Two young men who were caught in possession of cannabis while riding on a scooter in Belles have been fined.
Kenny Roberts 23, and Dian Luke, 24, were charged with possession and intent to supply cannabis, but the second charge was dropped against Roberts in Magistrates’ Court today.
According to the facts of their cases, presented by the police prosecutor , the two men were stopped on a scooter by officers on a cruise patrol. They had first noticed Luke, the pillion driver, throw a yellow plastic bag into the bushes while riding on the bike.
“Having stopped the area, the officer took the defendant back to that area where he had seen him throw the yellow bag and asked him what he had thrown away,” the prosecutor explained.
“Weed that there,” Luke remarked.
Constable Alexander, who had retrieved the bag and opened it in the presence of the defendant noticed a black plastic bag wrapped in grey tape.
When cautioned, Luke said, “Officer I tell you is weed that in it.”
The cannabis weighed 1384 grams – a total of four pounds with a street value of $4,000.
Luke was fined $6,000 on the intent to supply charge and no separate penalty for the possession charge. One thousand dollars of that fine is expected to be paid by May 31, 2010 or he will face three months in jail. The balance was ordered to be paid by September 30, 2010 or he will face eight months in prison.
Thirteen grams of cannabis was found on Roberts – the motorcycle driver. He told police that it Luke had just given him the cannabis.
He was fined $600 to be paid by May 31 or he spends one month in prison. According to the prosecutor, this was his first offense.

So I’m not sure how your laws work. If someone carries a little herb on them, or keeps a couple lbs personal at home, or even has a couple plants in the backyard, can you go to jail for that or is it just a fine? Online I read something about that you can get permission from a doctor to use weed? Is that right?

hey what the hell is going on with the youth of today,drugs motor bike killing it seem that is all the young people wants to do with there life and time smoking. why cant they find some positive things with them selves,look at all de different projects that is going all around Dominica i am sure that they and get something to do or get involve with the youth division its high time that we the young people so giving society a reason to doubt us and start looking at us as responsible people ready to take our country to next level.we need to take life more seriously and look with in ourselves and find the reason why we are here.
The state of California in the US is working on making Marijuana legal.It is legal in Holland.In about half the states in the US it is legal for medicinal use.

I do hope that Dominica will change the laws as it pertains to the possession of marijuana. More US states are moving towards legalizing it. Charge a tax on it, you would be better off. The sexual abusers, cocaine trafficers, rapist, murderers deserve more attention and stricter laws and imprisonment on them. Change the laws on the damn weed.
