Portsmouth native vying for Broward County Court judge

McLawrence

Attorney F. Jahra McLawrence is a candidate for Broward County Court Judge, Group 26.  Election Day is August 24, 2010.

As a judge, McLawrence will provide the respectful courtroom atmosphere that all Broward County citizens deserve in judicial proceedings.

McLawrence operates a law firm in Fort Lauderdale, and has practiced in the areas of civil and criminal litigation throughout the State of Florida over the past eight years.  He is a veteran of the United States Navy, and a graduate of both Florida A&M University and the University of Florida Levin College of Law.  He has taught as an adjunct professor at Florida International University, and lectured for the Florida Bar.  Within the community, he has conducted legal seminars at various churches and schools, and mentored youth in a summer justice program.  He continues to volunteer with the NAACP and the Urban League.

Throughout his years practicing, attorney McLawrence has applied his diverse life experiences, military attention-to-detail approach, and scholarly legal knowledge in representing more than 1,000 people from various counties in Florida.

McLawrence is running to join those Broward County judges that uphold the integrity and independence of the Bench, and who recognize the importance of treating all people with dignity, fairness, and respect.  He looks forward to meeting and gaining the support of the community during this campaign.

He is dedicated to providing a more balanced judgment for today’s Broward.

Greetings to all my fellow Dominicans. By way of update, I was the top vote getter in last night’s judicial race, obtaining roughly 38% (approx 44,000) of the total votes. A candidate has to obtain 50% + 1 votes in order to win outright in the primary election. Therefore, since none of us obtained that percentage, I now advance to the general elections on November 2nd against the 2nd place competitor (There were three candidates).

This judicial race has been a wonderful experience. Broward county is roughly 1,300 square miles, and has 1,300,000 registered voters. The support from the Caribbean diaspora (mostly Jamaicans and Haitians) has been tremendous. The Dominican support has been magnificent and inspiring. Dominicans living in the nearby and far off areas came and pitched in. They walked door to door with us, contributed money, stood at polls and handed out leaflets, and encouraged their family, friends and colleagues to vote.

I am so very proud of my fellow Domnitjets, and so humbled by their efforts and show of support. This includes all the DA massive at home who called their stateside relatives and asked them to support.

I love you all and will continue to do my best to make you proud. Thank you again.

    – F. J. McLawrence

From the results i see so far, he appears to be in the lead. I hope it stays that way. What an achievement to be even this close in the race.

Why are we so quick to attack our fellow Dominicans, who have made great progress in self development abroad?. If you want them to come back home, give them the respect they deserve. We must learn something or two from the Chinese. provide incentives, to attract the great talents Dominica has in USA, England, Canada, and elsewhere. Do you think the Chinese are sitting and criticizing thier own peoples?, Heck ;no! they find them, and provide them, with incentives to return to the motherland. Take that to the next level.

@Anonymous: You talking arseness!! I am a Dominican who took my long loan from AID Bank to go to study in America. I decided to be patriotic and return to Dominica to serve, big mistake!! After eight years I have to settle for something out of my field. I have not been able to get a job here to put into use what I learnt – you talk about underutilization! I love my country, but it does not see though this love is requited. It makes no sense to come back home to work for ‘quass’ money and you have your long loan to pay among your other living expenses.

I cannot honestly tell someone after taking a loan and studying abroad that they should come back to Dominica when there seems to be no scope for them here.

With the way things are going, the brain drain will continue. Some folks just have to stay out there to help advertise Dominica.

one thing i can say is, well done, even better he from PORTSMOUTH, and to u nay sayers out there, we so ready to bash our country and people, that even when something good comes from our country, we have to be negative, aren’t u proud that at this time, DOMINICA is named in something GOOD? lets just say thanks, do u know that he could have been out there and still give us a bad name, so he is giving us a new look, lets just take it and thank the young man for remembering he from DOMINICA.

z@Anonymous: I for one agree with yor comment, most people would not see your point of view. First always give praise wheer it is due, the dude deserves his praise for his accomplishment, and we should be proud that one of our own can achieve this greatness. At the same time, i totally agree with you when it comes to love of country.

