Shanice is back home

Shanice Jemmot

Shanice Jemmot, who was discovered on March 28, 2011 after 40 days of being reported missing, is back home.

Shanice, 15, was released from the psychiatric unit of the Princess Margaret Hospital in the middle of last week, sources told Dominica News Online (DNO).

The source close to the family told DNO that the teenager is happy to be back in the comfort of her home. The source said she is in good spirits and would like some privacy.

Shanice was taken to hospital for examination after police discovered her alive in the Hillsborough Estate area in St. Joseph on the Monday night of March 28.

Webster Edmund, who disappeared around the same time Shanice was reported missing, was supposedly with Shanice during the 40 days she had gone missing. He was discovered by police in the Hillsborough Estate area and then led the lawmen to Shanice’s location.

Edmund, 37, was sentenced to two years and five weeks in jail after pleading guilty to four charges in court recently, offenses he committed while allegedly holding Shanice captive for 40 days.

Ten charges were brought against Edmund when he appeared at a Roseau court, three days after he and the teen had been found.

He appeared before the St. Joseph court Thursday, April 7, 2011, where only four charges were dealt with: unlawful possession of 67 grams of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to supply, possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition. The kidnapping charge will be heard in court at a future date.

In a plea for Edmund before his sentence was handed down, defense attorney Peter Alleyne said Edmund has been cooperative with police and did not waste the court’s time.

Edmund, who is from the Layou community, had been in difficulty with the law for other matters in previous years.

Shanice’s disappearance caused a media frenzy and drew national attention with speculation running rife on the cause and the manner of her disappearance. It was said she was seen on numerous occassions in Dominica and her mother told the media that she was sighted in Guadeloupe.

A total of $35,000 of reward money was subsequently raised by the government, private sector and family for Shanice’s safe return.

Give Shanice a break now.. she is a strong girl.. I saw her myself… give her privacy.. when she gets older and she wants to talk.. let her do it.. but now.. media ppl should leave her alone..she is only a child. Let ppl speculate.. is just beff we like to hear. I would like to hear also..but I think protecting a child is much more important than my itching ears.
God bless and keep her… I know it was all the prayers that were lifted on her behalf..that kept her alive and safe. Thanks You Jehovah.

I’d like of-course express my sincerest grattitude to all who supported the family during this time of grief as it relates to the disappearance of their love one Shanice . Thanks to the Almighty for his hands of mercy and love , full of grace . Having visited Shanice at her dad’s home earlier today , can’t say how touching , but even more than that , seeing her sit at the computer reading DNO and the comments made about her disappearance at the time she was missing . Those she said brought tears to her eyes , when she read the negative comments and filthy statements made to her relation with Webster . People and I will say so tomorrow on all radio talk shows , this is what I consider to be a poor image painted about the young girl . She felt hurt and is hurt , by your insults , accusations and negative sexual pictures you painted . She claimed not have the heart to read , but decided too . I say to DNO , your screening efforts are useless , since you all don’t do such and allow all these garbage to surface on your site . Whilst DNO serves the wider world with information and more-so promotion of the nature isle , yet it joins in sending wrong signals and image of the country and natives . Once again thank God for his wonderful works , and I do believe to all the inquisitve D/cans including me and the wider world , when Shanice finds the courage thru healing to speak about the forty days and forty nights of her being kidnapped by her rapist she will , quit ye like fools and be more sencsitive towards the broken hearted , traumatized and psychologically disturbed child . Thank you all . I know you all feel now how I felt , that’s how she feels and guess you do too . So this is not a joking matter .

He did not cooperate with the police so why would the lawyer say that he did; he should have sent this child home the same day or week; he had all the family worried and even sent the mother to psychic ward; he should be given life or castration

Welcome Home Shanice! We are happy that your ordeal has a happy ending. Home is the best place to be. There is no place like home surrounding by a loving family and in comfortable surroundings.
There is no doubt that your experience will serve you well. In view of this, you will be a better child – teenager, and later adult when that time arrives and throughout those years.
In the meantime, take your time to recuperate. Then enjoy your teenage years and make the most of this time, also in school.
Parents always mean well for their children.
Those who enquire about the reward money may be curious but they are not wrong. I do hope the government considers giving at least some of that money to Shanice and her family. God knows that they need them in her rehabilitation process as well as education of all. May this be considered for Shanice’s future.
God bless you and your family. His peace be to you and your family.

Any sane person would be happy the teenager is back at her home safe. Now give the girl some privacy for her to recover. Do not ask questions that is none of your business.

Secondly, money is not all, some people are too materialistic, geeez. A young lady has been traumatized all you can think about is money?

I understand that if promises were made for someone to get this reward then it should be kept, however, your timing is just wrong!
