Thibaud man steals flashlight for hurricane season

Repeat offender Earlsworth Henderson of Thibaud will spend the next three months reflecting on his actions at the Dominica State Prison after pleading guilty to stealing a flashlight and charger from the Shine Union store in Roseau.

Henderson’s justification for stealing the $37.99 flashlight and its matching charger valued at $20 was that it is the hurricane season and he has no electricity in his home, which he shares with his 78-year-old grandfather.

Revealing Henderson’s lengthy record of theft, Magistrate Candia George said: “You want to see light and you can’t afford, light a fire! Shine Union is not your paweh.

“You have me scared of you…. It seems that every time you out of prison you stealing something,” she stated before sentencing him.

“I see for the past year you have been doing well. Go and reflect…. Tell yourself what you were doing for the past year you going to continue to do it,” George told Henderson.

The incident occurred on August 31 at about 3 p.m.

don’t steal from big name places because it is important that the magistrate impress the big boys, if you steal from a little man you will only get to do community service or probation but thou shall not steal from no big name store. You must keep these store owners happy

I am appalled by the punishment. That’s an instance where the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. People fail to realize the person’s circumstance. He lives with an elderly family member with no electricity. There are folks in Dominica that deserve to be placed in prison but there are still walking the streets. For example, those for the murders of these young men found in the boat.

Delivering a sentence to a criminal is one thing but can this magistrate gain some class ?!?

What a waste of resources. Give him 37 lashes with “Cat-O Nine” as opposed to feeding him in Stocky for 3 months!
