Theft of steel files lands man in court

Leo Magloire, formerly Jack Bonnie of Cochrane, has been sentenced by a Roseau Magistrate’s court for stealing from J.E. Nassief in Roseau over the weekend.

The defendant appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste yesterday where he pleaded guilty to stealing four steel files costing $31.60. He also pleaded guilty to battery and wounding.

The facts of the case, according to the police prosecutor, stated that Magloire was spotted by security guard Jean Simeon, while he placed the said items under his shirt before attempting to leave the store.

When confronted the defendant handed the items to the security guard but pulled it back causing the files to wound Simeon’s left hand. Magloire then attempted to run. He was subdued and a report was made to the police.

“Sorry for what I did. I have kids I should not be doing that,” he said in his plea of mitigation.

“I know I was wrong. Even if I have to do community service I will do it,” he added.

The items were recovered and the defendant was sentenced to pay $1,200 by March 31, 2012 or he spends seven months in jail on the theft charge.

He was also fined $1,000 on the wounding charge. This is to be paid by the same date or he spends six months in prison. There was no separate penalty on the battery charge. Sentences are to run concurrently.

If you know it is wrong, why do you do it? And when you get caught you crying like a baby?

If I do something that I know is wrong, I am prepared to face the consequences like a man.

If you are so inclined, you have to decide whether the penalty is worth the risk. Only a fool or a very reckless person takes a risk where the penalty is much greater than the reward.

Man i like that Magistrate, we need more like her, If we had Harsher sentenses being brought upon these guys they would think twice before even considering doing stupid things like that. he would have though of his children during the act instead of after. We need more examples like that in our justice system.

That was such a DUMB comment! Why do people with that type of mentality post these absurd comments? If everyone who is considered poor should steal to survive, there would be no law and order in DA.
