Police condemn spate of violence

police do not crossThe Police have condemned a recent spate of violence in Dominica, some of which targeted women.

Sergeant Pelham Jno Baptiste of the Public Relations Committee of the Dominica Police force said such behavior will not be tolerated in the country.

Recently there has been a spate of violent crimes on the island which left one dead and three suffering serious bodily injuries.

“The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force would like to publicly condemn, in the strongest way, all acts of violence in Dominica,” Jno Baptiste said.

He urged the public to avoid using violence to solve problems.

“While conflict among citizens at every level of society will exist, violence is not the way to resolve those conflicts,” he said.

He called on everyone to continue reporting incidents of abuse “and to assist the police department in our efforts to prevent such violent incidents.”

On October 31, Dean Mitchel was attacked and chopped with a cutlass in Newtown. He suffered serious injuries and Mandella Gordon of Goodwill has been charged for the attempted murder in the matter.

On November 3, Triscia Riviere, 26, of Stockfarm was reportedly killed by her boyfriend. Thirty-year-old Rodman Moses Lewis was charged with murder in the killing.

On November 21, Del Vidal of Petite Savanne was shot and robbed of a gold chain by two masked men in Roseau. He suffered a gunshot wound to his upper right thigh.

On November 23, Bianca Blanchard was viciously attacked and chopped with a cutlass by her boyfriend at her workplace in Roseau. Kurt Edison Pemberton, of Victoria Street Newtown, has been charged with attempted murder in the incident.

/naThe political narrative have to change. Too much hatred is in the air like evil spirits looking for people to destroy. The media and the people must start the conversation with a goal to stop misbehavior. When you listen to Q95 and Kairi you realize that hatred and wickedness are rampant. We are being conditioned to hate each other. When you see the comments posted on DNO you see the regression in civic behavior. For example people were saying that Tony Astaphan should face a firing squard. You see posting of hatred, wickedness, lies, insults and name calling. Dominicans abroad want to return home, but are reluctant because of the unsafe environment that exist right now. Look at the hatred that is being propagated towards the speaker, making her a marked woman. You have to ask ourselves why? Is this necessary? Saying things against the PM wife and unborn daughter became quite fashionable. Is that the Dominica we want? Yet we claim to be Christians. Is that Christian behavior…

I gave my cousin an expensive watch as a gift. The same week his house was broken into and some of his belongings were STOLEN including the wrist watch. He called the corps and told them he had a suspect. That suspect had previously threatened my cousin. Police came with nothing to take fingerprints. The alleged suspect lived just opposite my cousin’s house – Police refused to even question the suspect. Then, they turn around and ask for the public’s help in fighting crimes. Can you believe such a thing? My cousin is a quiet man. Me,? That robber would catch so much hells he’d have to relocate. I told my cousin next time don’t call these inefficient policeboys.

The police in dominica is more busy to arrest people that are swearing to remove their stress & marijuana planters than work to eradicate high level crimes…my personal experience with the police in dominica ,my brother uses physical violence on his wife many times,he is the police officers buddy /friend no matter what the lady would complain but he was never arrested ,,after many years the lady took him to court ,,these police officers in their conversation are saying a lot of nasty things about the lady, this is the type of police dominica is feeding in the police stations..if a police is against your aggressor your complain will have an out come,if not you’ll be on your own…The gov’t should never allow police officers to work in their village of birth nor stay in police stations for over 6 months, they become friends with people and crime increases…i witnessed a police officer accusing a down syndrome child who was innocent because i was present she didn’t do what they…

It behoves me to understand, how the police keep spewing nonsense out of their mouths. Everyone is responsible for their safety but the police has a duty to ensure that we are safe. Lately, we see women who insist in remaining in violent relationships, get the results of bad decisions. I cannot blame that on the police because these women need to make their own decisions. How about when they do decide to leave that they don’t get the support of the police? Some women make ninety nine hundred trips to the police station with no results. Police making comments like “it’s her man. She will go back’. Even when the court gives restraining order, you cannot get a police to enforce. Stop sitting around saying what everyone else is not doing and start doing something. Increase patrol! Speed up response time! Take reports seriously! Stop bellyaching and work!

Lawyers, Magistrates and Judges aare to be blamed because the lawyers will say they are first offenders, they did not wasted the courts time and also asks the court for mercy and they fall for it. They know what they did was wrong, they did the crime they should do hard time.

To DNO, could you please stop using the word chopped? We are human beings not insignificant pieces of meat. Delivering the message with civility matters. Words along the lines of; assaulted, injury suffered/inflicted, grievous, etc.

      November 28, 2015

Well, a cutlass was used. It is used for chopping. That was the intention of those who committed the crime. Anyone would think so. It could not be watered-done. This is what they did. What other word would be suitable?

What the women of Dominica must do to help protect themselves against depraved men is to arm themselves with pepper spray.

What the Police should be doing is to proactively solve crimes and take actions to prevent crimes.

What about the incidents in the east of the island? Not one policeman came they said “no man power”.
During a pass election the song Something is happening was blasted all over , something is really happening and it’s not good. That village had two (2) cutlass attack a hand was almost cut off.

Our country is in crisis mode and everyone has thrown their hands up in the air. I speak with young persons who have no regard for life and our society has lost compassion, love, unity and togetherness. I know that’s not who we are and I pray God almighty have mercy on us and help and bless DA. It’s very disheartening to be in DA right now.

its one thing to condemn the acts but what measures are you going to take to decrease the level of these violent acts?
one thing needs to change for sure and that’s when a family or community member call the police to intervene when there is a fight or some domestic problem the police usual response is that they do not interfere in domestic matters. but when someone is killed or injured in this domestic matter the police arrive.why? the police needs to intervene before situations get out of control.

They should not be released on bail. If they knew that it could probably be a deterrent. They get away too easily with crimes, thanks to their attorney who plead, this is their first time and they did not waste the Court’s time. This is so foolish. Only in Dominica you say? One would say, so what? I am certain some some premeditated it. Therefore, they must pay for it.

Actions speak louder than words…..the judicial system in Dominica needs to send a strong message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

    • The Real Facts
      November 28, 2015

Some years in prison could be a solution. The punishment should fit the crime. However, it is too bad that some take advantage of a higher court and may either be acquitted or their sentence reduced. This is why they continue committing such crimes. If the authorities expect to decrease crimes, when they are sentenced and with the appropriate amount of years, they should not be allowed to appeal. They are making a joke out of Dominica’s Court System.
If they think they can get away with crimes/murders or attempted ones, one day they will find out that they cannot get away from God’s eternal justice.

condemning it not going to change a damn thing, unless stricter laws are implemented and the police and officials actually prosecute people and exercise the law….