Congrats to McLawrence and his achievement, no doubt it is well deserved when he as gone through great lengths to acheive this accomplishment. It does make your country proud to know that one of our own has made such an accomplishment in their lives. Just as a mother would be proud of any of her kids that achieve greatness.

Now if that kid does not give back to his mother, how does that mother refer to that kid, even if she is proud of her kid? I mean you claim you love you mother, but not offer her anything in terms of service. Love for country is more than just mere words, I love my country but would rather stay in another country, because of circumstances. When you are patriotic; country comes first.

Marcus Garvey, say a man shouldn’t go to another man country with the intent to stay and build that man’s country, but to gather skills, education and come back and build his own. Many of us say that we love our country and yet don’t want to be in it. So when all you bashing anonymous for his comment, think about it first.

@Anonymous: Are you using the best skill that The Father has given you? Please use from this day onward your positive mouth talking skill instead. What can I do to play my part in the Development of my Country? This should be what you and the other negative talkers should be saying to yourself. I pray with you – Heavenly Father help me to turn from my negative ways and sow some seeds of love towards my fellow citizens. As your word says let me rejoice with those that rejoice (my emphasis – sucessful). Let me weep with those who weep (a young man just drowned and his family is in pain). Let me stand for you and ignore gossip, slander and lies. Give me wisdom and understanding so I can understand that some of us have to stay home and not all of us can go away and I know we are very intelligent persons in Dominica. So when our children go for studies etc, they will always excell and do well and make us Dominican stand tall and feel good. Lord take away my jealous feeling when others do well and I look for someway/ something to bring them down and say negative things. Father forgive me for what I have done in the past. Let me see things in a different way as I move forward to be a very positive person – first towards you and then love will come naturally towards my fellow brothers and sisters. In Jesus Name Father praise you for what you have done in my heart. Amen. DNO Readers Let us stop these damaging, disparaging statements, insultive etc. I appeal again to you. If you do not agree, give your views, why you do not agree and please justify. Hats off to those who do not agree sometimes but they do so in an objective manner.

Now Mr MacLawrence congratulations and hats off to you. You have made us feel good to be Dominican. One word of Advice is to put the Heavenly Father first in all you do and seek him when you have to take the tough decisions. He will give you wisdom to do what is best since he is a fair and merciful Father.

    Kudos.

hello , you do not know franz, he might be know as Jahra but i know him from the belly, i know him as franz, that little boy is a home boy, most people must have seen him here and dont know who he is because whenever he is here he is always on the block in lagoon, where he is from, maybe just sitting on the beach at purple turtle or just walking around the mang, thats alway franz, so please dont dis him, he is what you might call, a down to earth kind of boy; its not his fault that he went away, his mother migrated when he was an infant and filed form him at at early age; had it not been that, i can tell you he would have been here, because his heart and soul is in Lagoon, so please if you cannot wish him well, leave him alone please, he has friends and family here, live him in peace. Possy massive, rise up!!!

    Dear Fellowmen and Women,

I am a frequent reader of DNO News and Comments. I greatly appreciate all the news.I love and appreciate some of the comments which are quite positive. However I have just this little comment to ascertain as to why are some people so negative? Instead of wishing the young man well in his achievements, it is always comments like “why dont they come and develop their homeland”. It is easier said than done.

Certain circumstances are why we are away from our home land. It could be our parents has migrated and send for us or we have tried for a better life outside our home land. Some of us has families and business or working, raising children and cannot uproot and come over. Some of us may have to work until we have retired and then come home to spend our money, our intelligence to help develop our Island. (I am from Portsmouth) In the meantime the ones that are at home am sure is and will develop our homeland in the meantime whilst we are away.

Please fellowmen and women, lets us all try and be positive in our thoughts and wish the brother McLawrence all the best in his achievements and endeavours. This also goes to everyone else who has achieve something in their lives, whether it is at home or abroad.
