personally and i feel bad for the him and his siblings. their mom left them, went to England and never filed for anyone one of them. his sis struugled her way until she left the state to some other caribbean country and his younger bro was fortunate enough to be with a much older well known woman. But i always see him as the black sheep . this is no excuse why he did what he did but to parents out there please stay and be of support to your kids. if your purpose for travelling is to make life beter then ur kids must be included. it hurts me because he is not a trouble maker but lately he has been parcticing theft. apparently he does it when he is really in need of. he has been caught and pte michel persons just leave him alone . i feel bad to read about this.

First-time offender? He may have stolen previously but was never caught. I do think that three months is insufficient. Where will he get the money from to compensate the owners? The fact that he stole it appears that he may be a poor person.
Many of these criminals – thieves, if not all of them are in dire need of rehabilitation. I state, give them Jesus! No thief or murderer will ever enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
God is merciful. There are two sides to people – good and bad. People in themselves are not really bad but that they followed bad company, bad example and their evil ways which tarnished their image. These are weak of spirit and allow themselves to succumb to Satan’s temptations.
Dominica is a small country. I am a confident person. My vision for Dominica, for its residents’ happiness, peace and security is that something should be done about those criminals so that crimes will be eradicated from Dominica.
My confident in Dominica is such I also view that Dominica should set the stage and example to other islands and the rest of the world that they could emulate. I certainly wished that this would be a possibility. Dominica would have much to be proud of.
