Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says government will commit to the implementation of draconian laws in Parliament this year to fight crime in Dominica.

“We have to fight this at every single corner,” Skerrit said Wednesday, as 34 police recruits were officially welcomed into the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force.

He called on called on families to discourage their sons and daughters who are bringing in “monies and gifts and stuff home that you know they have not gained through some gainful employment”.

“In this year 2011, as we did in 2010, there will be some very strong and draconian legislation that will be passed in the Parliament of
Dominica to assist the police and other agencies to fight crime in this country … so that we can ensure that we can walk the streets, go to the beaches and use the rivers in Dominica at any time of day or night not being fearful of our safety,” Skerrit stated.

National Security Minister Charles Savarin has disclosed that a new firearms act will be taken to parliament in early in 2011, to increase
considerably, penalties for fire-arm related offences “including mandatory minimum sentencing for some offences.”

National Security Minister Charles Savarin.

Savarin has also noted that violent crimes in the past year were above average “equaling the high rate of 14 murders in 2009”.

“The Christmas day fire at St. Aroment and the shooting death of two brothers in Grand Bay, emphasized the need for our continued vigilance and community involvement,” he said.

Mr. Skerrit, passing laws to fight crime is not as easy as you make it sound you know, because as far as I am concerned you and Savarin are the biggest criminals in Dominica. Savrin brought down dominica and the party you stole from us, while Tony accused you of bringing down two of our well loved PM’s. Apart from that, your name mr Pm is mentioned in kinds of ills and lawlessness in Dominica. So really, for you and Savarin to pass laws against crime in DA is like fighting against yourselves, and that will just not happen. Oh, it might only happen in a dream!

Follower, I think they are talking about violent crimes. Some of all you kill me on this site. You are just as bad as the politicians. You purposely miss the point of the story and turn it around into a war of words. I am not a Skerrit supporter or any political party in Dominica but violent crimes are getting out of hand in Dominica and they need to implement what Rudy Gulliani did when he was mayor of NYC, “any means necessary” I guarantee you, we will see a huge reduction in violent crimes.

Many of you sway far away from the subject. On many occasions your comments are out of place and are not in accord with the topic.
The personal life of politicians do not come into play here. You should leave them out of it and address the issue of criminals. Such comments are senseless and project a wicked streak. They only encourage criminals and do nothing to eliminate the evil situation in Dominica as crimes and murders escalate and many of you complain about it, blaming the PM and other ministers for them. You are seriously at fault and need to change your mannerisms and comments on this Website.
If the government wants to implement laws whether draconian or not, it is within its rights to do so for the good of every Dominican citizen.
You could try helping the government and your country for that matter and yes, by praying to God to eradicate criminals which pose a menace to society.
If Dominicans are not able to live in freedom and peace and fear criminals who will invade their homes while they are sleeping, even while they are awake or are out and in areas where they go to, to enjoy a day’s outing then there is a serious problem in the island and the government needs to do something about it.
I do think that if many of you who post negative comments which are approved would practice your faith as you should and if you do, your comments would be charitable in words of all and would be considerate and compassionate ones. You do give yourselves a poor reputation and you are by no means helping the situation in Dominica.

      WHAT THE…

      DEAR “TRUTH…”

A CRIME IS A CRIME IS A CRIME IS A CRIME.

DO YOU READ THE NEWS (i mean international news)
LOOK THE US JUST JAILED A CONGRESSMAN FOR 3 YEARS FOR MONEY LAUNDERING.

IN REAL COUNTRIES “ALL” CRIMINALS ARE PROSECUTED, NOT ONLY THE LOW-PROFILE ONES.

IF YOU DO NOT PROSECUTE THE HIGH-PROFILE ONES, THE LOW-PROILE CRIMINALS WELL FEEL EMPOWERED TO DO MORE CRIME BECAUSE THEY WILL SEE THAT YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT CRIME.

IN CIVILIZED COUNTRIES (not Dominica) ALL CRIMES ARE PUNISHED

SO MR, SKERRIT SHOULD START WITH HIMSELF.

IF YOUR SISTER SHOOT YOU WITH A GUN OR A BURGLAR SHOOT YOU WITH A GUN, YOU ARE STILL SHOT.
THE LAW GOES NOT SAY SISTERS ARE ALLOWED TO SHOOT BUT BURGLARS AREN’T

      MAY GOD BLESS YOU

Bruce again stick to the topic. They are talking about violent crimes. They are talking about making Dominica safer. And while I agree with you that the Prime Minister may be corrupt, this is not the thread for this discussion. I believe violent crimes affect the everyday man much more than what Skerit does in his private life or how much money he steals, however, this is not the forum for this discussion. Start acting educated.

