Teenager in custody for chopping incident

The severed hand

A 17-year-old of St Joseph is in now in policy custody assisting the lawmen in their investigations of a machete attack yesterday in the village of St. Joseph in which another young man lost his hand.

The teenager is alleged to have completely severed the hand, by the wrist, of 18-year-old Brian Francis during a dispute between the two individuals, allegedly over a scissors.

The teenager faces a charge of grievous bodily harm.

Reports are that the victim underwent surgery yesterday but he will not regain the use of his hand.

Am totally saddened to see the condition of this lifeless hand on the ground, its not a good sight to see, although its good to show criminals faces an so on. this was disgraceful and gruesome and it should not be viewed, on another hand i don’t know what is wrong with society, not Dominica only, why cant the youths get along, its ridiculous to lose a hand over a scissors, I do a lot of sewing i have about 20 scissors at least i could give them? Well i hope the other youths take heed, if they want to be out of school learn a trade and be peaceful.

I agree with you……one of the reasons why the youth are the way they are is because parents are no longer teaching their children….they are leaving it up to the world and the world has some pretty nasty thing to teach.

Another reason is that children are making children left and right….children cannot teach children…..as a community we have to rally around young mothers……

anyway, where has the institution of marriage gone????? Its seems as if, dominicans doesnt get married anymore.

its sad that a young man would think that the only way to resolve an arguement is through violence.

by the way, i am 21 so this is not coming from an ‘old person’….my family did their job and taught me values.

it’s a very sad situation, i live abroad and i keep check of the news back home and i couldn’t believe what i read and saw, i mean we’re dealing with some way to serious to even be joking about, it could have been a family a friend, if i could change the law i would put him on trial as an adult to hell with the age of consent change the law!

It defies logic – altercation over a “scissors” – well my long campaign of the National Service brigade (a boot-camp) in D/ca is falling on death ears. The youths of our beloved D/ca needs to be awakened, to be taught to respect and value themselves first and humanity. Where has the essence of nurturing gone – to respect to be respected in return and to respect your peers / elders, at all times?

Granny Iya R.I.P (deceased aged 100 late 2001) who brought me up you know – that’s why at 45 I am an exemplar human being, and nothing will change until I succumb to the inevitable (death).

I’m appalled and ashamed by the news!

As a parent with kids and have worked with young people, it’s disheartning to see and hear some of the horror stories that some young people have to go through. Parents our children are the future leaders, future parents of tomorrow. Whatever we instill in them in their young life that they will practice. No matter what age they are talk to them, love them, help them, be there for them. For in our absence someone will take our place. And the question is WHO WILL IT BE. (proverbs 22v 6)The bible says “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” We make the mistake of spoiling them when they are young and as they mature we try to incooperate certain moral values that should have been in place from day one. Instilling values in our kids from an early age does not mean that we have to spoil them and let them have their own way. This should be the foundation that we build on as our children grow older. Though some kids come from good homes and end up doing bad, but I’d rather know that I was there and helped my kids a billion and one time and he choose to do wrong than not be there at all and see them do wrong. What happen to the days when the community was involved in raising the kids? A kid does wrong and when one complains to the parent instead some parent correct the child they find fault with the complainant and let the kid know wow miss so and so said this do you know this about her? My my. I remember five years ago my neighbor’s daughter would be out at about midnite, 2am…with a man twice her age and I knew her mum worked the graveyard shift, so I decided to have a talk with the mum concerning what I saw. The following day the young lady passed me I said hi she grinned and uttered something. Later I met the mum I said by your daughters reaction earlier I knew you spoke to her. She looked at me and said I trust my daughter and she’d never do something like that. They’d then pass me like strangers. Three months down the road guess who was pregnant. I say this to say good neighbors look out for each other especially our children. Let’s all work together for the best of our community and children no matter where we live. POSITIVE is how I live and what I don’t want to see infront of my door I don’t want ot see in front of yours. May God bless each and everyone of you and may God guide our families.

I agree. I taught the secondary school for one year. this was worst experience in all my years of teaching. I decided two things..either i go to do my masters or stay home . i made the best decision. not me again.

      • A fan of St. Joseph Secondary School
        December 2, 2010

@ SAD… I wish to inform you that the Secondary school at St.Joseph does NOT only consist of students from the village of St. Joseph. It serves from Dublance to Massacre. Every time something negative involving a young person, happens in the community of St. Joseph ppl are quick to jump on the school. Dominicans have chosen to label this school as the worst school on the island. We get disrespected at competitions and other events that we get invited to.And when we do exceptionally well ppl raise their eyebrows like its almost impossible for us to perform so incredibly well. Thanks to loving Dominicans like yourself our school has to work twice as hard as any other school to show that the ugly label that we have been given it is not so. FYI there are lots of shiny stars there; who work hard in all areas of their school life. let me ask you? In your “one” year at the school did you have an impact on any student? Did you seek to make a difference in the life of any of the students? Especially one of those struggling with countless issues brought onto them by an unsympathetic society? And you went to do your masters as you put. Hmmmm… Hats off to you for that. we need more citizens with Masters. But one last question… How have you used that Masters to make a difference in this our beautiful Island Home? I guess not you again. Take your time and do a little research. many master holders like your self came from that secondary school on the hill in Senjo.

@ SAD I’m a past student of ITSS and i didnt turn out lyk that. Its so typical for FOOLISH ppl lyk u 2 think that way. Great men and women hail from ITSS. Since u claimed to b a teacher there den i assume da u are a grown person…or at least u look lyk one cuz a matured mind wudnt think lyk da. Students of ITSS dont all come from St. Joseph…so wat u said has no tru relation 2 d previous comment..idiot. AND its not the school that make the children behave that way. Its the way the were raised…or simply because they think da ‘i’m gangster’. If ITSS is a slack school den its because of ppl lyk u->>d stupid narrow-minded fools who dont do anythin effective 2 try changin these kids. This is how u lose any bit of respect ppl had 4 u…this is how all this chaos comes about. All this judgin of ppl..all these expectatios. Everyone tellin u eat but no one is puttin food in yr mouth to eat. RETARD. And i bet i had sum form of admiration 4 u, whoever u r, cuz HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS on a whole hv it rough…nt js @ ITSS..bu thats too bad. SO MANY GROWN UPS FAIL TO REALISE THAT THE PATHS WE YUNG ONES WALK…IS D ONES DA U GAVE US D TOOLS 2 BUILD IF U ALL DIDNT ALRDY BUILD DEM YRSELVES! Nt sayin da wa d padna did was ryt…jus disgusted.

A lady told me that it is a simple thing for the authorities to do,
you take a mans life I bring you to the theatre and take your life.
You take the mans hand off, I take you to the theatre and remove your hand back.
That is without going to court or anything, so no lawyer fees or court fees to pay.
Therefore you will know what it is to live without a hand for the rest of your life too.
