Theft of wine and coffee lands man in prison

Edmund Charles,59, of Fond Cole was sentenced to 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing two bottles of Nightrain Wine and a bottle of coffee from ACS 7-11 Minimart on High Street.

Charles appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste this morning.

The incident occurred on October 22,2011 at about 7. 30 pm. The items came to a total value of $39. 95.

Charles had entered the establishment and attempted to walk out with the said items in his pant pocket. He was spotted by the security guard who then alerted the police.

His call for leniency during mitigation did not deter the magistrate as she pointed to Charles’ long list of previous offenses- many of which are similar in nature.

The items were returned to the owner.

Hate seeing these prosecutions on dno and not hearing about any prosecutions for the kilos of cocaine being seized, of the guy from mahaut caught with 80 how much thousands if u.s / euro, of the murders that happen in dca, of all the armed robberies on businesses. This is getting to me because this person here should get community service while others fill up the prison for real crimes. Petty crime? Get them to give back to the community, community service. More serious? Jail! Simple common sense

To those who are lamenting about the 10 months jail term that the man received for stealing $40.00 worht of items; just like you,I also opened my mouth and my eyes as wide as I could when I read the term of sentence.

But as I continued to read the news article, I noticed that this man has a “long list of pervious offenses–many of which are of the same nature”.

Stealing is a crime of the civil law, and it is a sin against God Almighty, who said: “Thou shall not steal”.

There comes a time we must suffer the consequences of our wrong doings, if we cannot obey the law.

I just wish there was another form of punishment that would cause those people to really suffer the consequences of their wrong doings, instead of putting them in a place where it will aslo cost us to give them food and shelter for the length of their incarceration. O dear! O dear!

My comment my sound funny in certain areas, but it is no laughing matter………That’s how broken our law is, a man is getting ten months prison because he did not have money to buy some coffee and a cheap bottle of wine, so he try to get it ILLEGALLY and i want to high light that word but why should he get ten months and a murderer walks. With 27% plus unemployment and growing, 30% plus poverty, the Judge could at least consider the man. The man maybe went too long with having coffe in the morning and wanted something mild during the day, so he too a wine as well. You have people killing, rapping, selling drugs and so on, and most of the don’t get to spend more than a month in prison….
Come on YOUNG Dominicans, only you can make that change, put your heads together and lets cut off all that injustice. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying any stealing is good, but considering this is minor compare to the other crimes people get away with, some of the judges can have a heart……Well poor man, his fate has already been decided…….

So it will cost Dominican tax payers so much more than some wine and coffee to keep this man locked up for ten months…such a waste of public money.

Boy, at least there is one advantage in being poor and insignificant. You receive instant justice!! In two days from offence to Stock Farm. It really is not fair on the rich and famous, who have to wait much longer for their just rewards.
