When store assistant at Sharma Home Décor on Independence Street, Abigail Francis, went to work on Monday morning, little did she know that she would be receiving the shock of her life.

Francis said she opened the store’s sealed doors and proceed down the stairs to the basement where the store is located.

As she went down , she suddenly felt something was not right.

“Something just hit my spirit in a way that something was wrong,” she told Dominica News Online.

She went down the stairs slowly, afraid that someone would jump out at her and when she entered the store, what greeted her eyes filled her with horror.

“When I looked all around I seeing everything was just like a hurricane passed through the place,” she stated.

She quickly called a neighbor and her boss showed up right after.

Upon investigation, their fears were confirmed; the store had been visited by thieves.

They had gained entrance into the store by cutting the burglar bars and removing the glass from the window. Then a ladder was used to enter the store.

The thieves eventually made good their escape with some $15,000 worth of items plus the burglar bars and the glass from the window.

Just a stone throw away, Unlimited Services Plus, fared no better.

Owner of the establishment, Edward Coipel, told DNO that on Monday morning a staff member showed up for work and noticed a back door to the office open.

Investigations revealed the office was broken into and ransacked.

“We found that the office was vandalized,” he said. “Everything was on the floor; files, papers and everything were scattered on the floor … some draws were opened and some draws were on the floor, like a real ransack.”

Nothing of value was stolen. “I think they were looking for money,” Coipel said.

The office of talk show host and publicist, Karmala Jno Baptiste-Aaron, which is located in the same building, was also broken into.

She told DNO that to her knowledge nothing was stolen but the office was ransacked.

Even the Grotto Home was not spared by the long hands of the thieves.

On Monday morning it was discovered that a container on the site of the new Grotto Home in Bellevue Rawle was broken into.

President of the board of directors of the Home, Ainsworth Irish, said a padlock to the container was broken and when the thieves realized they could not break another, they sawed off the handle of the metal door to gain access.

A number of items, including cement and power tools, were stolen, Irish said.

He said the entire matter is disturbing, and is calling on anyone with information to call the police.

Both Coipel and Francis said police are investigating the break-ins at their business places.

Stop blaming the PM. There are two words we must remember, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Stop the blame games. It starts at the home, school, church. But sometimes no matter what you do, some people will always have sticky hands. The problem with us Dominicans, we like to hade things when we know it. But when it happens to us we want help. “YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. If you know something bad has happened and you don’t say anything, you are just as bad.

If we want to live in a civilized society, we cannot depend on the law enforcements and government to do everything. We have to do our part. What affects one, affects all. We are in this together. When they finish with Tom, Dick, Harry, Mary, Jane, and get away, who do you think they coming to seal from, it is one of us. Is not if it is going to happen to us, is when, if we don’t do something and say something.

Its funny how people are quick to turn every matter on the island into a political something. Robbery is something that happens everywhere all the time. Geeez, people are desperate especially as carnival is here. They will not work because it will take too long to make the money.
I do not agree to say there is no work nuh. How is it that the spanish and the hatians can find work to do until they even EMPLOYING Dominicans? Is it really that there is no work? or is it that some people are too dam lazy and care to make a quick buck as long as they are not caught. Stupes, catch every theif and cut off their hands hopefully, it will come to a hault.

Way papa. Anyhow Skerrit have “marler”. Every negative thing that happen in DA it’s because of Sherrit. People steal all the time as long as they think they can get away with it. It’s not ONLY in Dominica the unemployment rate is high.
Work the land, plant fruits, vegetables and coconut, make cocoa, castor oil and sell them! Do something to earn a living, but don’t blame the PM for everything!

it would actually be nice to have reports on these thieves.
If anyone has information, suspects anything or has witnessed something, its time to speak up. Help stop crime. We cannot wait till it happens to us for it to become our business. The fact that it happened to someone else, means that you could be next. Take action Poeple. Help the police stop these crimes.
