Eighteen police officers from the Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda police forces are now better equipped to survive in hostile jungle environments after completing a RSS Jungle and survival course.

The officers all received participation certificates at a graduating ceremony on Friday morning. The course which was funded by the International Narcotic and Law Enforcement Affairs of the United States Embassy ran from the 16th to 25th September.

Course officer ASP Tyrone White said that the objective of the course was to test the ability and resourcefulness of participants.

“The course was divided into two phases. Phase 1 being the jungle phase and phase 2 of which the last 3 days were set aside was primarily the survival stage,” he said.

The participants received training in map reading, jungle hazards and first aid amongst other topics. They were also placed in the mountains where they had to survive by improvising and using what the environment had to offer.

White encouraged the students to  stay in touch with each other and function as a team.

In the meantime, Superintendent in Charge Central Division David Andrew said “build the partnerships that you have created, fortify the relationships and boost the linkages so that we can enhance the integration process that is so necessary as we are thinking of being one block as the Caribbean area. You are forerunners as you are making history to ensure that integration process builds and builds to success.”

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Security, Steve Hyacinth, encouraged the graduates to use their skills as often as they can.

“You are now better prepared to execute search and rescue missions in the jungle in the event of any emergencies,” he said. “You have gained an understanding and improved your navigational skills and these were tested under difficult and extreme circumstances but you survived.  Training must be put to good use. You must use your training continually otherwise the skills that you have acquired will be lost. Be willing to share your skills and knowledge with others and in a given circumstances be ready to step forward and handle the situation with a level of efficiency and effectiveness.”

I can imagine if some military guys offered 3-4 day survival course in the jungle and hired normal marketing company to advertise it over the internet, it might become real attraction for survivalists, prepers and other extreme tourists interested in getting survival skills or jungle combat knowledge…
