Probe into boat seizure on Grand Bay coast

Police PRO Claude Weekes

Police have launched investigations into an incident which involved a boat being intercepted at Stowe, Grand Bay over the weekend.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Claude Weekes police the boat was intercepted at  sea during a police investigation.

“There is much talk about an incident that took place at Stowe … It’s a fact that the police were operating in the Stowe, the Grand bay area, and during the course of their investigations they intercepted a boat; and the investigations with respect to the boat, and other forms of investigations are taking place. Of course, as the information unfolds I’m sure that the press will be informed,” Weekes said at a press briefing this morning at his office.

Weekes informed that according to information he received, persons have gone missing but no reports have been made concerning these missing persons. Weekes urged these families to make reports of these missing persons.

“We are also hearing from the ground that people are missing, I’m saying that if people are missing it would be so prudent, so important that families of people who are missing would make reports. As far as I know all the police stations in Dominica are functional and are working and reports can be made anywhere,” the inspector said.

He added, “So if families are so concerned about people who are missing one can draw the inference that if the people that they say that are missing might be so important to them I believe that they have every right to make a report… But what is important and what is factual that the police continue to be vigilant on air, in sea , on land where ever it is to protect the citizenry of the commonwealth of Dominica by virtue of any kind of criminality that may surface in  the land.”

Unconfirmed reports have stated that gun fire was heard in the early hours of Saturday morning in Grand Bay during the alleged incident. According to these reports persons may have been injured due to this gun fire.

Dominica News Online will bring you more details as soon as it becomes available.

I think Mr. Weekes would like to see things happen the right way, but he is not getting the assistance of his fellow officers, so it have mr. weekes looking like he is really weak. seriously this man is using all the right words, all the right terms but they are all out of context, it looks like the things he is talking about it is not really on the planet where the dominica police force is, because his logics and explanations really does not make any sense at all in real life.

Your comment is worst that the explaination of Mr Weekes because you are making a blanket staement without any examples of what you are suggesting. Re-submit your comment and give examples of segments of Mr Weekes’ statement that support your comment or else stop removing all doubt that you do not understand the english language. Your coment would not make sense in a cartoon. Peace.

    Mr.Inspector weeks,
stated that ” unconfirmed reports” stated that gun fire was heard.
So he is unaware as to , if his officers themselves were engaged in GUNFIRE ?
that his offices just intercepted a small boat and thats it, no bodies, no drugs, no fire arm were found?
and so until no one makes missing person reports they themselves will continue to withhold information or keep every thing on a low.?
Is that the way that the system operates?
or, i have wondered is it that they place emphasis on families making reports in such that they would identify the persons or even apprehend them.

i don’t wish to take sides in this matter, the fact is, drug dealers, are human beings as well as everyone of us and the officers duty to enforce the law not abuse their privileges , everything has to be done with discretion, vigilance and professionalism.
If all these allegations are there fore true, then the officers and inspector weeks owe it to the people of that community, the public and the families, to be informed.

its not about who’s wrong or right, the time for that has expired.
we are all citizens,we all have rights and be it that some persons choose to engage in acts which are unsatisfactory, that doesn’t mean that they should be treated like animals.i mean come on, even the parrots has rights.

The incident happened about a week ago, still no sufficent information as to what excatly,Person in the area said that gun fire lasted about 1 hour to 30 minutes approximatley, this fire reportedly came form the police officers on patrol. When incidents like these happen isn’t the police duty to report it to there superiors. This incident shouldn’t just past in thin air.I am not against the police and their duties. Please inform us the Dominica public with relevant information. Why haven’t they come out and tell us why the gunfire and how much drugs was siezed and whats the street value for the amount of drugs siezed.Too long in Dominica the law men do what they want and get away. The people of south area, along with there parliamentary representative needs to demand a official report from the police officials.

I only now reading about that today….imagine that…..and it suited me just fine knowing that a few more “druggies” may have bit the dust. You know some of us actually want them gotten rid of before we are all to scared to leave or homes, our children to traumatized (to use your word) to go out to play, getting caught in a drive by. To the people who are anti- police, they are there to protect our citizens and country. If a police officer does something wrong, this has nothing to do with the dutites they have to execute.

Not because some people think that the Police Officers need to be discipline, should justify the fact that drugs should take over our Country.

Grand Bay/ Stowe againnnnn!!!! Same difference to me people. Stop posturing and take back your community from them drug dealers. One of the biggest problem is the hypocracy of some people in that community. They know exactly what’s going on and yet because the money is nice they condone it. But when their bondar patay they want to scream police not doing their work.

Good job officers, keep up the good work. If you guys turn a blind eyes they will still complain and blame you for not doing your job. Now, we all know there are …. in the police force but overall we have one of the best police forces in the caribbean and should be damn proud of it.

