Police put brakes on ‘cash for gold’

Police are reporting that they have put the brakes on a business that has caused some concerns in Dominica.

Top cop Cyril Carette said the so-called ‘cash for gold’ business had been the center of concern for law enforcement for some time.

He told a press conference recently that while the business is not illegal, most of the gold sold in the booming business came from stolen items.

It is reported that Venezuelans on the island have been encouraging locals to sell their unwanted gold for money.

According to Carette, police were able to clamp down on these Venezuelans and their cash for gold business with help from the Financial Intelligent Unit (FIU), Customs and the Labour Division.

“We also ensured that there was a reduction in the gold for cash going around Dominica and we decided to put a choke-hold on this gold for cash and we have seen a significant reduction in Venezuelans coming around Dominica to buy gold from people. And you would know that most of the gold that they bought from persons were stolen property. Most persons could not identify the property because they were so seriously damaged. We have put a dent in them and prevent them from doing that kind of activity in Dominica,” he said.

He said to undertake such transactions, the proper documentation are needed “but these persons never had the proper documentation to do those types of transactions and we had to put some measures in place”.

Ha, and a pat on the back… 1970s policies in a quickly modernizing world. Proper laws have to be put in place by EDUCATED experiences individual to stem complicated schemes, money laundering and other modern threats. I’m so turned off by this rubbish. Prevention is better than cure. I bet u those venezuelans have Dominica passports.

When the Venezuelans return to their country they should produce proper documents of purchase of gold paraphernalia or other items and will have to pay duty on the total cost. If immigration in that country is honest they will be requested.

Not knowing is a bad thing. Last bell at the market had gold at $1589US an ounce. Why are you selling you gold people? Hold on to them. All the currencies are on the sidewalk crying…while gold is sitting pretty smoking a cigar. I just had an 18 carat gold chain that I bought 10 years ago from Martinique for 400US appraised for 1100US. Hold on to the gold. Gold will pick at 2100US an ounce – trust me.

If you decide to sell, please check the current market value on the web, and then bargain from there…

How is it that Melville Hall Immigratiom was not mentioned along with the F.I.U , Customs and Labout Division?
Let it be know that the Immigration at Melville Hall Airport has played a great part in bringing this “cash for gold” trade to a stop.
    (Oversight I guess).

Documents or not that business of ‘money for gold’ should stop all together because having the right documents will not stop the young guys from pulling chains from defenseless women or from robbing homes.

      December 30, 2011

      @ Woman

The sense of this is they will not be able to sell it without proper documentation, to ensure that it was not stolen property. If the buyers are honest they will request legal documentation.

    It’s not illegal
There’s no staute that says it is
Unless they can somehow write up some tax0evasion charge there is nothing they can do.

      December 29, 2011

Of course there is … silly sausage.

It may not be illegal to buy gold, but it is illegal to do it as a Venezuelan without the proper papers. There is the STOP.

Al Capone was not imprisoned for all his violence and general gangster duties …. but for tax evasion.

There is always a way to stop crime. If only people would think and not give up so easy … such as you.

I know what Al Capone was arrested on, he’s my hero

      • Kucolukes
        December 29, 2011

Before you call someone names you should think first.
If you are suggesting that there is tax evasion then I beg to ask what taxes are they evading?
Taxes are paid on income earned over a certain threshold, or services rendered.
First you will have to “PROVE” that this is a business, and that they are actually earning an income.
For all you know they could just be buying gold because they like Gold. :-D
So unless the zezea we have as a top cop can prove that they have
        1. Have a registered business,
        2. That they are buying gold as a business
        3. That they are making over the threshold for income tax
        4. That they are making over the threshold for Vat
Then it is tax evasion, but…them police not smart enough to prove that so don’t bet on it

    December 28, 2011

So top cop some questions to think of starting with whats the charge without the proper documentation to do this type of business in DA. It is illegal to do this type of business without the proper documentation. Most people could not identify their gold …in that case were there people that could identity their gold. What is the consequence. Buying and selling stolen property now thats a serious issue. Mr. top cop i just love to read in between the lines everytime you talk!!!!!!

Didn’t realize we had a financial investigating unit in Dominica when so much money laundering took place from 204 to recently. The majority of the 50 questions to the infamous lawyer in D/ca had much to do with money laundering. The majority of the passport deals show financial irregularities and we have a financial investigating unit.

Take it easy MR CUMCUM do not CUM too fast 99days for the bad guys and one day for the police we understand your frustration and or your agender but police work is not CSI or monkey business certain investigations can take weeks, Days, or even years to complete and the police do not have to give out information every second I know how hungry some persons are for hot,hot breaking news, but thats not how police investigations and police work are carried out sometimes too much information can hinder the very case the police is persuing and leads can go cold. We are so spoiled in Dominica we demand from the police certain information from the police which in my opinion the police should not disclose for fear of jepordizing their investigations. Look and learn how we do it in the U.S.A. When certain reporters asked or inquire of law enforcement about sensitive information, “THE LONG AND SHORT ANSWER IS,”NO COMMENT”. I am waiting for our law enforcement units start behaving like that!been there done that.