Why do we always criticize? We are all concerned of the direction Dominica is taking. Most, if not all the violent crimes happening in DA are drugs and Guns related. If the government want to pass laws to curbs these crimes, he needs the support of Dominicans. As an ex -cop ,I do think we need strict laws. Dominica have reached a stage , where every Police Officer needs to carry a government issued firearm and a pair of handcuffs. Barbados did it, because tourist was getting killed and being robbed on the beaches. WHY cant we do it? MAKE HAST MR. PRIME MINISTER PASS THE LAW. GOOD LUCK TO THE GENUINE POLICE OFFICERS.

Tell us Dominicans WHO ARE THE CRIMINALS. WHAT WE WANT is EQUAL RIGHTS and JUSTICE.
Investigate the RUBBISH BIN and FERTILIZER BOBOLS. Who Truly owns the VILLAS up at SAVANNE PAILLE? Who is trying to PREVENT the case, Isidore vs. Emmanuel, from taking its Natural course. Who are involved in the NUMEROUS CORRUPT ACTIVITIES? Too many to mention. All those alleged KICK-BACKS from National Projects as Jerry revealed. No Investigation, Nothing? The Money-Laundering activities, No investigation? All the Laws that are being disrespected, No investigation, No court Case? The counterfeit dollars going right up to Cuba to Dominican students, No investigation up to now, nothing?

Some Human beings have NO FACE. They are BOLD, Unscrupulous, deceitful, with Hearts of Stone. Some human beings would seek punishment, jail term for others who commit criminal acts, but if they commit the very same or worse crimes they do everything in their power to try to abort the case or use influence to prevent the case from going forward or connive with others in authority to put a spoke in the wheel of justice. That’s how Dominica come. Who are those criminals?

I am wondering whether it is a thing to be proud of that the government “In 2011, will be passing draconian legislation in the Parliament of Dominica” Strong yes but “draconian”? I am not sure if that was a wise thing to say.

  19. Lizavier4Jesus
    January 13, 2011

Okay! Well the next step is to keep your mind focus on your initiative. If you allow God to guide your choices, your plan will come through with purity.

My sister’s step son is dead now, from November last year, through a brutal murder. I don’t know what, and who he was involved with, the reason he lost his life that way. So I cannot just blame the offender, or the peson/persons who killed him. Most of the time we will reap the seeds that we sow. Hence we need to focus on sowing good seeds.

We now live in a world where a massive number of people–old, not so old, young, parents and children, are just downright, empty inside. We desire to live a life of fulfillment but we are continually walking the wrong paths, searching for that fulfillment.

On those paths we meet with confusion, doubt, disappointment, and disparagement. Disatisfaction in us eventually produce frustration, anger, and rebellion. Those natures further destroy our hope in our search for fulfillment, and so, we choose to go on a high-ride, creating havoc in our communities and surroundings; hurting everyone and destroying everything that cross our path.

Tougher laws and more policemen alone, will not combat crime to a significant effect. We must first attempt to eliminate the predicaments of crime. Younger people are normally the targets of those predicaments; hence we must focus on their needs and protection.

Our young people need to be properly nurtured; this nurturing should begin at home. They need to feel recognized and accepted; they need to be exposed to various ways of counsel–youth groups, church, arts, crafts, music, and drama programs; spots and other exciting activities with concrete supervision for leisure; they need to know that after their school years there are facilities of employment, that they might choose their favorite job.

Adults, parents, need to remember that they were young as well. I truly believe that as adults, we have an extremely bad attitude towards our young people. Because of that, the young tend to withdraw themselves before they have to deal with the setback–creating a generation gap. This kind of gap between the younger and the older has continued from generation to generation.

When we are young we are extremely vulnerable, weak, and or susceptible. Our young people needs more encouragement and less belittlement; they need more appreciation and less rejection; they need to be given more approval and lesser objection.

Unless we have an initiative with those objectives in mind, the combate to minimize the attitude and conducts of crime in our communities could continue forever.

We should be more serious with criminals who steal state assets to build million dollar villas
and million dollar mansions which is not in sinc with their legal incomes. People who violate our
constitution and arrogantly broadcast on radio that no “law or constitution can stop them” from doing

discourage your children from bringing home gits and money?,what a joke.when u lead by example and not accept gifts and money then u will have the moral authority to utter such words. the morals of dominica has been wash down to the sea as the follow the leadership of the country. the situation in dominica is not complex, however the populist seem to have the vision clouded as if u do not say the word then u will be victimized and place in a conner.so we all want to be like mike and just go with the flow.law and oder, the prime minister is the very last person to speak on this issue, a french man as prime minister who refuses to resing?, and he speaks about law and oder, the country will continue to be lawless until the political directorate pratcies what is spoken of.
