Police warns against protestors blocking roads; several sentenced last week

A road block. Carette says road blocking is illegal.

(DNO) Police have frowned on recent protest actions which have included the blockage of public roads and have guaranteed that all will be done in order to bring such offenders to justice.

Deputy Police Chief Cyril Carette, who spoke to media today at the Police Headquarters, said that these actions are sometimes done without thinking and could have dire consequences.

“Lives could be lost, the ambulance could be travelling and it’s blocked… You could have the fire service going to a fire and just because the fire truck cannot pass then you find property is destroyed. So we have to take those things into consideration when we are going to take such action.

“… We are once again urging persons to desist from engaging in such illegal acts, it’s a violation of the law and we will take whatever action necessary within the law to ensure that persons are brought o justice whether at the time they committed the offenses or subsequently. We need to understand that when we do those things that there are consequences. And some persons do not think before they do those things. We need really to resolve all our issues by peaceful means,” Carette said.

Carette strengthened his comments by mentioning the case of five Calibishie males – which include one juvenile – who were charged last Friday for their participation in a recent Calibishie protest.

According to Carette, on May 6, 2010, the five males appeared before the Magistrate’s Court in Wesley on charges of disobeying the public order act, being a public nuisance and obstruction under the traffic act.

They all pleaded guilty. The adults were bond over to keep the peace, in the sum of $1,000 for two years, in default, six months in prison. This means that they should not commit any offense within a two-year time span or they will either pay the said cash sum or go to jail for six months.

The juvenile will reappear at the magistrate’s court on June 23, where decision will be given following the receipt of a probation report on him.

Carette reiterated: “They were warned to desist from engaging in such illegal acts… We must talk of this sort of decadence that we having in society.  When we look at what is happening over the world today, we do not want those things to come to Dominica. We do not want such violence to come to Dominica.  And we will do all in our powers to stamp out such violence in Dominica.”

JUSTICE IS SERVED, DOMINICANS SHOULD LEARN HOW TO PROTEST PEACEFULLY WITH THE INTERVENTION OF THE POLICE.

    May 16, 2010

but why they going all out talking about protests and making all these threats? since when dominica police serious about crime prevention? what’s with all the anti-protest talk by the police?

did they receive a directive from higher up?

are they anticipating more dissatisfaction from the people on this next level?

is this a way of scaring them people they would think of doing something bigger and on a national level?

    Stay Tuned folks…

I am a suppoter of the Law and the if they arrest some they should arrest all. the double standard being set by the police will back fire one day. i hope the pal rep. for that community can show his face there seeing that the Labor party publicly stated that he did not have to campain in Calibishie.
once again we have seen how we are treated on the next level.

Mr Carette is right to raise this issue. Obviously the people involved in doing this don’t think of the implications of their stupidity. What if an ambulance in an emergency situation get stuck at one of those barriers and the patient dies as a result of the delay in getting him/her to hospital? or fire and emergency services get held up, would the perpetrators be willing to bear the responsibilities of the implications of such stupidity? This type of behaviour is anti-social and disorderly by nature and designed to terrorise other Dominicans who believe in abiding by the rule of law. These mindless minorities should learn to behave more responsibly and punished for their stupidity.

This practice is so anti modern day that I wonder when it’s going to stop. We need to wake up and fiind new ways to air our grievances. If my moda or fada loses her/his life because of this nonesense there’ll be hell to pay.

  16. May 14, 2010

Okay, when it was Kalinagoes protesting they were stupid. Now its Nigga what are they? perfectly intelligent?

  17. May 14, 2010

Good that they are paying a price for the road blocking.let’s just demonstrate in a peaceful way.

I Like That!!!!! These people too wicked. Charge all of them!

    May 14, 2010

It is important that the Police continue those cases so that justice can appear to be done. When I heard that a Kalinago man had been charged for blocking the road some time ago I wondered why just him. But Calibishie has come up and I suppose we will see similar cases in St. Joseph, Coulibistrie and other communities where roads were blocked because the police took pictures and video in all of those areas. If it is illegal, not some but all those who do it should pay.

    May 14, 2010

Finally! Because allu get nuff maypuis on DNO for arresting the carib guy allu go after the Calibishie guys too. Now go and get those in Layou that did the same thing and so on. Equal justice under the law. Thanks DNO for giving us a forum to demand equal justice under the law. Better late than never but at least the police can now say they treating everyone the same and not only the malayway. The Hon. Karkabeff waiting patiently to see if the layou people will be prosecuted too. After all, Mr..Carette himself was present during the demonstration so he cant say the roads were not blocked or he has no idea who did it.