The police force has its problems and that can only be fixed when we get good leadership that will stare the police in a positive direction from recruiting onwards. In the meantime, law and order must be maintained at all cost. I have many friends in the police force and to think they are all corrupt, lazy or otherwise involved in corrupt practices is insane. I ask all of you not only in G/Bay but through out the country to bring the evidence you have on corrupt officers to the IPO or the PM’s office if the commissioner will do nothing about it. We must all join in getting rid of these corrupt officers. Standing and complaining to non entities is not going to cut it. Corruption has no place in any institution.

In conclusion, great job Mr. Weekes. It seems like the police have finally learnt NOT to divulge too much information that can compromise an onging investigation. May the spirit of the ancestors be very pleased.

The incident did not happen at Grandbay! It happened on the sea at Stowe. Get your facts and stop speculating. If the police had informed people then there would not be all these rumurs. If it happened outside your house what would you be saying eh? While sleeping at 2:30 in the morning you and your family are awakened by gunshots firring steady for 25mins. What would you say? Then the next day its like nothing happened would you not be scared? All people want is an explanation of what happened outside there homes in the early morning. Thats all!

I trust that those bandits are at the bottom of the ocean, as they had not right to shoot at the officers. Had they not fired upon the officers, there wouldn’t have been any need for thee return of fire.

N.Y., N.Y. I hate to tell you the bad news that I have been there and done that. Reported them and NOTHING happened. Not once but twice. both In person and in writing. to the highest ranking officers in the force. SO first hand I know its a waste of time. The crime was not drugs so who cares..The most they do is to admit they have problems. so i know what I am talking about. belive me it drugs concern me too but drugs is not the only crime going on in grand bay . And those officers themselves b reak the law evry day. people have rights too. THey do not have the respect of the people. and they have only themselvees to blame.

You dont h ave to belive me, just take a walk in the village and ask. You will get the stories. They are lazy and do not do their work. all they want is praise for seizing drugs and to have excitement of shooting. the problem starts from the top. they are the ones that makethem feel they are doing enought. There is NO discipline in the force- discipline in correcting and discipline in doing things right.Claude weeks is trying his best but he is a one man gang. I feel sorry for him.

  34. Excuse me?
    March 4, 2010

Excuse me please Dominicans. . . let’s get this straight. Dominica is the only place where people believe they can have the police like ding dang, and want to complain about everything they don’t know about.

I hear Matt in the morning trying to get inspector weeks to give information. i understand that you are a journalist and your job is to get the news to the people of the nation and most times recently a good job is being done.

I would also like to state for the record that i am not taking the police side in this matter, because i have my concerns with them as well, but in getting to my point i will say this.

In the event the police was conducting an investigation which may or may not include undercover operatives and unidentified drug dealers you cannot expect them to come and start talking to Dominicans and tell them “ohh well we fired three rounds for x and y”.

We’ve all seen those movies like bad boys etc, GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

i know that there are some dirty cops out there, but is none of allu business what the police does with an ongoing investigation. If you know what they doing , d drug dealers also knows whats happening and that deprives the police of the element of surprise, leaving the drug dealers with more escape options and wriggle room.

    STOOP PRESSURING THE POLICE!!!!

    Great Job Inspector Weeks!

If you a concern law abiding citizen of Dominica you would not support such activity. The use of drugs is destroying our Country and young people. It is high time something is done. If you know the police officers are involve in unlawful behavior, and have all your facts and evidence, then report them, in the mean-time they have a job to do and let them do it.

  44. Follow work guidelines
    March 4, 2010

Why … is Claude Weekes calling a press briefing when he has no information or refuses to give the information to the media? This was a complete waste of time, he is only confirming that he too has heard rumors and it seems he has no information.
We have to look at the way we do things in Dominica. So you mean to tell me, the Police has not handed in a report of the incident. So the Police has not reported whether they think persons were injured as a result of the hour long gun-fire from them. And if so, has the police paraded the area looking for bodies, or even went back to the area on Saturday to recover injured persons or bodies. So in other words, the police opened fire on a small vessel (where marijuana was confiscated) for almost an hour on the sea in Grand Bay , and now want us to tell them the results of that exercise. But that man is … or what?
I mean that makes no sense to me. So drug dealers are not the police can injure / kill persons and not report it? I am looking at the bigger picture and it is really sickening. I mean I have no problem with the police doing raids and intercepting drugs which are apparently entering and leaving our shores, but further to that a detailed report has to be given and the public needs to know.

That gunfire woke person form their beds and lasted near an hour… that is a traumatizing experience for anyone. So you have to come better than that boy!
